Eggs for Days: 15 Fun Ideas for Decorating Easter Eggs

April 4, 2012 by FaveCrafts

As a kid, I always looked forward to dyeing eggs for Easter, but I would quickly get bored with my standard red, yellow, green, and blue cups of food coloring. I mean, you can only make so many striped eggs before you lose interest. Luckily for my unfulfilled egg decorating aspirations, the days of dyeing Easter eggs with boring old food coloring are long gone!

There are so many clever ideas out there for how to dye Easter eggs that turn this traditional holiday activity into a full-on art form! Forget food coloring; you can get even bolder, brighter colors using Kool-Aid or fruits and vegetables as dyes. Or if you want a less messy (read: drier) option, you can get a fun, festive effect simply by using washi tape or tissue paper to decorate your eggs. You can even imprint images onto eggs, like words, flowers and leaves, or silhouettes, letting the negative space and the natural color of the eggshell shine through.

Here are some of the best tutorials for decorating eggs to make your Easter holiday egg-ceptional (Sorry, had to get at least one egg pun in there!):

If you want to add some detail to your eggs but don’t have the steady hand to draw your own designs, using lace to imprint your dyed eggs is a great option to achieve a beautiful, delicate pattern. Make a bunch of lacy eggs in any color scheme you choose, and set them out as a pretty centerpiece for Sunday dinner! Your guests will definitely be impressed.

We’ve all dyed the shells of eggs before, but have you ever thought to dye the egg itself? These Crackled Egg Jewels have such a stunning visual effect, when really all it takes is cracking your hard-boiled eggs before you dye them! These would make a fun Easter appetizer; you could even use them for deviled eggs!

Definitely one of the coolest techniques I’ve seen is for dyeing Easter eggs with silk ties. No artistry required with this tutorial, and you end up with the most amazing designs! Just buy some old ties with pretty patterns from a thrift store (they must be silk!), wrap them up in the material, and boil them, and you’ll have gorgeous, intricate dyed eggs that would put the Easter bunny to shame.

Making spotted Easter eggs is another easy way to achieve a stunning effect. For this tutorial, all you need is some candle wax and any egg dye, and you can have pretty speckled eggs like these! Or if you want a more uniform look, you can use little round stickers to make polka dot eggs.

If you like the idea of naturally dyed Easter eggs but want to take it one step further, you can use actual bits of nature to give your eggs an earthy, spring look. All you need is your trusty Mod Podge and some flowers or fern leaves from your yard, and you can craft these beautiful nature-inspired Easter eggs. You can also use a similar technique to make decoupage egg ornaments.

So hop to it! Leave the food coloring in the kitchen cabinet this year, and try out one of these innovative ideas for decorating Easter eggs. Just make sure you have some plastic eggs on hand too if you’re planning an Easter egg hunt, because you won’t want to hide these gorgeous creations!

Do you dye eggs every year for Easter? What’s your favorite method for decorating Easter eggs?

10 Frugal and Crafty Ideas for Easter

April 4, 2012 by FaveCrafts

This guest post was written by Kira from Tip Hero.

Easter is right around the corner and I’m once again looking forward to my Easter basket! Yes, I am a grown adult. No, I am not ashamed of my excitement.

Easter, like any other holiday, is a time to cherish loved ones, create memories and enjoy traditions that you look forward to each year. Everyone celebrates differently, of course. But there are certain things that children especially look forward to when the Easter bunny comes to town. And these things don’t have to cost much money to do or prepare.

Here are some cool ideas that we’ve featured on Tip Hero before or that I found on the web. Hopefully they’ll help you create your own frugal fun this year. Enjoy, and Happy Easter!

  • Use dyed hard-boiled eggs for the hunt, then use them to make a plethora of recipes in the days to come!
  • Frugal Baskets and Filling: if you want to keep with this tradition, do it frugally! Think out of the box when it comes to Easter baskets and things with which to fill them.
  • Create new Easter traditions that your family will look forward to every year. These are the unique memories you’ll always look back on and cherish. For example, even as an adult, I look forward to visiting my parents on Easter, receiving a few goodies in the same basket I’ve been getting for years, and enjoying a nice ham dinner with the folks. Here are some wonderful tradition ideas I found over at Stay-at-Home Moms that can help you on your way to creating your own traditions.
  • Invest in plastic eggs and reuse them every year. They’re easy to clean and can be filled with different frugal goodies each year.
  • More Creative Easter Egg Hunts: an Easter egg hunt may very well be something your kids look forward to every year (which is wonderful since it costs practically nothing to put together). If you want to spice up your hunts, here are some cool variations on the popular tradition.

Egg-Specific Tips and Tricks

What’s Easter without eggs? It’s incredible what you can do with a cheap dozen, or couple dozen, eggs. Here are some ideas to run with.

  • Activities and Experiments with Eggs: here are some untraditional ways that you can have fun with eggs, from crafts to wacky experiments.
  • DIY Easter Eggs: here’s an easy method for dyeing your own eggs with food coloring and white vinegar. Here’s a video I found that uses the same method and focuses on teaching kids to DIY:
  • Or Use Natural Dyes: this tip was originally intended for clothing, but you could easily use “natural dyes,” like cherries, red cabbage, and coffee grounds, to dye your Easter eggs. Here’s how you apply these dyeing techniques to eggs courtesy of FrugallyMinded:

Simply place the unboiled eggs you want colored (one singular color) in a pan covered with water and a teaspoon of vinegar. Next, you will be adding the natural dye. […]After adding your natural ingredient for coloring, bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat under the pan and allow 15 minutes of simmering time. Remove the natural coloring ingredients, unless you want a darker color, in which case you can leave the eggs in the colored water with the ingredients overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Easter Egg Crafts: from Easter egg wreaths to magnets to suncatchers, About.com has a plethora of fun Easter eggs crafts meant for decorating your house or giving to others as gifts.
  • How to Boil the Perfect Egg: I’m sure everyone knows how annoying it can be when you’ve messed up boiling a dozen eggs. Not only have you wasted the eggs, but you have to spend money on a whole other dozen (not to mention the time this takes). Try this technique for boiling perfect eggs every time and saving yourself the hassle.

How To: Drain the Yolk from an Easter Egg

March 10, 2010 by FaveCrafts

It’s beginning to feel a lot more like spring lately. Decorative eggs, while closely associated with the Easter holiday, are a wonderful spring craft on their own. There’s just something special about an egg craft when we’re entering a season of rebirth and new beginnings.  Not to mention the fact that easter crafts and easter eggs are often associated with pastel colors. There’s nothing like shedding those dark, earthy winter colors in favor of light and fluffy pastel tones. It all goes together, you see!

Some of my favorite spring time crafts are Easter egg crafts, because the egg is like a blank canvas. Take out your creativity on your next white (or brown) egg. Surprise your guests on St. Patrick’s Day with shamrock-adorned eggs, or glittery green ones. Go all out for Easter brunch with Easter eggs that go above and beyond the typical dyed kinds – decorate with flower petals, fabric or even candy.

First thing’s first. If you want to use egg decorations for longer than a couple of weeks I recommend draining the yolk out of the center. This will help you avoid any rotten-smelling decorations when Easter rolls around.

Materials:

  • Raw egg
  • Safety Pin
  • Bowl

Steps:

  1. With your raw egg in one hand, carefully puncture one end with the safety pin. Be very careful.
  2. Move the pin around so that the hole becomes larger, and hopefully the yolk will break.
  3. Puncture the other end of the egg in the same way.
  4. Hold the egg over the bowl and allow the yolk to drain. This could take a while.
  5. To speed up the process, try blowing into one end (pointing down) to help the yolk move out faster.
  6. When you no longer feel yolk moving around inside, rinse off the outside and let dry.
  7. Repeat this process for as many eggs as you want to decorate.

Egg Decorating Ideas:

  • Dredge the egg shell in glue and cover it in glitter. This works best if the glitter is in a bowl so the egg can be fully submerged. Disco eggs!
  • Go into your backyard and pick up pretty findings from nature – leaves, flower petals, grass. Glue these bits to your eggs for a rustic look to your Easter basket.
  • In the same way that kids get excited about gingerbread houses at Christmas, Easter egg decorating can be just as fun. Glue gum drops and other decorative candies to your egg shells to make them absolutely scrumptious. The only difference with a gingerbread house and an egg is that you can’t eat this one!
  • Use scrap fabric to decorate your egg shells in different patterns. Use patches to make a quilt style egg, or make little clothes that are reminiscent of Humpty Dumpty.
