15 Perfect Spring Felt Projects You’ll Want To Make

April 10, 2017 by FaveCrafts

When you think of craft supplies, you likely envision markers in an assortment of bright colors, glittery sequins, and colorful beads. But what about felt? The unsung hero of craft supplies, felt is sturdy and flexible, and can be folded, sewn, and cut into decorations, accessories, and so much more. Despite its versatility and ease of use, this material is one that you might not be using all that frequently. So why not shake things up a bit? This year, you’ll want to put spring felt projects at the top of your crafting to-do list.

15 Perfect Spring Felt Projects You’ll Want To Make

Hop To It And Make These Easter Felt Crafts

Easter is almost here! Are you ready? If you could use some cute decorations for the holiday (and who couldn’t?!?), then take another look at felt. While you could use paper to make decorations, it’s important to keep in mind that the material has a fleece-like feel to it. There really isn’t a better option for making fuzzy lambs, ducks, and bunnies! Your Easter felt crafts will look and feel soft. In addition, these projects will be an adorable addition to the festivities.

Flower Felt Projects That Will Always Be In Bloom

The calendar might say it’s spring, but you might live in an area where warm weather and blooming flowers won’t return for a while. With that in mind, you can still add flowers to your home when you make flower felt projects. The material can be folded over and over in an assortment of ways without losing its shape, resulting in a design that is both intricate and unique. The softness of the material also gives the flower a more realistic appearance, too. When selecting colors for your flower felt project, consider opting for material in vibrant colors. Need a little help on creating felt flowers? This video tutorial on the Felt Flower Corsage Craft can get you started.

Repurpose Sweaters With DIY Felt Projects

Are you in the midst of spring cleaning and have discovered sweaters that have seen better days? Don’t pitch those sweaters! You can repurpose those sweaters and other knit or crochet items into felt, which can be used for future craft projects or repurposed into comfortable pillows or other home décor items. And how do you make felt, anyway? Whether you want to toss that old sweater in hot water or use another method, our helpful guide on felting can get you started. Reusing a beloved item in a new way is eco-friendly and an inexpensive way to add to your craft supplies. Win-win!

Darling Daisy Easter Ornaments

March 13, 2016 by FaveCrafts

eggs3

Show your Easter spirit with these cute studded clay ornaments! These fun DIY decor pieces are a great way to add a bit of sparkle and shine around your home, and the spring flowers add a cheerful touch! It’s an easy technique of cutting clay using cookie cutters, and then simply pressing in studs before baking.

egg2

You can really make these ornaments any color you’d like, and use them to hang on indoor plants, on a fireplace, doorknobs, or drapes. Get creative with these! I also like to hang these from a light fixture over your Easter dinner table. The bright silver studs add a modern touch to otherwise traditional decorations.

DSC_0097

Step 1: Gather materials. You will need polymer clay (oven bake — I use Sculpey or Fimo), fine glitter, an assortment of mini cookie cutters or clay cutters (find at a food specialty store like Sur la Table or a craft store like Michaels) – I used an egg shape and then mini flower shapes – small studs (these were iron-on studs I found at Michaels), and finally organza ribbon for your top tie.

DSC_0100

Step 2: Make the glitter accents first. Roll out one color of clay until it’s about 1/4″ thick. Press and rub on glitter to the top surface until it’s adhered and sticking, covering the entire surface.

DSC_0101

Step 3: Press down the cookie cutter and cut out your first flower.

DSC_0103

Step 4: To cut more flowers, simply re-roll clay, add more glitter, and cut out.

DSC_0104

I used three flowers per ornament.

DSC_0105

Step 5: Roll out your base clay until it’s about 1/2″ thick. Use your egg cutter to cut your shape.

DSC_0106

Step 6: Line the outer edge with studs, pressing them down to embed them in the clay. Smooth out any imperfections in the clay.

DSC_0108

Step 7: Press your three flowers on top of the egg, firmly but gently to make sure they adhere to the surface.

Step 8: Press studs into the center of the flowers. Poke a hole at top, and bake about 30 minutes at 125 degrees or according to package. When cooled, tie organza ribbon at top to create the ornament!

Perfect for a kid’s craft, anyone can have fun making these home decor DIY pieces!! Mix colors (I’d stick with pastels) for a very Easter-type scheme.

10 DIY Easter Cards To Make Today

In case you missed it, Easter is sneaking up on us early this year and is on March 27th!  Are you like me and you automatically assume Easter falls in April or at least later in March, if so it’s time to get crafting for Easter if you haven’t already started.  When creating DIY paper crafting projects for Easter there are so many cute themes to choose from like bunnies, chicks, eggs, carrots, and flowers.  Unlike the previous holidays of Christmas, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day where there is a set color scheme, with Easter projects you can choose to create your projects in a variety of colors in pretty pastels or brighter hues. Dig into your stash and pull out all of the pretty papers!

So what will you be crafting for Easter this year?  Will you be creating your own paper Easter baskets? If you are hosting Easter brunch this year you could make Easter treat boxes for your guests to take home.  I know I have said it before, but it just isn’t a holiday until you have created a paper garland (or two or three!). If the Easter time crunch this year leaves you with limited crafting time, use that time to create Easter cards for your friends and family.  Below are 10 of my favorite Easter card tutorials that range from super simple (so you can quickly create multiples) to  more advanced designs and techniques. Hop over and check them out!

Easy DIY Wreath with PEEPS

April 13, 2014 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

PEEPs 2014 Easter OfferingsThere’s no denying that PEEPS are an iconic family favorite for Easter. Chances are, if you’ve been in a grocery store around Easter at some point in the last sixty years, you’ve seen (and probably eaten) these delightful marshmallow candies. It’s safe to say that my sweet tooth is just as insatiable as a child’s, so when I was offered the opportunity to express my PEEPS-onality by taking my favorite Easter candy and turning it into a fabulous craft, I jumped at the chance.

In addition to plenty of the standard PEEPS chicks and bunnies, I received a package of the Party Cake flavored PEEPS, a Large Marshmallow Bunny, two chocolate-covered PEEPS, and a bag of the new Peepsters. I may or may not have eaten all of the Peepsters as soon as I got them.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS

I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making a wreath, so I figured creating a PEEPS wreath was the most fun craft I could create. This wreath is easy enough that kids can help you make it, and you’ll be able to finish it relatively quickly. Plus, you can easily remove the PEEPS from the wreath when Easter ends, keep the wreath, and add new PEEPS next year!

Want to make your own DIY wreath with PEEPS? Scroll down for my tutorial!

Easy DIY Wreath with PEEPS

Materials:

  • 12″ styrofoam wreath
  • One skein of yarn (I used Caron Simply Soft. You can use any yarn you like, but different weights and textures may give you a different outcome)
  • Ribbon
  • 2 packages of PEEPS
  • Toothpicks
  • Wooden sign
  • Paint
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions:

1) Tightly tie your yarn onto the wreath in a double knot. Cut the tail of the yarn relatively short so you can easily hide it as you wrap.

2) Steady the styrofoam wreath with one hand (you may want to set the wreath in your lap or on a table for extra balance) and hold your skein of yarn in the other hand. Holding onto the skein of yarn, loop your yarn around the wreath a few (3-5) times. Pull the yarn tight and gently push the loops together so that no white space shows. Repeat this step until the wreath is completely wrapped with yarn. Take care to hide all the white space and do your best not to overlap your strands of yarn as you wrap. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you will want your wreath to look relatively smooth when you’re finished. When your wreath is completely wrapped with yarn, simple tie a knot and tuck the tail end so it doesn’t show.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS3) Insert toothpicks into your wreath. Make sure the toothpicks are arranged in a straight line so your PEEPS will look uniform when you place them.

DIY Wreath with PEEPSYou may need to test a few PEEPS on your toothpicks to make sure they will be close enough together. As you can see in the photos below, my PEEPS were too far apart on my first attempt. You want them to be very snug, like in the photo on the right.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS

4) Cut a small strip of ribbon (enough to wrap around the wreath once and have a little extra) and a long strip of ribbon. The long strip of ribbon will be used to hang your wreath. Place the longer strip of ribbon so that it is centered at the top of your wreath. Place the smaller strip of ribbon around your wreath, covering the longer strip of ribbon. Hot glue the smaller strip of ribbon so that it holds tight. Make to glue the smaller strip of ribbon at the back of the wreath so the ends of your ribbon don’t show in the front of the wreath.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS

5) Adjust the longer strip of ribbon so that you have an equal amount on both sides of the wreath. Fold down a small section of ribbon at each end and hot glue the ends together so that you form a loop. This is how you will hang your wreath.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS6) Paint your wooden sign and allow it to dry. Once dry, add the “Welcome to our Nest” lettering. There’s no right or wrong way to do this- if you have naturally stunning handwriting (unlike me) you can easily freehand the saying onto your wooden sign. If you were not blessed with pretty handwriting, simply use Microsoft Word or a similar program to print your text, cut it out, and use those letters as a stencil. Once your lettering is completely dry, hot glue your wooden sign directly onto your wreath.

DIY Wreath with PEEPS

7) Hang up your hard work and get ready to celebrate Easter!

DIY Wreath with PEEPS

The great thing about this DIY wreath is that you can ultimately customize it any way you want. I like simple home decor, which is why I chose to use the classic yellow PEEPS for this project, but you could certainly use any color combinations you want. For extra charm, use a different PEEP for each member of your family or add a few Easter-themed embellishments.

PEEPS Decoration

When I was finished crafting my DIY wreath, I found a few miniature bird cages in my crafting room that were perfect for some of my leftover PEEPS! These little bird cages would be great for Easter brunches…especially because you can eat them for dessert!

Have you ever crafted with PEEPS?

Decorating Differently: Easter Eggs that Won’t Break

March 19, 2013 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

I’ll be the first to admit that I love decorating Easter eggs. However, I’ll forever attach a certain amount of anxiety when it comes to dyeing designs onto an egg shell. Reason being: I’m clumsy and am always surrounded by rowdy siblings when I try it. Usually there are at least a couple of casualties by way of broken eggs by the end of my decorating experience. Having reached the age where I am master of my own Easter projects, I’ve decided to seek out new Easter decorating ideas which eliminate the broken eggs shells. Try these tutorials for a (hopefully) happier Easter.

Alternative Easter Eggs!

What first made me think of venturing beyond a fragile egg shell was this sturdy Colorful Swirls Marble Eggs project. No, these aren’t actually marble eggs (that would probably enhance my fear of coloring Easter eggs), these are wooden eggs! Try breaking one of those babies! I can’t believe these escaped my notice for so long.

Colorful Swirls Marbled Eggs

Another alternative Easter idea is to use up those plastic eggs. After every Easter egg hunt, they are all around the house. I love plastic eggs because they are indestructible!

Altered Plastic Eggs

But perhaps you’re not keen at giving the little ones (or your immature, adult siblings) wooden or plastic eggs to play around with. No problem. I was thrilled to find that a happy amount of soft Easter eggs existed. These little chicks, for example, are totally felt. Ergo, they won’t hurt if they happen to be thrown at you.

Felt Egg Chicks

Tough Enough for Tradition?

So maybe you’re happy and careful enough to stick with the classic Easter egg shell to decorate. If so, why not consider some new Easter egg decorating tips? I fond these awesome DIY Blingy Easter Eggs from Lovely Indeed. They’re accessorize your traditional Easter egg with a little ice.

Or you could consider going even more modern by using Paper & Stitch’s Metallic Egg Art Easter DIY. I love the metallic addition to a yearly tradition.

Metallic Egg Art Easter DIY

But You STILL Break the Eggs!

If you find yourself with broken shells this year, at least give them some dignity. Maybe these Easter Egg Planters can ease the pain of yet another casualty.

Easter Egg Planters

I hope these alternatives help in your Easter adventures this year. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be hightailing it to the craft store to get some everlasting eggs. Otherwise, maybe this is your year to add some variety to the regular decorating experience. Either way, good luck!

What is your biggest Easter egg decorating disaster?
