10 Frugal and Crafty Ideas for Easter

April 4, 2012 by FaveCrafts

This guest post was written by Kira from Tip Hero.

Easter is right around the corner and I’m once again looking forward to my Easter basket! Yes, I am a grown adult. No, I am not ashamed of my excitement.

Easter, like any other holiday, is a time to cherish loved ones, create memories and enjoy traditions that you look forward to each year. Everyone celebrates differently, of course. But there are certain things that children especially look forward to when the Easter bunny comes to town. And these things don’t have to cost much money to do or prepare.

Here are some cool ideas that we’ve featured on Tip Hero before or that I found on the web. Hopefully they’ll help you create your own frugal fun this year. Enjoy, and Happy Easter!

  • Use dyed hard-boiled eggs for the hunt, then use them to make a plethora of recipes in the days to come!
  • Frugal Baskets and Filling: if you want to keep with this tradition, do it frugally! Think out of the box when it comes to Easter baskets and things with which to fill them.
  • Create new Easter traditions that your family will look forward to every year. These are the unique memories you’ll always look back on and cherish. For example, even as an adult, I look forward to visiting my parents on Easter, receiving a few goodies in the same basket I’ve been getting for years, and enjoying a nice ham dinner with the folks. Here are some wonderful tradition ideas I found over at Stay-at-Home Moms that can help you on your way to creating your own traditions.
  • Invest in plastic eggs and reuse them every year. They’re easy to clean and can be filled with different frugal goodies each year.
  • More Creative Easter Egg Hunts: an Easter egg hunt may very well be something your kids look forward to every year (which is wonderful since it costs practically nothing to put together). If you want to spice up your hunts, here are some cool variations on the popular tradition.

Egg-Specific Tips and Tricks

What’s Easter without eggs? It’s incredible what you can do with a cheap dozen, or couple dozen, eggs. Here are some ideas to run with.

  • Activities and Experiments with Eggs: here are some untraditional ways that you can have fun with eggs, from crafts to wacky experiments.
  • DIY Easter Eggs: here’s an easy method for dyeing your own eggs with food coloring and white vinegar. Here’s a video I found that uses the same method and focuses on teaching kids to DIY:
  • Or Use Natural Dyes: this tip was originally intended for clothing, but you could easily use “natural dyes,” like cherries, red cabbage, and coffee grounds, to dye your Easter eggs. Here’s how you apply these dyeing techniques to eggs courtesy of FrugallyMinded:

Simply place the unboiled eggs you want colored (one singular color) in a pan covered with water and a teaspoon of vinegar. Next, you will be adding the natural dye. […]After adding your natural ingredient for coloring, bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat under the pan and allow 15 minutes of simmering time. Remove the natural coloring ingredients, unless you want a darker color, in which case you can leave the eggs in the colored water with the ingredients overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Easter Egg Crafts: from Easter egg wreaths to magnets to suncatchers, About.com has a plethora of fun Easter eggs crafts meant for decorating your house or giving to others as gifts.
  • How to Boil the Perfect Egg: I’m sure everyone knows how annoying it can be when you’ve messed up boiling a dozen eggs. Not only have you wasted the eggs, but you have to spend money on a whole other dozen (not to mention the time this takes). Try this technique for boiling perfect eggs every time and saving yourself the hassle.

60 Crafts to Hop Into if You’re Eager for Easter

March 20, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts

Even though Easter’s getting closer and closer, to me it seems like it just can’t get here soon enough!  It’s one of my favorite holidays and I can’t wait to celebrate with my whole family this year.

But just because we haven’t flipped the calendar to April yet doesn’t mean you can’t start enjoying some Easter festivities right now.

Since I can’t stop thinking about the holiday, I decided I’d collect a bunch of my favorite Easter crafts and guess what?  Before I knew it I’d gathered 60 projects.  That’s a lot of Easter crafting!  But I love it, so I’m not going to complain 🙂

Anyway, in case you’re like me and are itching to start your Easter celebrations ASAP, here are my top Easter craft picks including egg decorating ideas, basket crafts and some fun decorations made from recycled materials!  Check it out:

I think these Retro Fabric Easter Eggs are so fun and festive, and totally unique!  I’ve never seen anything quite like them.  You can either buy fabric specifically for this project or you can just use up scraps you have around the house!  The best part about fabric eggs is once you make them they’re there to stay. No need to create new egg decorations every year: just pull these out of the attic or basement and your decorating is done!

When I first saw this Floppy Eared Bunny Basket I think I may have let out a little squeal of joy.  It’s just so darn cute!  Of course my first thought was: this has gotta be hard to make.  But I was totally wrong!  Not only is this basket pretty simple to stitch together, it also costs less than 5 bucks to make.  Don’t believe me?  Just check out the tutorial and you’ll see why I’ve fallen in love with this Easter basket idea!

If you think about it, Easter isn’t exactly the most eco-friendly holiday, what with all the candy wrappers, plastic store-bought baskets and whatnot.  But there are actually several ways you can craft for Easter without adding to the unnecessary waster. This little Egg Carton Chick is a perfect example. Instead of just tossing those Styrofoam cartons once you’re done decorating your eggs, use the packaging to create fun Easter decorations for your table. You can also make a bunny version and create a whole gaggle of Easter animals!  Older kids can get in on the fun too since this is a relatively easy craft project.

And it just wouldn’t be Easter if I didn’t share a cute egg cozy idea.  This family of chick egg cozies has to be one of the most adorable ways you can possibly protect your eggs. I can’t get over how each little chick has a different style hat. This Easter crochet pattern is just so ridiculously cute.

So are you even more pumped for Easter now?  So am I!

Spring into Creativity with New Easter Craft eBook

February 24, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts

Just the other day I saw two surefire signs of the coming of spring.  No, it wasn’t flower buds popping out of the ground and it wasn’t the snow slowly starting to disappear.  No, my first glimpses of Spring 2012 were in the form of fluffy, yellow marshmallow chicks on the shelf of my local grocery store and the first airing of that iconic Cadbury commercial where the different animals are all auditioning to be the Easter bunny.  You know the one I’m talking about:

It may seem early to be talking about chicks and bunnies, but we’re almost in March and really before you know it Easter will be here!  That’s why the folks at AllFreeHolidayCrafts decided to help you get a head start on your Easter preparations.  They’ve just released their brand new eBook, 7 Cute Easter Craft Projects, which has some really great ideas for egg decorating, basket making and general holiday home decor.  Check it out for yourself; you can download a free PDF copy right here!

Download your free copy of How to Make Easter Crafts: 7 Cute Easter Craft Projects today!

I’m personally so excited about this eBook because this is the first spring where I’m feeling especially crafty.  I can’t wait to try my hand at this Grass is Greener Wreath (featured on page 23 of the eBook).  I first noticed it over on Pinterest where a ton of my friends were obsessing over how cute it is and vowing to make it this spring.

I think there are a couple reasons why this wreath has been super popular. First, it’s ridiculously easy to make. See that plush green “grass”?  It’s really just some Fun Fur yarn!  Clever, huh?  Also this wreath is very practical; it’s a decoration that you can leave up all season long.  A lot of Easter wreaths feature eggs and bunnies and the like, but the simplicity and seasonal nature of this one makes it fitting for March through September!

So that’s the project that I’m most looking forward to making from this Easter craft eBook, but there are a bunch of other really great ideas.  Anyone who is even thinking about making homemade decorations for Easter this year should check out this craft collection. You can download the eBook for free with one simple click, right here on the AllFreeHolidayCrafts website!

To recap…

In the 7 Cute Easter Crafts eBook you’ll find:

  • The adorable “Grass is Greener” wreath pictured above
  • Easy egg crafts
  • Easter basket tutorials
  • Cute DIY Easter decorations

And so much more!  So what are you waiting for? Spring forward and get started on one of these 7 cute Easter craft projects today!

I’m curious:  What’s your favorite craft project to make for Easter?

April 19, 2011 by FaveCrafts

This guest post was written by Corinne Reidy for Webdesignschoolsguide.com.

Next to egg hunts and candy, coloring Easter eggs is a favorite Easter tradition for children and adults alike. Traditional Easter eggs are dyed in a rainbow of food coloring or hand painted, but the fun doesn’t end there. Easter eggs can also be sprinkled with glitter, made out of paper and bedazzled with jewels. No matter the design or type of egg, kids just love to be artsy and make messes with you by their side. Here are 30 easy and adorable Easter egg designs your kids will love:

Dip and Dye

These adorable designs and tutorials are a fun twist on the traditional dye job.

  1. Cracked Eggshell and Chick Design: Electrical tape and vinyl stencils are used to make the adorable chirping chicks and cracked eggshells.
  2. Eraser Decorating: Pencil erasers are the perfect tool for making polka dotted Easter eggs and other designs.
  3. Decal Dyed Eggs: Small stickers make for easy and adorable Easter egg decals your kids will love.
  4. Spring Menagerie Eggs: Create a menagerie of cute creatures and carrots with this lovely tutorial.
  5. Candy Dots: Kids can enjoy candy in more ways than one this Easter by gluing bite-sized pieces onto dyed eggs! This tutorial also shows you how to make a homemade frosting paste.
  6. Crayon Sketch Designs: It’s like magic to watch your white crayon designs pop after the dye dries in this activity.
  7. Natural Dyes: Dip your Easter eggs in these natural dyes made from blueberries, grape juice, curry powder, black tea and other household products.
  8. Rubber Band Eggs: Tightly wrapped rubber bands give eggs a cool tie-dye and stripy look.
  9. Egg Bunny: Your kids will be so hoppy to make this adorable Easter bunny egg from scratch.
  10. Marbled Eggs : A mixture of oil, vinegar and food coloring make these marbled eggs so beautiful and swirly.

Dye Alternatives

Try these designs for a no fuss, no muss alternative to dye.

  1. Melted Crayon Eggs: With Mom or Dad’s help, these just-boiled eggs will soften crayon wax to create colorful and swirly masterpieces.
  2. Decoupage Designs: If you feel like skipping the dye and paint this Easter, try these adorable decoupage eggs that use Easter-themed illustrations instead.
  3. Jeweled Eggs: These Faberge-inspired eggs are oh-so fun and fancy.
  4. Handpainted Eggs: If your child prefers solid colored eggs, check out this tutorial for beautiful matte and satin-finished Easter eggs.
  5. Tissue Paper Designs: Skip the mess of dyes and paints with these awesome tissue paper designs.
  6. Silk Eggs: Want to find a crafty use for your old silk scarves or ties? This awesome tutorial shows you how to turn a neat print into an elegant Easter egg design.
  7. Paraffin Easter Eggs: These paraffin Easter eggs are a nice alternative to dye and can even serve as a science lesson!
  8. Sponge Painted Eggs: Put that old dish sponge to good use as a textured Easter egg decorating tool.
  9. Bubble Packaging Design: The same bubble wrap you use to protect your fragile Easter eggs will work as a painting tool to create a fun, bubbly design.
  10. Thumbprint Designs: This design deserves two thumbs up for its simplicity and utter cuteness.

Artificial Eggs

Go chickenless with these artificial eggs that are just as crafty and cool.

  1. Eggimals: Make use of candy-free plastic eggs by turning them into sweet eggimals, err, animals.

  4. Swarovski Easter Eggs: These bedazzling plastic eggs are the perfect mother-daughter Easter project.
  5. Permanent Marker Eggs: Bold permanent markers really make these faux Easter eggs pop.
  6. Wooden Easter Eggs: This craft expert shows you how to decorate small wooden eggs to look like beautiful robin eggs.
  7. Paper Mache Eggs: Your kids will have a ball making and breaking open these jumbo paper mache eggs.
  8. Flower Pot Eggs: These adorable flower pot Easter eggs will keep blooming year after year.

  10. Paper Easter Eggs: These paper Easter eggs are a fun alternative to real eggs and less messy than paint and dye.

Egg-celent Ideas for your Eggs this Easter

April 12, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Please egg-cuse my awful puns, but I couldn’t resist. They just come rolling out of me this time of year.

If you’re like me, coloring eggs is your favorite part of Easter. I remember when I was little I would force both of my parents to spend time with me in the kitchen while I drew on eggs with that weird white crayon and then colored them in the corresponding colored cups. Occasionally, I would would watch as my mom shrink wrapped those clear plastic designs around the eggs, less intrigued with the design and more intrigued with the fact that plastic shrinks in heat (still intrigued I should say).

My dad, old fashioned as he was, would always color eggs in onion skins and they would come out to be a rich brown color. At the time, I always thought that mine looked prettier. Now that I’ve grown up, a bit, I miss those dark brown eggs every Easter, but at the same time I want something Spring-y and colorful.

Leave it up to FaveCrafts to figure out the answer for me.

In the new Easter Eggs: Easter Egg Designs, Tips for Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs, Egg Recipes there are several adorable ideas for coloring eggs, including a couple ideas for dying eggs naturally. I was super excited when I found it.

This year, instead of having the same old brown eggs, I can add beautiful, delicate flower details to them. I love how these eggs turned out in the picture. Who knew you could pull off such professional looking eggs with onion skins and flowers? Mine, of course, will probably not turn out to be as well done, but I’m sure they will be pretty anyway.

Well, if they come out looking horribly, I can still make pretty solid colored eggs using blueberries and beets from the tutorial on How to Naturally Dye Easter Eggs. I ask myself, why have I never thought of this before? I guess when you learn something at a young age one way, thinking outside of the box becomes nearly impossible. Anyway, I’m really happy I found these projects because I can dye my Easter eggs the old fashioned way my dad used to and still get all the fun colors I love.

Oh, another wonderful point about the free Easter Eggs ebook: included are recipes for delicious meals to make with your hard boiled eggs after Easter is over. No need to let all your hard work go to waste. Thanks RecipeLion!

How do you normally color your eggs?

My Top 5 Stashbusters

March 31, 2011 by AllFreeKnitting

The bottom drawer of my yarn organizer, like the neglected shelf space at the back of the refrigerator, is reserved for leftovers.  It’s a multicolored cubic foot of tangled scraps of yarn. If I’m lucky, the socks I made last spring will wear through, and I can go straight to that drawer and find the exact same yarn for darning, justifying my hoard of leftovers. But most of the time, the tangle sits untouched. Even if I find a few amigurumi or knitted flower patterns to use up some of the scraps, these well-meaning knitting project plans inevitably give way to more exciting endeavors requiring miles upon miles of pristine yarn.

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself to work on stashbusters, this post is for you! My first bit of advice is to stop buying yarn until you really need it. You have a list of projects to do, you have an entire spare bedroom full of yarn, and it’s time to get knitting. This strategy will seem simple as you busily click your needles along for the first week or two and start burning through that stash. But when you get within a mile of your LYS, the closest Hobby Lobby, or eventually even the local Wal-Mart, you will begin to experience yarn-shopping withdrawal.  I’ve been doing this challenge since October, and I often find myself standing in front of yarn displays and dreaming of new projects, with no recollection of how I got to the store.

This brings us to my second piece of advice: find some stashbusting projects you are truly enthusiastic about. Don’t even try to knit knick-knacks you’ll never use. Find projects that make you smile or patterns that seem functional, and your stashbusting projects will become just as exciting as the lacy, cabled masterpiece you spent the past 3 months on. As an added bonus, you can often complete stashbusters in just an evening. They’ll provide a welcome break from time consuming or repetitive larger patterns. Here are just a few of the easy knitting projects I’m planning for leftover yarn:

1. Beaded Friendship Bracelet

Beaded Friendship Bracelet

This fashionable cuff can be made with different yarns or beads to vary the style and match with different outfits.

2. Easter Egg Ornaments

Easter Egg Ornaments

The stripes and polka dots make these especially useful for very small scraps of yarn. Hang them on an arrangement of pussy willow branches for a cheery Easter decoration.

3. Baby Mitts

Baby Mitts

These mitts are a fast and easy knitting project because you don’t have to deal with tricky thumbs. The adorable striping also lends itself to creative stashbusting.

4. Dragonfly Washcloth

Washcloths are a great way to use leftover yarn, especially if you have scraps of cotton. Plus, you’re guaranteed to use something as practical as a washcloth!

5. Boxes Full O’ Seeds Neck Warmer

Boxes Full O Seeds Neck Warmer

This knitting project is a little bigger than the others, so you might want to use a ball of nicer yarn leftover from a bigger project. The buttons let you fasten this neck warmer snugly without adding extra fabric.

Now it’s your turn! I’m challenging you to pull out your drawer of yarn scraps and get creative. What are your favorite patterns for stashbusting?
