Top 5 Crafts of May

June 14, 2011 by FaveCrafts

It’s about that time again, eh? Let’s take a little peek at what was most popular on FaveCrafts during the month of May, including some new projects you might not have seen before. But first, refresh your memory by catching up on the Top 5 Crafts of April, and don’t miss the FaveCrafts Most Popular Craft Projects: May 2011, where you’ll also see what was HOT on AllFreeCrochet, AllFreeKnitting, and AllFreeSewing last month!

5. The Coziest Crochet Baby Blanket Ever
cozy baby blanket Top 5 Crafts of April

Do you recognize this one? This cozy crocheted baby blanket is a repeat offender–it made the cut last month as well! It slid from 3rd to 5th most popular project this month, but that’s still an amazing feat. If you haven’t checked out this pattern yet, what the heck are you waiting for? It is super soft and cozy, perfect for a baby shower gift…

4. 14 Water Bottle Crafts

Who doesn’t have a bunch of empty water bottles lying around? Relieve your guilt by recycling them into fun craft projects–we’ve got a whopping 14 in this collection! If you use reusable water bottles, you can still try these fun ideas by using other kinds of plastic bottles and bottle caps. You won’t believe some of the stuff you can make with bottles!

3. 20 Minute Ruffle Dress

We added a bunch of new sewing patterns for girls’ dresses recently, and this was one of my favorites. It was one of your favorites in May too! I know what you’re thinking–this doesn’t look like it only takes 20 minutes to make. But the secret is in the pre-ruffled fabric. All that’s left for you to do is cut and sew.

2. Dollar Store Petal Skirt

I’m so glad that this project made it into the top 5 last month. Why? Because it’s mine! You may recall that I showed you how to make it during National Craft Month in March. The popularity of the petal skirt, which is both easy and thrifty, really shot up when I featured it in a newsletter in May. This skirt may not be for everyone, but it sure is fun to look at (and you really won’t believe how cheap it was!).

1. 11 Free Birdhouse Designs

If there’s one thing I’ve learned this spring, it’s that you guys LOVE birdhouses! This collection features 11 of our favorites, some of which can be made with plastic bottles (your other favorite)!

Among the runners up were the Net Stitch Camisole, the White and Cream Ruffle Dress, and the Crochet Angel Shawl. Which was your favorite? Don’t forget to check out the full collection of May’s heavy hitters in FaveCrafts Most Popular Craft Projects: May 2011!

Top 5 Crafts of April

May 10, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Can you believe that May is already a week old? Well, you know what that means–it’s time to count down the top 5 craft projects from last month. These are the projects that FaveCrafts readers loved the most in April. But before I show them to you, make sure you catch up on last month’s recap, the Top 5 Crafts of March! And of course, check out what was popular on our sister sites last month as well in FaveCrafts Most Popular Craft Projects: April 2011.

5. Cleavage Be Gone

What in the world is the “Cleavage Be Gone?” It’s exactly what it sounds like–you wear it under your shirt and hook it around your bra to cover up for modesty’s sake. A lot of FaveCrafts readers complain that they can’t find modest shirts anymore, so the Cleavage Be Gone is a God send to them! We debuted this easy sewing pattern way back in October of 2010, but you guys loved it just as much in April! By the way, have you seen our Cold Weather Knit Dickie?

4. Butterfly Crochet Bag

It seems that FaveCrafts readers love a good butterfly motif. Is this true? I definitely love butterfly crafts; they’re so pretty and they just scream “SPRING!” You guys loved this cute little bag in our spring crochet issue from 4/14. How many of you tried the pattern? By the way, have you seen our Crochet Flower Clutch?

3. The Coziest Crochet Baby Blanket Ever

With a name like that, this baby blanket pattern has a lot to live up to! But it really does look extremely cozy and soft. Next time I get invited to a baby shower, I’m going straight to this pattern for the gift. We sent out a newsletter issue full of vintage baby blankets on 4/22, and this pattern was your favorite one! And I can see why. By the way, have you seen our Baby Love eBook from Red Heart Yarns?

2. Dollar Store Easter Bunny

I’m sad that Easter is over because it means I won’t be seeing adorable crafts like this anymore. But there are plenty of other dollar store crafts to hold me over! If there’s anything I love more than Easter crafts it’s dollar store crafts. It looks like FaveCrafts readers like them too! We featured this little guy in our Easter issue on 4/5, and he was a big hit! By the way, have you seen our Dollar Store Petal Skirt (I made it myself!)?

And now for my favorite part, the most popular project from April!

1. Unique Tampon Angel

This project has been…how shall I put this?…controversial, to say the least. Check out some of our readers’ comments (and add your own!). Perhaps this angel is more infamous than popular. But nevertheless, it certainly piqued your interest! We featured it in our “Wacky, Weird, and Wonderful Crafts” issue (the same issue as the Cleavage Be Gone!) and you guys went nuts over it. Would you ever hang an old tampon on your Christmas tree? I know I would! I think it’s kitschy. Am I just gross? By the way, have you seen our Delicate Crochet Angel Doll?

If you’re sad that you missed the rest of our top projects and our wildly popular newsletters, head over here to subscribe. It’s free! And don’t miss our Most Popular Crafts from every month.

Topiari Sculptures by Everyday Crafting Materials

April 22, 2011 by TheCrochetCrowd

Topiari Creativ Festival Sculpture, designed by Daniel Zondervan with some assistance by Michael Sellick for crochet materials used.

Inspired by Creativ Festival, Daniel Zondervan, marketing director of The Crochet Crowd was challenged to create an eye pleasing arrangment that everyday consumers would love to see.

The sculpture sits nearly 8 feet tall into the air when wearing the big blue bird feather head peice that is mounted to the top. Constructed by Chicken Wire, and layered 4 times with paper mache, the sculpture is strong enough to support it’s own weight. White lights were wired up before the paper mache application to ensure they would not fall out at any point. Also, he wired in extra wires that randomly poked out of the paper mache to give himself anchor peices for where all of the goodies would attach.
The yarn donated for this project were compliments of Bernat and Red Heart. Random stores were sought out to find little trinkets and goodies to decorate. Many items were picked up at a dollar store. The major expenses to this $130 project were The Hot Lips Paint, Assorted feathers from different species of birds, Chicken Wire, and more. The sculpture has a lot to see including birds, butterflies, dried flowers, easter basket fibres, styrofoam eggs, bamboo, glittered twigs, crochet flowers, bead work, wire wrapped goodies, bunnies, and much more.
This sculpture wasa  real hit for Creativ as many people stopped with their cameras to take pictures of this masterpeice. The behind the scenes look at this sculpture can be found at The Crochet Crowd’s Facebook Fan Page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Crochet-Crowd/116482731742088 This project took about 2 months to complete as ideas were still sparking off creativity throughout the project.
