11 Beginner Tie Dye Tutorials and Tips

August 1, 2016 by FaveCrafts

Learning how to tie dye is one of those useful life skills that often go underappreciated. I remember tie dying shirts at birthday parties when I was little and having a blast, so it’s my opinion that the world would be a little more cheerful if we all learned to tie dye. For one thing, there are so many tie dye tutorials out there, you can’t possibly run out of ideas. And not only can you have a lot of fun with it, it’s a great way to help your kids or grandkids create their own memories as they make amazing projects. Check out the lists below for tutorials and tips for making some truly wonderful tie dye projects today!

11 Beginner Tie Dye Tutorials and Tips

Tips to Get Started

  1. 100% cotton material is your best bet. For clothes, a basic 100% cotton T-shirt creates a perfect canvas that will hold dye the best.
  2. Experiment with different styles. From striped patterns to spirals, there are tons of tie dye patterns out there to choose from. If you do your research (by checking out the tutorials below!) you can choose the best pattern for what you want to accomplish. Don’t be afraid to branch out and choose something a little different!
  3. Combine colors for amazing effects. Pick colors that will blend well together, because the dyes that are next to each other will form new colors that you may not want! For instance, rather than sticking that pink right next to the green, consider placing it near your orange or yellow spots.
  4. Rinse under cold water before throwing your project in the washing machine! That will prevent dye from getting over your other garments. You will also need to wash the shirt (or whatever your project is!) by itself the first few times in the washing machine, again with cold water.

Tie Dye Tutorials to Try

    • This technique is a tried-and-true tie dye method that yields beautiful results. The bullseye is like the poster child of the tie dye world: you’ll definitely want to try this tie dye tutorial out!Bullseye Tie Dye Technique

  3.  Swirl Tie Dye Technique

    • I have a confession to make – I know you shouldn’t play favorites, but this is my favorite one! I remember using this technique when I was little to create an awesome T-shirt. This is a great one to choose if you’re having a hard time deciding where to start.Swirl Tie Dye Technique
  4.  Sunburst Tie Dye Technique

    • Pictured is just one of the many ways you can use this cheerful tie dye pattern to create your own masterpiece. This one is extra fun, because you can make many small sunbursts or one giant one for a pop of color!Sunburst Tie Dye Technique

52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

May 31, 2016 by FaveCrafts

Summertime means festivals, and festivals mean a variety of unique sights and sounds. People often show off their personal style during Coachella and other music and arts festivals. This summer, many folks are choosing to go boho with their wardrobe.

52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season

What is boho, you ask? When I think of the word “boho,” I think of the way a stream moves: free-flowing and breezy. Bohemian clothing often includes loose-fitting tops and lightweight skirts made from organic fabrics to be mindful of the environment. It also tends to include a lot of jewelry and embellishments.

Not surprisingly, the Bohemian style originated in France. Pier 1 Imports describes it this way: “Popularized in Revolutionary France, the Bohemians expressed their creativity in the way they lived and looked. Discover a world of damask, paisley, and other patterns. Dive into a field of color and uncover global accents that express your one-of-a-kind style.”

In America, the Bohemian style went big during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Fashion icons like Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, and Cher popularized the hippie, free-spirited look with their flowing peasant tops and layers of beaded accessories.

Taking a cue from these icons, I’ve compiled a list of 52 Boho Crafts for Festival Season that would be perfect for you to make and wear this summer. Check it out below and get started crafting!

Paint and Plant: Earth Day 2016 with the FaveCrafts Team

May 3, 2016 by FaveCrafts

earth day fcb

The first Earth Day in 1970 was coordinated to organize a nationwide teach-in to not only celebrate but empathize the need to protect our green spaces. Now, forty years later, people across the USA still celebrate this important day by taking time out of their day to plant trees, teach special lessons on environmental conservation, and more. Never one to skip a great opportunity to get creative, we here at Prime Publishing LLC (the team behind FaveCrafts.com!) decided to do our part by combining planting pretty flowers and crafting!

This year, we painted adorable itty bitty terra cotta pots in beautiful colors before planting charming petunias in our brand new creations. The pretty and purple Wave Pansies and other green cuties we picked up at Home Depot looked lovely sprouting out of our painted masterpieces. One editor, Jesse Carpendar said of the experience:

Decorating flower pots was a relaxing way to welcome spring into our office. It was nice to see everyone’s creative side emerge. It’s been even nicer to have cute pink flowers greeting me at my desk every morning since.

Check out our video below!

As you can see, we have an office of crafty editors with green thumbs. The petunias and pots are still blooming beautifully on plenty of desks. Spring is here and we reveled in the chance to bring some spring indoors.

It was wonderful to bring some of the beauty of the outdoors inside. The purple Wave pansies were gorgeous and immediately brightened up my desk!

DIY Yarn Pom Pom Basket

All you really need for this project is a basket, some wire, and yarn! Feel free to customize each pom pom to be a different color. 10 Cutest Monogram Ideas

August 26, 2015 by FaveCrafts

Newly Wed PlaqueIf you’re in love with the Lily Pulitzer, but don’t want to spend the money on cute monogrammed stuff, then you need to try these DIY monogram ideas. You can cheaply decorate your home with hand-painted monograms in your initials. The great thing about monogrammed items is that there is no question of who’s stuff it is. I live in a house with two other sisters and my mom. My sisters and I are about the same size, so my clothes mysteriously go missing from time to time. However, I noticed that the ones with my initials on it or my sorority letters are the items that get left behind. That’s why monogrammed stuff is becoming essential: a personalized touch makes greedy hands go away.

10 Cutest Monogram Ideas

Monogrammed House NumberI’ve been rooming with the same girl since my freshman year, so all ideas of “personal space” have gone out the door. Though starting out, we kept everything separate. We were the lucky ones who didn’t end up hating each other and didn’t have too many problems. Others, however, didn’t have as much luck. Labeling everything and getting stuff organized has become such a huge trend. Especially the DIY storage bins that can be used for literally everything. Monogramming initials has become such a cute way to personalize clothing and crafts.

Here are some direct quotes from our editors on their thoughts about monogramming:

“I love monogramming because it allows me to put a special touch on even the most generic accessories.”Monogrammed Stool

“Monogramming is a way to personalize gifts for friends and family in a way that regular store-bought, generic gifts don’t.”

“My name is incredible and I want to show it off, but really though it’s a personal touch on any accessory. Monogram necklaces are a great gift, tote bags, and travel.”

I can’t wait to get started on the Newly Wed Plaque. My sister just got married, and I want to use a variation of it. The fun part about my new brother-in-law and my sister? They have the same initials. Both start with “L,” middle “E,” and obviously the same last name. The best thing about these easy crafts are that they can be applied and followed. You can put them on practically anything. Take the technique of the Paper and Monogrammed Stool and use it for a DIY kid’s table or a wooden plaque. The idea of monogramming is simple and not too different, but the techniques of applying and creating it vary from crafter to crafter.
