DIY Dorm Room Decorating Ideas

July 27, 2015 by FaveCrafts

I am one of the lucky few who get to say that I have lived on campus, in a dorm room, with the same girl for all of college. Anyone will tell you not to live with your best friend starting out; I’m just lucky enough that my roommate turned into my best friend. Out of all the crazy stories these past three years, I never regretted a single thing. The only thing I wished could have happened was a decorated dorm room. I got the basics that every college kid needed, overstuffed the car, and went my merry way to school. None of it matched. Even now, as I start my last semester, I still have the same black-and-blue bedspread, gray sheets, and a desk organizer. Besides all the little office stuff, there are no decorations that I take with me. The main reason, I buy my own supplies for college, so I didn’t want to spend money on things I didn’t need when I could have been saving it for things I did need.

What I didn’t realize is that I could have utilized my sewing machine or crafted some incredible dorm room decor so that I didn’t feel like I was staying at a hotel for nine months at a time. You have to make your new dorm room a home, otherwise you will feel so out of place (take it from this wise old senior). But if you or your parents are trying not to break the bank, you need to try these super cute dorm room decorating ideas for girls. They are mostly sewing patterns, but you can get some inspiration for sprucing up your organizers and office space.

Dorm Room Ideas

You’ll appreciate having a comfortable room to come back to after a long day of classes (or a long night of socializing). It will make you a lot less homesick when you personalize your dorm room and have cute homemade pillows to cuddle up to. Homemade picture frames will hold your memories for a lifetime. These easy sewing patterns for bedspreads and ruffled pillows are going to become your favorite patterns to make and will decorate your home-room and your dorm-room with double sets of them. By making your dorm decor yourself, you’re going to love how your unique personality shine through and how much money you will be saving.

DIY Pet Toys

June 25, 2015 by FaveCrafts

I have two puppies. Well, technically not puppies. One is a 13-year old yellow Labrador, Lilo, and the other is a 7-year old half black lab, possibly border collie mix, Maggie. So they’re old, but Lilo still thinks she is the little pup we got so many years ago, even though her body can’t keep up anymore. However, no matter how old she gets, she still loves toys. She honestly makes a toy out of anything. We trained her to get the paper from the driveway, to pick out a pair of socks for my dad (as long as the drawer is open), and any loner socks she gets to play with. My dogs are able to make play time out of any household items. So making homemade pet toys has got to be cheaper than buying name brand items, right?

That’s why you need to ditch the store-bought toys and make your own with these DIY dog toys. Just a little bit of fabric or an old water bottle can make the different between a dud or a deal.

Now I may not have too much experience in the cat area, or any experience at all, but I feel like I have a good handle on the DIY cat toys and what is considered “cool” in the cat-world (thanks Youtube). Anything small or dangley that attracts attention for short burst of time. And anything they can scratch. Lordy, there’s a lot of scratching.

Crunchy ToyI love this crunchy dog toy. It is just a water bottle sewn into a piece of fabric and stuffed. It’s durable enough to play fetch, while soft enough for your puppy to snuggle at night. If you’re not much of a sewist, you can also put a water bottle in a sock and tie off the end. No matter if you’re upcycling fabric scraps or upcycling socks, your fur-baby will love this homemade toy.

DIY Cat Scratching PostFor cats, from what I have gathered, scratching posts are a ridiculous amount of money, but you don’t want to sacrifice your furniture for your cat’s habits. That’s why this homemade cat scratching post is a great way to recycle your cardboard boxes and save your money. I love the fact that you can make it however high or wide you want it so you can accommodate your living space.

Whether you have a canine-companion or a feline-friend, these homemade pet toys are going to be your favorite because of how easy it is to make cheap pet toys.

18 Ways to Use Embroidery Hoops

July 11, 2014 by FaveCrafts

One of my earliest crafting memories is learning how to use the embroidery hoop.  My great-grandmother, who was a master sewist and knitter, had a large assortment of embroidery hoops that she gave to my mom after she moved to Florida.  My mom spent several days teaching me how to use the embroidery hoop and how to sew and embroider patterns onto fabric.  I had remembered watching my great-grandmother embroider and I loved the poetry of her movement…how she effortlessly created all kinds of embroidered napkins, pillowcases, and handkerchiefs by simply pulling a needle and thread through the fabric.

When I got old enough, I created my very first embroidered pattern, which was a haphazard dedication to Harry Potter.  When I stumbled upon this project a few years ago, it brought me to tears and I instantly hung it above my bookshelf, where it sits today.

As I sat looking at one of the first things I ever remember making, I wondered what else I could do with my great-grandma’s embroidery hoops.  I have a variety of hoops in different sizes…so I did some exploring and gathered up a few of my favorite embroidery hoop projects for you to enjoy!  Whether you use them to embroider or decorate your home, these plastic and wooden hoops can do wonders for your home decor.  Projects like the Jolly JOY Ornaments make for a quick and easy Christmas decoration…and the Embroidery Hoop Bulletin Board is a great way to keep your life organized.

No matter how you use them, these fun embroidery hoop ideas are sure to give you a reason to dig those old hoops out of your craft stash!  Enjoy!
