Halloween Crafts for Kids: Pom Pom Spookers

September 26, 2013 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

Halloween Crafts for Kids: Pom Pom Spookers

This post brought to you by Lady Lucas

halloween-pom-pom-critters
I make these adorable little critters every year around Halloween and they are loved by children of any age. You can use pom poms you make yourself with yarn, or make use of fluffy, store-bought ones! Place around the home as Halloween decor, or use to decorate packages!

Materials:

  • Assorted large pom poms
  • Assorted cardstock
  • Small googly eyes
  • Black embroidery floss
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Strong craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Circle punch 1 ½”

Instructions:

1. Before starting your critters, punch out some colorful circles with a paper punch, or cut out your own using a stencil or even free hand. These will be the ‘base’ for each critter, and the size should be a little larger than a quarter {around 1 ½”}.

2. To make an owl critter, cut out three tiny triangles, two circles, and two pointy feet from yellow cardstock. Glue all pieces onto a dark-colored pom pom and add tiny googly eyes as a final touch. Glue your owl on a circle base.

halloween-pom2

3. To make a cute witch, cut a witch hat out of black cardstock. Cut two tiny circles out of white cardstock, and a broom out of tan colored cardstock. Glue all pieces on a black pom pom and add googly eyes inside the white circles. If you have some glitter glue, add a line to the witch’s hat. Glue your witch on a circle base.

4. To make the cute jack-o-lantern critters, you can let your imagination go wild! Knotted black embroidery floss makes cute beady eyes… or use googly eyes instead. Cut paper can make a funny smile or nose. A strand of black embroidery floss offers a simple smile.

5. After gluing all your face components together, add a little hat to your critter by folding a half circle and gluing it on the seam. Glue a small piece of pipe cleaner at the bottom for the fringe of the hat. These tiny hats are tricky for little hands, so an adult’s help might be needed! Glue your jack-o-lanterns on colorful circle bases.

How to: Make a Flo from the Progressive Commercials Costume

October 20, 2010 by FaveCrafts

This year I’m going as Flo from the Progressive commercials for Halloween. No, I am not affiliated with the insurance company, and no, I don’t really “<3 insurance.” But it’s always a good idea to be something relevant for Halloween. This year’s relevant costumes include the cast of Jersey Shore, Antoine Dodson (the “hide yo kids, hide yo wife” guy of YouTube infamy), the ever popular Lady Gaga, and the characters from Mad Men.

Flo, the cheery, overly helpful retro-esque insurance saleswoman from the Progressive commercials seemed like the perfect costume because she’s easily recognizable, culturally relevant, a little unexpected, and easy to DIY. Here’s how I did it:

  1. The clothes: Wear a pair of white pants and a white polo shirt. I’m not sure what shoes she wears or if it even matters, so have fun with it!
  2. The hair and makeup: Invest in a Bump-It. I am only a little ashamed to admit that I already have a set in my beauty arsenal, and I didn’t even buy them for Halloween, sadly. Also slip a stretchy headband over your bangs, curl the ends of your hair out, slick on some bright red lipstick, and give yourself winged eyeliner.
  3. The apron: Buy a plain white apron from the store. I got mine at Hobby Lobby, but you’re bound to find one anywhere aprons are sold. Or you can make your own. Print out the Progressive logo, use an X-acto knife to cut out the letters, and use what’s left as a stencil. Fill in the letters with a blue marker or paint, right across the front of your apron.
  4. The pins: Flo wears two pins–one that says “I <3 insurance,” and one that says “Flo.” You can buy these online, but this article is about how to make your costume, not how to buy it. I looked up the pins on a website that was selling them, printed out the pictures, and cut them out myself. You can fill in the colors with markers if you want, or just print in color. Attach the cut-outs to cardboard or card stock, and attach that to a safety pin. Pin your badges to the apron, and you’re set. Make sure you spend Halloween night yelling “Discount!”

What are you going to be for Halloween?

How to Carve a Pumpkin

October 13, 2010 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts

We have 18 days until Halloween is finally here! Are you excited like I am? When I drive around I’ve been seeing more and more Halloween decorations that just make me so happy. I’ve even been scared of a few of them. I saw this really large blow-up spider on someone’s lawn that I wasn’t prepared for. There was also this really creepy face on someone’s front door, it had green eyes and was lit up in the background. People are getting very creative this year.

I still haven’t gone to a pumpkin patch this season but I’m hoping to this weekend. Now that I think about it I really haven’t seen many carved pumpkins either. I think it’s still a bit too soon to have your pumpkins out, only because they go bad so quickly. It is really fun to carve pumpkins though, especially when you have other people to do it with you.

There are many ways to carve a pumpkin, but I’m not very creative or artistic so I do it the cheater’s way. I usually buy one of those sketch books so I can just poke small holes in the pumpkin outlining the design. Once the holes are there you can just use a knife to cut it out. Of course you have to cut the top off first and gut it. The ewy gooey inside is so weird but you can use the seeds for baking purposes. Of course before you start carving your pumpkin or tracing designs you have to pick out the perfect pumpkin, either from the store or a pumpkin patch. Patches are more fun.

Aside from tracing a pattern and taking the easy way out, you can draw up your own design. The original pumpkin face with two triangle eyes and nose is always an easy one. If you’re very artistic then you can come up with a fabulous design. Some ideas I can share with you are the Cubs logo, the Hawks logo, very popular right now, your dog, or even a spooky Halloween scene with a moon and trees, those are very neat. Cats and witches are always fun to carve too. Have you ever carved a spider? It’s only difficult to do because the legs have to be so thinly cut.

You can also decorate your pumpkin without carving it. You can draw faces on it, use craft supplies like glitter and glue or turn it into something amazing. Some of my favorite decorative pumpkins are:

  1. Boo Pumpkin
  2. Bug Pumpkin
  3. Frankenstein Pumpkin
  4. Mod Pumpkin
  5. Owl Pumpkin

What’s your favorite design to carve?
