There’s no better way to show your love and appreciation for someone than to make them something by hand.  Whether it’s baking cookies or knitting a scarf, a handmade gift can go a long way.

In her sweet book, Gifted: Lovely Little Things to Knit and Crochet, author Mags Kandis provides tons of ideas for handmade gifts for all occasions.  From holidays to birthdays, thank you gifts to crafts to make for someone who is ill, this colorful book has it all.

We at FaveCrafts loved Gifted so much that we want to “gift it” on to you!  In this book you’ll find everything from wearable accessories to home decor.  There’s ideas for people who love to knit, people who are hooked on crochet, and even a few projects for those who love to sew, bake, or felt.  This is the ultimate gift giving guide for those who enjoy handmade treasures.

Personally, I love making things for people…but sometimes I’m just at a loss as to what to make.  My brother is near impossible to shop for, and my sister likes too many things to narrow it down to a few ideas!  That’s why I love Gifted.  Even if I don’t make one of the 34 projects included in this book, I can use Gifted as inspiration for thinking of new gift ideas.  This is one book that you will find yourself coming back to again and again.

So be sure to check out the Gifted giveaway page and enter to win this great book!  You can enter once daily, so come back often to increase your chances of winning!

6 Crafty Ways to Say “I Love You”

February 10, 2012 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts Leave a Comment

For us crafty gals, sometimes the best way to express our feelings is through our work.  I know that whenever I want to show someone how I feel, I always wind up making them something.  Whether it’s a scrapbook for my mom’s birthday, a sewn necktie for Father’s Day or just a special handmade card for a friend’s birthday, handmade “labors of love” are always my go-to gifts.

So, with Valentine’s Day just a few short days away, I thought I’d share some of my favorite crafty ways to say “I love you” to that special someone.  And don’t worry if you don’t have enough time to finish these before February 14th. The great thing about all of these projects is they’ll be just as meaningful any time of year.  You can make these for birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones, or even better… as a “just because” present.  Aren’t those the best kind of gift?!

Handmade Cards – One of the easiest ways to say “I love you” is with a card you’ve made yourself!  It doesn’t have to look super professional; it just has to come from the heart!  If you’re looking for inspiration, this “Love You” note card and envelope is one of my favorites, but I also love this Charming Heart Card and the Treasured Love card.

Decorative Picture Frames – If you’re not the craftiest person, picture frames are a great project for you to tackle. You can give yours a personal touch and include a special photo of one of your favorite memories!  These Fancy Frames are so elegant looking, and this Lovely Lace Frame would be perfect for a girly girl.

Flowers from Yarn – Who doesn’t love receiving flowers?  The only thing I don’t like about it is mine tend to die pretty quickly, and nothing’s sadder than a wilting rose. So, why not make that special someone a flower or bouquet that will last forever!  This knitted Peruvia rose is beautiful, and so is this crocheted Always Blooming Bouquet.

Gifts with Photos – Turn your favorite picture of you and your loved one into a keepsake they can display in their home!  I love this personalized photo clock and also these reversible family photo placemats (though it might be sort of strange to eat your dinner on top of your cousin’s face, it’s still super cute as a kitchen decoration!).  You can also preserve special memories in the form of a cute accessory with this Glass Photo Pendant.  Speaking of jewelry…

Jewelry – If there’s a lady in your life who you want to shower with gifts of love, there’s no better present than handmade jewelry!  Make her this “Live, Laugh, Love” charm bracelet and she’ll make it part of her everyday wardrobe; I guarantee it!  I also love the idea of this hidden message locket!

Sweets – The way to just about anyone’s heart is through their stomach, or at least that’s the way the saying goes. So, if you really want to show your love, make them a sweet treat!  Chocolate is almost universally loved, so why not make them these Love Struck Chocolates?  Or even better, how about this Amazing and Edible Chocolate Body Scrub?! If you want to go the candy route, you could always whip up a batch of homemade Conversation Candy Hearts.  And they might not be edible, but these chocolate-inspired crochet patterns would definitely be a hit with anyone who has even the tiniest bit of a sweet tooth!  Check out the Amigurumi Chocolate Fountain, the Heart Shaped Box of Chocolates and the Hot Chocolate Amigurumi!

Give the Gifts They’ll Love

November 11, 2011 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts 2 Comments

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to be more thoughtful.  To schedule weekly phone calls with my long-distance friends so we could catch up on each others’ lives.  To remember my relatives’ birthdays and send them cards not belatedly.  To do things with more purpose and not just halfway.

Well, now that it’s November I can’t exactly say that I’ve been 100% successful with this resolution, but I’ve definitely been making an effort and I’m proud of myself for that.

The real trick, however, is Christmas.  This is the holiday that’s most important when it comes to friends and family, and also when it comes to planning.  I want to make sure I give gifts that are meaningful to the people on my Christmas list, especially the people who are the most special to me.  I don’t want December 20th to roll around and still be struggling for ideas on what to get them.  That’s how last year went and my friends and family all ended up with generic, store-bought gifts and I felt like a lousy friend/daughter/girlfriend/sister/yougetthedrift.

This year is going to be different.  I’ve been brainstorming and compiling lists of things I want to make for my friends and family.  After all, handmade is definitely the way to go if you want to give thoughtful Christmas gifts to the special people in your life.

In my search for fun, interesting, creative gifts perfectly suited for the important people on my Christmas list, I came across a bunch of ideas that I thought would be helpful to people other than just myself.  So I put together this list of 16 Handmade Gifts that hopefully will give you some inspiration for the people on YOUR list.

From handy gifts like a recipe binder and a sewn laptop sleeve to cute home accents like shimmer candles and a monogram mug set, there are some really great ideas for handmade presents in this collection.

Check out these pics for a sneak peak and then click over to the collection to see the full list.

For the fashion lover:

For the bookworm:

For the cook/baker:

This is the first holiday in recent memory where I’ve actually been more excited to give out my presents than receive gifts myself.  I’m just so proud that I was able to find things that really “fit” the people on my Christmas list… things that I know they’ll love and use and wear.  Here’s to hoping I can keep up with this resolution next year too!

Tell me:  What’s the best homemade gift you’ve ever put together?  Who was it for?  Did they like it?

Guest Post: A Scrapbooker’s Gift Basket

July 7, 2011 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

This guest post was written by Gift Basket Gal.

It’s that time of year again…time to shop for your best (and crafty) friend’s birthday.  She’s always giving you creative gifts and this year you want to impress her with a gift she’ll wish she thought of herself.  With these tips you can make her a gift basket that she’ll love to look at and use!

Compared to the best gift baskets on the web, a homemade one can either look unprofessional or be just as striking if put together properly.  The main component to creating a successful gift basket is knowing your recipient.  Take advantage of Gift Basket Reviews to get a sense of what you want your finished basket to look like.  Many professional gift baskets come with an assortment of gourmet snacks, cheeses and wines.  However, if your recipient is the crafty type, you’ll probably want to indulge their hobbies and not their taste buds.

Scrapbooking is a very popular hobby and one that can translate into a gift basket gift.  You might be thinking, “I don’t know anything about scrapbooking. How can I make a gift basket based around that hobby?”  Conduct research online or visit your local craft store and ask an associate to help you get ideas.  Putting this gift together should be fun for you as the gift maker too, so stick to what you are comfortable with.  For example, if you don’t feel comfortable buying your recipient certain scrapbooking tools because either you don’t think they’ll use them or you don’t know what they’re for, then no worries.  You don’t have to fill this gift with absolutely every scrapbooking tool under the sun.  You can supplement a few scrapbooking tools with your recipient’s favorite candies or snacks.

Start your gift by choosing a basket or fun scrapbooking storage tote or container.  A scrapbooking tote with handles and pockets for storing tools such as scissors, pencils or paint brushes is perfect for the scrapbooker on the go.  A photo box makes a great container for your gift basket as well.  The lid of the photo box can be secured to the bottom of the box with a ribbon.

The supplies you purchase to fill the container are completely up to you.  If you know your recipient has many tools already, pick supplies such as colored paper, cut outs and decorations.  These are items that get used up and will need replenishing.  Another filler option for your gift basket is a gift certificate to a craft store so they can buy supplies they know they like and need.

Assembling the gift and making it presentable is the last step.  Make sure larger items (such as a pack of colored paper or card stock) are placed in the back of your container.  Smaller items should be placed in the front or along the sides.  Take a cue from the Best Gift Baskets online to see how the products in those gifts are displayed.  Finish off the gift with a ribbon or bow that matches or complements the colors of your tote, picture box, or basket.

When making your own gift basket as a gift for someone, the sky is the limit.  The size of your gift, quantity of items to include, and types of gifts is all up to you and the interests of your recipient.  This is why a homemade gift basket is able to rival some of the Best Gift Baskets online.

Guest Post: Making Personalized Gift Boxes

May 3, 2011 by FaveCrafts 4 Comments

This guest post was written by Ashley Lemieux.

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you feel bad for giving a close friend or family member a gift card on their birthday. It just seems so impersonal! I solved that problem by creating personalized gift boxes! Now it doesn’t matter if I stick a gift card in it, because the box it’s in had thought put into it. This project is even for those who feel like they’re not so crafty. YOU CAN DO IT!

What you need:

  • Metal Tin (Can be any size)
  • Mod Podge/Brush
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Pictures
  • Ribbon/Buttons

Directions:

  1. Cut your scrapbook paper to fit the dimensions of your tin.
  2. You will need to cover the front, and both sides of the inside of the tin. I use different, coordinating paper for each side!
  3. Lightly brush mod podge on the front, and place your paper on it.
  4. Repeat for all sides.
  5. Add your picture to the inside of the tin by brushing mod podge on the back of it.
  6. Then, lightly cover the picture in mod podge on the front. Dont worry, it drys!
  7. Next, lightly cover all the sides with mod podge
  8. You can then add ribbon/button to the front (pictured above) by applying mod podge to the back of it.

Now you won’t feel guilty when they open it up to find a gift card!
