FaveQuilts Giveaway: Omnigrid and Fons & Porter Rotary Cutting Supplies from Prym Consumer

April 23, 2013 by FaveQuilts 22 Comments

Now that spring is in full swing, you might be looking to update your stock of crafting tools. After all, you can’t quilt properly with old and damaged products. To make sure your projects are high-quality from start to finish, make sure you have all of these Omnigrid and Fons & Porter Rotary Cutting Supplies from Prym Consumer. They cut down the time you spend prepping your fabric, as well as save you money you may have wasted on extra materials.

Omnigrid and Fons & Porter Rotary Cutting Supplies from Prym Consumer

The first essential tool in this pack is the The Fons & Porter 45mm Rotary Cutter, with a sturdy blade that’s easy and safe to remove, as well as a comfortable grip that will allow both right and left-handed quilters to work for long periods of time without feeling any fatigue or pain in their hands. Something so small and simple like a rotary cutter should not be taken for granted.

This pack also includes the Fons & Porter Basic Rotary Cutting Ruler, another standard supply material that never fails to come in handy. As quilters, you know how important it is to make accurate measurements on every piece of fabric you’re cutting. Mistakes can be costly with fabric being so expensive, but you won’t have to worry about a pile-up of useless pieces with this ruler. The surface prevents fabric from sliding, and all of the lines are clear and readable; there’s nothing that will prevent you from making pristine cuts for your half-square triangles, blocks, and strips.

The last piece of equipment in this pack is the Omnigrid Cutting Mat. Much like the ruler, this piece of equipment is a must-have when it comes to measuring and cutting fabric. The flexible surface is easy to work on, and best of all, holds up against cuts from your rotary blades. You can forget about wear and tear!

Do you think your quilting supplies are a bit outdated? Then enter our giveaway for all of these Omnigrid and Fons & Porter Rotary Cutting Supplies from Prym Consumer by April 30th! These three essential tools will come in handy for any of your upcoming projects and help you spend less time on the basics so you can focus more on making an amazing quilt. There’s still a week left in our giveaway, so enter on FaveQuilts today.

Silhouette Cameo Giveaway: The Ins and Outs

October 26, 2011 by FaveCrafts 94 Comments

I spent the weekend playing with my new Silhouette Cameo (aren’t I lucky?! What a job perk!). I made a bunch of little things that I’ll share with you throughout the week, but mostly I was trying get the hang of how the machine works so I could report back to you. After all, you need to know if it’s worth it to enter to win one (or buy one using our promo code!). Here are the details again:

Here’s how to buy one:

Just use promo code “FAVE” to get yourself a brand spankin’ new Silhouette Cameo with choice of starter kit (Fabric Ink, Rhinestone, Vinyl, or Heat Transfer) for only $299. But hurry, the code only lasts until October 31, and the machines will sell out!

Here’s how to win one:

  1. Like Silhouette on Facebook
  2. Follow Silhouette on Pinterest
  3. Leave a comment on any of our Silhouette blog posts (this one or any post I write this week that has “Silhouette Cameo” in the title) telling me what you would make if you had a Silhouette Cameo.
  4. I’ll randomly pick a winner and announce who won on October 30!

Here’s what I learned:

Setting up the Silhouette Cameo is really simple. You’ve got to install the software on your computer first, but all that entailed was putting the disc in my CD drive and doing what my computer told me to do. The software comes with each machine, and you can also download it from the Silhouette website. You do have to use your computer every time you use the Cameo, but this gives you a lot more control over what you’re cutting too, because you can manipulate everything on the screen.

Once the software is installed, you merely plug the Cameo into a power outlet, connect it to your computer via the USB cable that comes with it, and you’re ready to go! The blade needs to be adjusted depending on what you’re cutting (I turned mine up when I was cutting a cereal box and down when I was cutting printer paper). Adjusting the blade setting is as simple as twisting it until it clicks into place.

You can also adjust the rollers depending on how wide your paper (or other media) is. The best part? If you tell the Silhouette what size and weight of paper you’re cutting, it’ll automatically adjust the blade speed and pressure to match!

The Cameo comes pre-loaded with 50 different shapes to cut. You can also cut text with ANY font you have on you computer (and we all know we can download infinite fonts for free at a number of websites).

I cut this with one of the pre-loaded shapes. Wouldn’t this be a cool scrapbook background?

And here’s the negative space left behind:

Yeah, that wasn’t fun peeling all those leftover shapes off.

If you want to cut a shape you don’t have, Silhouette sells shapes on their website as well! They have approximately infinity shapes for sale, and they add new ones all the time. Each shape is about 99 cents, and your machine comes with a $10 gift card to use for shape-purchasing! I already spent mine on these:

I blew up the chandelier ornament I purchased and made a kitschy full-size chandelier for my kitchen:

As if that wasn’t cool enough, I then discovered the Trace tool. Readers, prepare to have your mind blown. I found this tutorial on how to use the Trace tool and followed it in order to create my own shape to be cut. That’s right–you can use this tool to turn any jpeg image into a shape that your Silhouette can cut. My mind is clearly blown as well.

You can also alter existing images or combine purchased images with your own designs, fonts, or traced shapes to make one-of-a-kind shapes. So if you’re crafty enough, you’ll never need to spend a dime at the Silhouette store (though they have so many cute shapes for sale, I bet you will anyway).

There’s so much more you can do with a Silhouette Cameo! Stay tuned for more craft ideas and insights tomorrow!

What would you make with a Silhouette Cameo? Leave a comment below for a chance to win one!

FaveCrafts 365 Rotary Cutter News!

March 17, 2011 by Maria 7 Comments

I discovered a new, safer way to sharpen my rotary cutter blades and wanted to share this great new product with you. The Grace Company took some time to demonstrate this cool blade cutter, and yes, it works to sharpen most rotary cutter blades. Blades aren’t inexpensive so keeping them sharp is worth the investment. What do you think?

You can buy your rotary cutter supplies at CutRateCrafts.com! Check out this discount craft supply online store for yarns, alcohol inks, scissors, paper, and more!

FaveCrafts 365 Let’s Get Punching!

February 24, 2011 by Maria 1 Comment

One of the coolest new techniques in paper punches is using corner and border punches to punch around the the outside edges of a piece of paper. There are specific dimensions needed to accomplish this, but it’s so easy and such an eye catching effect.  I’ve also used this technique to punch across the top, then down one side of my paper.  Check it out! There is a mini slide show at the end of the video showing the different ways to punch. Although these punches are often sold in sets, you can mix and match with a little care. I do recommend having a shape craft knife and cutting mat close by if you aren’t the most accurate of souls (that’s me!).

You can find many of these punches at CutRateCrafts.com! I love shopping at this online discount craft store and especially enjoy the great customer service.

Ask Maria “How To Choose A Cutting System?”

June 4, 2010 by Maria 3 Comments

Question

I’m thinking of buying a cutting system since I really like the die cuts I see at my local craft store, however there are so many different brands that I’m not sure which system to buy. Any suggestions?

Bea, WA

I made this cute little purse on a die cutting machine from Sizzix. It opens!

Wow Bea, great minds must think alike as I too have been checking out all the wonderful cutting systems available. To select such a system is to really make an investment in your crafting so you need to think about how you are going to use the machine and its accessories. I want to get a system because I love making cards, envelopes, boxes, and other cut/fold/make paper keepsakes thus I was checking out what dies are available to make such things.

Some of the machines are more versatile using any brand of die, while others can be limiting in that area. I have fibromyalgia so I really want a system that had an electric option since cranking is often painful for me. Space might be an issue and there are systems that are digital rather than die, which means less storage space for the entire system. I am also reading different reviews online and asking my social media friends why they like the systems they own.

Bottom line, however, at least for me is that I’m able to really understand how the system works. Does a local retailer carry the model I like? Are there local classes I can take? Does the manufacturer offer good customer service and lots of ideas to motivate me? Any time we invest in machines, tools, even basic supplies it’s nice to know we can get help and stay motivated. There is no way around it, this kind of investment takes homework!
