11 DIY Christmas Wreaths to be Jolly About

September 7, 2015 by FaveCrafts

It’s time to get down to some serious crafting folks. With the kids back in school, the summer winding down, and the fall holidays looming over us closer and closer, we really need to prep for…Christmas! Christmas?! You’re probably thinking I’m out of my mind, but those homemade mantle crafts and DIY garlands aren’t going to make themselves! I started sewing for Christmas about a month ago because I’m still a beginner and I wanted a head start on my homemade tree skirt. Plus, I wanted plenty of crafting time and an organized craft room for all the DIY Christmas decorations I have planned.

11 DIY Christmas Wreaths to be Jolly About

The best part of crafting — free sewing patterns, crochet patterns, and knitting — is that you can take a tutorial or a pattern and still be able to make the craft or pattern with your own personal touch. I normally change colors or patterns, but if you’re super creative, you can imagine an entirely other use. Take wreaths, for example and an adorable deco mesh wreath tutorial. That tutorial may be for spring with bright blues and greens, but you could easily adjust it for a red and green DIY Christmas wreath. Everything can be tailored to suit your needs and tastes.

Those cute deco mesh DIY wreaths are really trendy right now. Not sure what they are? They’re the homemade wreaths that look ruffled like an unraveled roll of ribbon. These were all over my sorority hallways with the names of the sisters in each room. They had these cute wreaths with their letters at the bottom and their names in sparkly letters. A DIY wreath would be a really cute dorm room decor to give as a graduation gift!

Excited for the holidays, I’m checking my supply list twice and heading straight off to the craft store to gather supplies for a few different DIY Christmas wreath ideas. I need to make at least two to cover the whole season. I can’t wait to learn how to make a wreath for every single one of my doors!

11 Angel Craft Ideas That Will Warm Your Heart

October 24, 2014 by FaveCrafts

Even if you aren’t religious, you Christmas just isn’t complete without a few angels. You’ve seen them atop a Christmas tree or lining a mantel,  but there are also a ton of non-traditional angel craft ideas. From tampons (yes, tampons) to Barbie dolls, you can use so many unexpected supplies to create a Christmas angel. Crocheters, there are plenty of patterns for you, too!

Pick one of these angel craft projects and start your countdown to Christmas. It’s never too early to start decorating for the holidays and these sweet and simple projects will put you in the jolliest of moods.

Super Easy Angel Craft Projects

Unique Tampon Angel – Okay, this project is a little controversial. Yes, you do use a tampon and it is displayed on a Christmas tree. Would you make one? Leave a comment and tell us why or why not – we want to hear from you!

Wire Ribbon and Pearl Angel – This project is deceptively easy and looks really sophisticated. You only need a few supplies to get started, making this ideal for frugal crafters. I would definitely hang this on my tree – the delicate and unique look make it a true standout.

Itty Bitty Angel – How ridiculous cute is this little angel? I love the addition of synthetic doll hair – it makes the angel come to life! If you plan to give this away as a gift, model your angel after the recipient and personalize the face. Glasses, moles and other distinctive features will take this project to the next level.

Doily Angel – If you plan to throw a holiday party or festive gathering, make sure your table is perfectly decorated. You only need one paper doily per angel, so you can create a bunch in a short time. Plus, paper doilies are super cheap, so you won’t break the bank when you work on this project.

Little Angel – Crochet beginners will love working on this adorable angel. In just a few minutes, you can crochet both the wings and body. The stitches aren’t intricate and the pieces aren’t huge, so you don’t have to worry about messing up. Use this as an excuse to test your crochet skills and see what you can accomplish.

Extra Glamorous Angel Tree Topper – Who knew a Barbie could be a Christmas crafting MVP? This is the ultimate recycle craft – you’re repurposing an empty plastic bottle, toilet paper roll and yes, a Barbie to create a one-of-a-kind angel. This is a standout craft you won’t soon forget.

Our Favorite Angel Crafts to Make

angel-dogPuppy Angel Christmas Ornament – Immortalize your four-legged friend with this delightful polymer clay ornament. The tiny halo and sparkly eyes are will help your ornament stand out on the tree. If you’re new to the world of clay, this is the perfect project for you.

Cinnamon Angel Garland – Rustic, country-themed crafts are always popular, but this one is especially meaningful. The cinnamon sticks and bay leaves used to string the garland and decorate the angels will make your home smell positively delicious. The subdued colors and small features make this an ideal craft if you just want a tiny touch of holiday flair.

Clay Angel Ornament – Grab that polymer clay – it’s time to get to work! I love the heart motif used throughout this adorable Christmas craft project. This may look like a complicated project, but it’s actually pretty easy to complete.

Ruffled Angel Statue -Use fleece or felt to complete this genius angel craft. Simply wrap your ruffles around a Styrofoam cone for a textured look. If you’re looking for a creative tabletopper or mantel display piece, be sure to work on this project.

Angel Ornament Pattern – Use this as a coaster, wall hanging or tabletop display – it’s that versatile. I love the traditional look of this design and the basic stitches used to complete the piece. Best of all, this is a true one skein pattern, making it ideal for waiting room and long car trips (as long as you’re not driving, of course).

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition?

In Case You Missed It: “11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More”

July 14, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

I am a huge fan of festive attire at any time of year. During the summer, I create wearable crafts with more color than in fall or winter. Around Halloween, I bust out the orange and black and go a little heavier on the eye makeup. At Easter, it’s pastels at all times, and pretty dresses.

The same trend holds true, of course, around Christmastime. Bring on the ugly sweaters, the handmade hats, the holiday earrings. You better believe I’ll find an excuse to wear my knee-high green and red striped socks, and I’ll roll up my skinny jeans to show them off, proudly. To me, nothing says “I’m getting in the holiday spirit” like dressing up in wearable crafts.

You can make great wearable crafts for the holidays when you download the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook! Christmas wearable crafts are perfect gifts for anyone on your Christmas list. Even if your friend, cousin, or child doesn’t love to wear handmade hats or homemade scarves, there’s always the argument of practicality. If it’s cold, you’ll need a hat. Why not make it an elf hat? If it’s brisk, you’ll need a scarf. Why not make it a Fleece Scarf with Pom Poms?

It may be more than six months until Christmas, but making great handmade Christmas gifts takes time . . . especially if you’re going to try making all eleven wearable crafts in this great AllFreeChristmasCrafts eBook!

What you’ll find in this eBook:

Loom Knitted Santa Hats: Talk about getting in the Christmas spirit. Nothing says “Merry Christmas!” like these great Loom Knitted Santa Hats. They’re festive, sure, but they’re also practical: if you live in a seasonal climate, you need to keep that head warm. Put those knitting skills to the test when you knit this great handmade Christmas gift found in the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook.

Santa Scarf: Now this homemade scarf is just so precious, I had to share. The scarf project has you make Santa’s face and beard on one end, and the entire length of the scarf is his hat! The scarf tapers to a point, then you attach a puff ball for the pom-pom, and you have the finished product. Best of all, you don’t need to sew to make this adorable scarf because this blogger gives directions for a no-sew version as well. Find this incredibly endearing scarf in the 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More eBook.

Download a copy of 11 Christmas Gift Ideas: Handmade Scarves, Hats and More; like all of our great eBooks, it’s free!

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas: Recycled Christmas Craft Ideas

April 21, 2013 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

By the time December rolls around, we usually aren’t thinking about green crafting. The weather outside simply forbids any notion of “green”. As Earth Week rolls around though, Little-Old-Me got to thinking that recycled crafts should be incorporated into Christmas. Here are a handful of recycled crafts to decorate or gift with this Christmas.

 Recycled Christmas Card Crafts

Christmas Card LettersChristmas Card Place MatsWrapping From Recycled Cards

I know what you’re thinking, “AllFreeChristmasCrafts, how can I be environmentally conscious when everyone and their second cousin is sending me Christmas cards and letters about their families that I’m obligated to keep for months?” Those cards certainly add up. Then they sit in a basket next to your couch before eventually being thrown away.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how creative you are. Take these Christmas Card Letters, for example. This is a Christmas card craft you can absolutely accomplish. Plus, you’ll love doing it. Select your favorite designs from your Christmas cards and scrapbook them onto wooden letters of your choice.

I loved this idea from Mama Buzz. This is a great Christmas craft for kids that can be used all season long. Use your Christmas cards to make Christmas Card Place Mats. They are easy to make and can be used year after year.

If you’re thinking that you have enough Christmas decorations in your house, another great idea is Wrapping From Recycled Cards. When you think about it, it’s silly to buy pricey wrapping paper that’s just going to be thrown away. Instead, recycle Christmas cards to make wrapping paper. Just remember not to send someone a present wrapped in the Christmas card they sent you!

Make Your Own Recycled Ornaments

Toilet Roll Yule Log OrnamentTin Works OrnamentsPaper and Lace Snowflake Ornament

Being the classy lady that I am, I’m a fan of all things toilet rolls. In all seriousness, though, I’m thoroughly charmed by this Toilet Roll Yule Log Ornament. You’ve got toilet rolls constantly making their way to the trash can, so why not give them a little play during Christmas? DIY ornaments are a great way to recycle during the holidays.

These Tin Work Ornaments involve a different media than our DIY ornaments above. Learn how to make ornaments out of aluminum or tin cans that look store-bought. These are beautiful and can easily be Christmas crafts for kids too.

If you have old music sheets around your house, you can use them for this Paper and Lace Snowflake Ornament. I love the way this snowy ornament looks against pine needles. Keep it in mind as you prepare for Christmas.

Recycled DIY Christmas Gifts

Recycled CrayonsSteniled-T-Shirt-Sleeve-Pouches-BlogUpcycled Wine Vase

Something that snatches the Christmas spirit from me is when I hit the stores in search of a child’s gift. I’ll pick up some terrifying doll with a giant head balancing on a 2-inch body and realize it costs a small fortune. It’s awful, it’s overpriced, and yet I buy it. Don’t waste money on impersonal gifts when you can easily make a homemade present that a child will love. These Recycled Crayons from An Everyday Story are affordable and easy. You can make a bunch of crazy crayon shapes as a pack or simply use them as stocking stuffers. They’re so cool! I might make them as an early Christmas present to myself…

You can also check out this easy sewing project while considering homemade Christmas gifts. Stenciled T-Shirt Sleeve Pouches are the definition of handmade Christmas gifts. They’re super cute and useful too.

This Upcycled Wine Vase is a great DIY Christmas present for friends who are fans of vino. The wine bottle shape is beautiful and can add a stunning decorative element to any home decor.

Keep these ideas in mind as Earth Day approaches. Remember, too, that these are just the tip of the iceberg as far as recycled Christmas crafts go. Our site is full of tons of Christmas crafts for you to explore and enjoy.

28 Top Christmas Crafts from January – Which is Your Favorite?

February 20, 2012 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

Are you a Crafty Christmas Ideas subscriber? AllFreeChristmasCrafts’ thrice-weekly newsletter is filled with DIY ideas, tutorials and projects that you can work on all year long. The Christmas season is the most wonderful time of the year, so why not keep it going even when the season is over? Whether you like to craft with the family or make something more complicated on your own, you’ll always find Christmas tutorials that suit your needs.

We’ve rounded up 28 Popular Christmas Crafts from January and we’re sharing them with you. Sign up for the newsletter and help us pick next month’s top projects!

Here are some more reader favorites from January:

Musical Christmas Wreath – Use a cardboard wreath form and old sheet music (or scrapbook papers) to decorate your door.

Crystal Snowflake Ornaments – Wire and beads – that’s all you need to create your own ornament. This tutorial is also featured in our latest eBook, How to Make Ornaments: 10 Christmas Ornaments to Make.

Snowman Pail Ornament

You might think that January mean the end of Christmas crafting, but think again! Last month, Crafty Christmas Ideas readers were out in full force and they loved everything from snowmen to festive wreaths. It seems that the more versatile the craft, the more popular it was with readers. For instance, the Birdie Ornament isn’t overtly Christmas-related (no Santa, snowmen or religious connotation), but it can be hung on a Christmas tree and made in an afternoon. Similarly, the 10 Minute Fabric Bracelet makes a great Christmas gift and can be worn to a holiday celebration. Best of all, it won’t go out of style and can be worn all year.

This isn’t to say that winter-themed projects weren’t popular. Snowmen and snowflake crafts were huge in January which makes sense considering this month is notoriously snowy! Readers loved turning their warm homes into a winter wonderland. January is the perfect time to stay inside and get creative.

Which one is your favorite? Log on to the site and leave a comment on your favorite project. Be sure to tell us why it’s your favorite!
