Ask Maria “Kids, Attention Spans, and Crafting!”

September 10, 2010 by Maria

Question

How about something one with small children can do in short, albeit INTENSE, bursts of time. How do you pick crafts for kids?

Cheryl from Dream, AZ

Different ages mean different skill levels for kids. The first thing to do is note what your children are interested in or show interest in. Of course there are many projects that appeal to both boys and girls, but also techniques that appeal more to girls and boys and vice versa.  You can check out what local craft stores are offering as classes for kids. Kits are a great way to pinpoint age appropriate crafts. I love looking through all the kits available for kids and thinking about how I can put together something similar, but more personalized, for the kids in my life.

Keep folders of coloring pages. This is the type of craft that can be taken out quickly and put up for future opportunities. Also think about knitting looms, pot holder looms, and other crafts that can be put in a basket for your child to get out and put up easily. Scrapbooks are also great. Again, put all the supplies into a box so your child can open up and play, then put it all back easily. I’d love to hear from other moms! So moms, please post your ideas as a comment to help Cheryl and her kids!

If you have a crafting or creative question you’d like Maria to answer drop her a note at Maria@FaveCrafts.com. She’s got 25 years of experience and enjoys finding answers to your questions!
