Jurassic Park Dinosaur Crafts and DIY Costumes for Kids

In lieu of the newest installment of the Jurassic Park series, your kids (and most likely you) are jumping up and down in excitement for the improved CGI graphics. As you should be! It’s been a long haul since the first movie came out. Universal Studios still has a portion of their theme-park dedicated to the incredible water ride where a T-Rex ends up eating you; when in reality you feel like you fall to your death, finally being soaking wet. I wonder what they will do to the park with the “Raptor Squad” being a thing with Christ Pratt on his motorcycle. Anyway, I’m sure your child is wanting to go see the movie. At your own discretion, parents, by all means go see the movie. But you don’t want your kid to just go in a t-shirt. No, they need an awesome, easy kid’s costume or dino craft to prepare themselves for an incredible movie.

Jurassic World Inspired Crafts

Honestly, I haven’t even seen the movie yet. Though from the record-breaking box office money made the first weekend alone, I feel like my chances of it being really good are, well, really good. I will also admit that it is not until very recently that I saw the first movie in its entirety. Oh, I know. It’s been on TV for forever and a day, but I never had any interest in seeing it. No, I haven’t seen the other two movies in the series, but I have been advised not to do so. I was told by a little pterodactyl that they were the equivalent to how good Jaws 2 and Jaws 3-D are. To each their own.

You’re going to have a roaring-great time making these dinosaur crafts for kids to do. I love the homemade dinosaur hoodie which would be paired great with the homemade tail that wraps around your child’s waist. You don’t have to make these just for the movie! Dinosaur crafts and dinosaur sewing are super awesome ways to get your child into play time and create their own Jurassic world. (See what I did there?)

Halloween How-To: Little Angel Costume

This tutorial is brought to you by Latrice Murphy from Any Occasion.

If you’re like me and have kids, you get a little sticker shock from the price of Halloween costumes. Luckily, my kids have a crafty mom, who will attempt to DIY just about anything for a good price. This year, my daughter said she wanted to be an angel. I went online, researched other ideas and pulled a few thing together very quickly to come up with my DIY angel costume.

Price Breakdown:

  • Tulle (10 yards on sale 40% off = $9)
  • Headband for waistband (Free- from my stash)
  • Wire hangers (Free from my cleaners)
  • White long sleeve t-shirt ($6 Target, but it will get worn a lot)
  • Shoes ($6 from Wal-Mart, but will get worn a lot)
  • Feather Boa ($3 after 40% off)
  • Tights ($3 from Target, but will get worn more)

Total cost- $27 (I bought items I knew would get worn for the rest of the school year, so my cost is actually lower if you think of it that way)

Other Materials:

costumes5

  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Doilies or coffee filters
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Wire snips
  • Adhesive tape
  • Duct tape

To Make the Wings and Halo:

First, you need to snip the curved hanger part off and duct tape the straight parts together. After that, you’ll want to take apart a third hanger and create a halo going perpendicular to the where you attached the wings together.

costumes4

Next, you want to cover the wings with the doilies using a adhesive tape runner. I folded mine mostly in half and filled in.

costumes8

Next up, you want to glitter those wings by brushing them lightly with Mod Podge and shaking white shimmery glitter all over. I did this part outdoors.

costumes6

To finish the wings up, use your hot glue gun to adhere the feather boa along the edge and around the halo. Take your time and don’t burn yourself like I did. This is what the finished wings and halo will look like.

costumes7

To Make the Skirt:

Cut your tulle down to 3” wide pieces and measure how long you want them to be. You will be able to trim later as well once the child tries it on.

costumes1

Tie the pieces of tulle through the openings in the headband all around. We ended up with three rows to make a nice full skirt. You can add as much or as little as you would like.

costumes3

Trim up the ends to the height of the child after they’ve tried it on. This is what the finished skirt will look like.

Add tights, shoes and a t-shirt and you’re done. It took me about two hours to complete this project, but my daughter loves it and can’t wait to wear it this Halloween and use it for dress up at home. Try something fun today and make this year’s Halloween even more special.

National Sewing Month 2013

Princess Gloves

Hello friends, this is Anshu from Blooms and Bugs. I’m sharing a sewing tutorial for princess gloves or fingerless gauntlets, because, well, what princess worth her tiara doesn’t have these posh gloves. These gloves make a great accessory with all those princess costumes and are also a great addition to her dress-up box after Halloween.

Best of all, this pattern is free and takes less than half an hour to make. So lets get started..shall we?

Princess Gloves in size ( 2T – 6T)

Supplies:

Stretch Velvet fabric – 10 inches

Elastic thread

Time: 30 mins

Level: Beginner

Seam Allowance: 3/8 inches ( unless otherwise specified)

Pattern: Self drafted (only rectangles of two sizes are used in these gloves)

Cut out the following pattern pieces:

  • 2 rectangles 11 inches x 7 inches (7 inches part should be on stretchable side).
  • 2 rectangles 1.75 inches x 1 inch (1 inch part should be on the stretchable side).

Princess Gloves

Fill the bobbin with elastic thread and sew two 6 inch seams along the center of the width (7 inches part).

Princess Gloves

Sew two more seams along one side.

Princess Gloves

On the other end, line up the raw edges and sew two inches from one end (right sides together).

Princess Gloves

Line up the one inch side of the smaller piece so that the center of the 1 inch side falls on the seam line. Sew along the raw edges (right sides together).

Princess Gloves

Fold the main piece in half lengthwise (right sides together). Sew a seam starting with the smaller piece all the way to the bottom of the glove.

Princess Gloves

Stretch velvet is a knit fabric which means we don’t need to finish the edges. All we need to do now is snip all the stray thread and try them on over our little fashionista.

Princess Gloves

That was all about making fingerless gloves or gauntlets for your princess costumes. Visit me at Blooms and Bugs for more costume sewing tutorials or my etsy store for buying a custom-made costume for your little girl.
