AllFreeJewelryMaking Beading Challenge: And the Winner Is…

Well the Beading Challenge is over, and we had a blast! We loved seeing all of your incredibly creative jewelry designs, each inspired by the same painting (Picasso’s renowned Acrobat and Young Harlequin) but each so unique and beautiful in its own way. The entries spanned techniques, materials, and styles of all kinds, and it was amazing to see how everyone interpreted the theme in their own way.

First and foremost, we want to thank all of you who participated. This Beading Challenge wouldn’t have been a success without you! As this was our first time ever running a contest like this, we weren’t sure how it was going to go (or if we were going to get any entries…), and we were so excited and touched to see you engaging with the Challenge, posting your pictures, and commenting on each others’ designs. We think this Challenge has done much to begin building an amazing and supportive beading community, and we can’t wait to see it grow even further! So again, thank you. From the bottom of our bead-loving hearts. 🙂

OK, enough sentimental jargon; let’s get to the good stuff! You want to know who won, right? Well there were so many spectacular entries, it would have been impossible to choose a winner. Each design was amazing in its own way; each picked up on different details of the painting. We had always planned on choosing a winner at random, and we thought this was the fairest way to go about it since you all did such a great job! So without further ado, the winner of the AllFreeJewelryMaking August 2012 Beading Challenge is…

…member Sumerlovin and her awesome cork and turquoise bead earrings!

Congratulations, Sumerlovin! We love how you used cork to add texture to the piece and how you picked up the triangle motif of the Young Harlequin’s clothing in the turquoise beads. We also think alternating the direction of the turquoise triangle beads was a nice subtle, but smart touch. Well done! And now for your efforts, you are being awarded the stunning Harlequin Earring Kit, designed by Linda Hartung of Alacarte Clasps and WireLace and featured on the cover of BeadStyle magazine‘s September issue! Congratulations! Please contact us with your mailing address so we can send you your prize!

You all did such an outstanding job, we wish we could send you all a prize! Let’s take a look once more at some of the stunning entries we had in the Beading Challenge:

What an incredible group of designs! Thanks again to everyone who participated. Keep creating!

If we hosted another Beading Challenge in the future, would you participate?

Beading Challenge Update: A Look at Your Progress!

We’re halfway through the AllFreeJewelryMaking Beading Challenge of August 2012, and we’ve been having so much fun seeing the designs our readers are coming up with! We wanted to give you a little update on how things are coming along and remind you that there’s still plenty of time to enter!

If you’ve been keeping up with all the Beading Challenge news and info, then you already know that the painting we’ve chosen for inspiration is Acrobat and Young Harlequin by Pablo Picasso. We invited our readers (and anyone else who wants to join!) to create an original jewelry design inspired by this painting in some way, whether it was in the colors, the shapes, the textures, the mood – whatever inspires you to create!

Then all you have to do is upload a photo of your jewelry project to the Beading Challenge Flickr group, and you’re entered! It’s a fun way to challenge yourself to create something different, and it’s a chance to win a fabulous jewelry making prize! Let’s take a look at what some of you have come up with so far:

We love how each design is so different, yet each one so clearly corresponds to the painting. This is exactly what the Beading Challenge is all about! Seeing and appreciating all our different jewelry design styles and how each one of us interprets the same source of inspiration differently.

We’re thrilled with the results so far, but we still want to see more of you joining in the fun! You can easily make a project in an evening or even an hour and enter it in our Challenge. We want to further build this great jewelry making community we’ve started, so get creating and let’s see what you can come up with! (And if that’s not motivation enough for you, don’t forget by submitting a design in the Challenge, you’re entered for your chance to win the Harlequin Earrings Kit, featured in the September issue of BeadStyle magazine!)

We hope to see your jewelry design soon! For more details about the contest, check out our first Beading Challenge blog post. Good luck, and happy beading!

Have you started working on your Beading Challenge design yet? (You still have until August 31!)

Join the AllFreeJewelryMaking Beading Challenge!

We are super excited to announce the first ever AllFreeJewelryMaking Beading Challenge! Make a piece of original jewelry inspired by Picasso’s “Acrobat and Young Harlequin” and be entered to win the Harlequin Earrings kit, featured in the September issue of BeadStyle magazine!

Come one, come all! All month long for the month of August, we welcome our readers, our followers, and all fans of DIY jewelry to join our first ever Beading Challenge! Here at AllFreeJewelryMaking, we love seeing our readers’ jewelry designs and creations, so we thought it would be fun to give you a little challenge to inspire you and put your jewelry making skills to the test.

All you have to do is create your own original jewelry design inspired in some way by the painting above, “Acrobat and Young Harlequin” by a little painter called Picasso (perhaps you’ve heard of him?), upload a photo of your original design to our Beading Challenge Flickr group, and you’re entered for your chance to win the Harlequin Earrings kit (featured in BeadStyle magazine’s September issue and designed by Linda Hartung of Alacarte Clasps and WireLace)! Fun, right?

Your design can be inspired by the color palette of the painting, by the Harlequin theme, by the shapes and designs in the painting—whatever inspires you to create! The point is to think about jewelry making in a new way, to challenge yourself as a jewelry designer, and to interact with your fellow jewelry makers and see what different pieces you create. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  • One entry allowed per person.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the United States or Canada to be eligible to win the prize.
  • If you are not a U.S./Canadian citizen or 18+ and still want to submit a design, feel free! However, you will not be eligible to collect the prize.
  • The deadline to enter is August 31, 2012, at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

Let the Beading Challenge begin!

Where do you usually draw inspiration for your jewelry designs or other crafty creations?

Summer Camp Week

Craft Tutorial for Sleep Away Camp: Daisy Decorated Diary

Kids can journal their entire week in this Daisy Decorated Diary, making notes, drawing pictures and remembering stories of their favorite times at sleepaway camp. This precious craft project from EK Success Brand is a great way for first time campers and veterans alike to commemorate their time away at summer camp.

Materials:

  • EK Success Brand Super Paper Pad
  • EK Success Brand Tiny Letters Bubble Stickers
  • EK Success Brand Fancy Flowers Stacked Stickers
  • EK Success Brand Brilliant Butterflies Stickers
  • EK Success Brand Stencil Ruler
  • Craft Scissors
  • Craft Glue

Instructions:

  1. Choose 2 different papers for the back cover. Turn over one of the papers so that the white side faces up.
  2. Set the front side of your notebook on the white paper. Trace around your notebook, and cut out the tracing. Repeat this step for the back of your notebook. If your notebook is 6 inches or smaller, both sides will fit on one piece of paper. If not, select another piece of paper for the back cover.
  3. Apply glue to the white side of one of the cut paper pieces. Carefully line up the paper to the front of your notebook, and press it down. Repeat on the back cover. Smooth out any bubbles by gently pressing across the paper.
  4. Measure and cut a 4-inch wide strip from your second patterned paper. Trim it to match the height of your notebook.
  5. Center and glue the strip of paper so that it covers the notebook’s spine. The strip should overlap onto the front and back covers.
  6. Cut a piece of ribbon to match the height of your notebook. Glue the ribbon on the front cover, over the seam where the 2 papers meet.
  7. Choose 3 flowers from the Fancy Flowers Stacked Stickers. Peel off the backing, and press onto the cover.
  8. Choose 2 butterflies from the Brilliant Butterflies Shiny Stickers. Peel off the backing, and press onto the cover.
  9. Choose the Tiny Letters Bubble Stickers that spell your name, and press them along the ribbon.

FaveQuilts Giveaway: Circa 52 Fabric from Birch Fabrics

Circa 52 is a playful collection of 10 organic cotton fabrics in shades of yellow, blue, orange, gray, and a few touches of red. The line ranges from folksy woodland scenes to futuristic outer space motifs, maintaining a retro feel throughout. Circa 52 draws on graphic mid-century style, combining a variety of prints that can be incorporated in either kid’s quilts or more adult patterns. The backbone of the collection is made up of 6 medium-scale prints against solid color backgrounds. The standout, large-scale prints of Circa 52 bring together an unusual combination of themes, all set against natural white backgrounds. Two forest prints replete with flora and fauna create a counterpoint to an urban traffic scene and a space age print.

Quilters and their kids are sure to be delighted by these fun prints! The 100% organic cotton poplin makes the Circa 52 collection a safe bet for baby quilts, children’s quilts, and even clothing and bedding.

FaveQuilts.com is giving away a fat quarter bundle of Circa 52 from Birch Fabrics to one lucky winner. It could be you!
