8 Craft Trends for 2019

January 24, 2019 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

Craft trends for 2019 should make their way into your projects and home decor this year. You have 11 more months to make sure you’re on trend! After attending the 78th annual Creativation show in Phoenix, we’ve come away with some thrilling new projects and old favorites to try in 2019.

Macrame

Macrame was trending at the 2018 Creativation Show and it made its reappearance at this year’s event as well. Wall hangings and plant hangers were abundant at yarn company booths across the show floor.

A macrame lampshade as seen at the Plaid booth.

(We created a roundup of 11 Macrame Plant Hanger Tutorials inspired by this trending craft! Check it out.)

Uniquely Beautiful Dream Catchers

In a similar vein, dream catchers sprouted up at the show this year, complete with pom poms and doilies embedded!

Dream catchers spotted at the Darice booth.

Yarn Crafts without Knitting or Crochet

Knitting and crochet are popular at the show every year; these are two crafts that aren’t going away any time soon. However, this year yarn companies released new loop yarn that allows fiber enthusiasts to make knit projects without any tools—just use your fingers!

Bernat’s new Alize Blanket-EZ yarn, featuring unique loops. Learn how to make the EZ textures blanket here.

P.S. Explore more yarn crafts in our collection of 55 Yarn Crafts without Knitting.

Succulents Are Never Leaving Us

Succulents, air planters, terrariums, oh my! These striking plants are as popular as ever, emerging in scrapbooking lines, paper crafts, and more.

Dogs Wearing Glasses, and Corgis in General

I saw at least three dogs wearing glasses, or rather, images of dogs in glasses, on the show floor. They were spotted in embroidery kits, heat-transfer vinyl, diamond art kits, and more. Time for nerdy cute style!

This glasses-and-bowtie adorned Hug a Pug image was spotted at the Diamond Dotz booth, among many other sparkly creations!

Related: my Dad happened to text me this photo of our family dog, Mocha, while I was at the show.

Diamond Art

MAKE WAY for the most exciting, sparkly new craft that was showcased this year! Diamond art kits by companies like Diamond Dotz and Leisure Arts are like embroidery or paint-by-number with flatback gemstones for the prettiest canvases. Check out these examples:

Similar to Diamond Art, other takes on painting by number appeared at the show. One of my favorite booths was StickTogether, which invites people to craft together with large scale sticker kits! Sometimes keeping your hands busy with an activity or goal serves as the perfect ice breaker when gathering people together. At the show, they had passersby add stickers to this image. By Day 3, the image was complete:

Marbling and Geodes

Unique paint pouring methods, sealers, and more were popular at paint manufacturer booths throughout the show.

Featuring FolkArt paint at the Plaid booth, these are some of the incredible creations showcased using these techniques.

Vinyl

Last but not least, vinyl was popular across crafting genres at the show. There were entire company booths dedicated to vinyl, and many fabric companies as well as paper crafts and die cutting brands featured crafts with vinyl. We’ve seen a number of them show up in our User Submitted Articles as well, so this trend is definitely on the rise!

These projects and products were on display at the EK Success booth. Vinyl is a quick and easy way to make really adorable, decorative projects.

What craft trends will you follow in 2019?

Bead&Button Show 2014: Hot Trends and New Friends

June 14, 2014 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts Leave a Comment

This past weekend the editors of FaveCrafts and AllFreeJewelryMaking had a blast touring the Bead&Button Show in Milwaukee, collected a new list of hot trends, and met some amazing designers we can’t wait to introduce you to! From the crazy color combinations to cute little animal beads to fabulous new products, The Bead and Button Show opened our eyes to what’s hot and happening this summer.

  300--20140606_101325

If you have never heard of the Bead&Button Show you’re in for a treat, and possibly a new annual tradition! Located up North in Milwaukee, WI, the Bead and Button Show is the largest jewelry and bead show in the world, hosting over 300 talented designers and companies that are dedicated to the crafty world of beading (and buttoning)! These designers and companies each have their own booths that display and sell their patterns, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and products–plus, some of the companies even hosted “Make and Takes!” The show will also hosts over 700 bead and jewelry classes. It doesn’t get more fun for beaders like us than being able to walk through a conference dedicate to tiny, shiny, beads and buttons!

Color Trends

This year, bright colors are all the rage. From shades of sky blue and teal to fuchsia and coral, this summer, the bolder the better. We noticed a great focus on blue, teal, and turquoise which was complemented by an assortment of corals, reds, and oranges. That being said, this summer the focus should clearly be on cheerful beads that add a POP of color to your outfit!

Bead Trends

This year at Bead&Button, we noticed a hot selection of seed beads, rhinestones, and seas glass. These top trends are great jewelry projects for beaders to work on during the summer–especially when it comes to sea glass! Using these different types of beads to create large statement necklaces was spotted at the show, which is another fun option for summer beaders.

Trends from New Friends

We met a lot of talented designers during our stay at Bead&Button, and no one knows the beading world like a designer! Take it from an expert like Hannah Rosner, spikes and skulls are back IN! Also, those amazing double-holed seed beads are in high demand. Another really cool beading trend we saw was the increased popularity of dichroic glass beads, and Karen Bruns’ Designs had an amazing display of them. These glass beads undergoe a color change in certain lighting conditions, which is super-cool!

Link Love: Pretty In Pink

February 6, 2014 by FaveCrafts 2 Comments

Valentine’s Day is just a week away! I still don’t have a Valentine (Ryan Gosling hasn’t returned my calls for some reason), but I am really starting to love the sights and sounds of this holiday. One of my favorite aspects of Valentine’s Day is the pretty colors. I’m a girly girl and I simply love pink, so you can imagine that this pretty hue make me extra cheery. I’m starting to notice that I’m not the only one who loves pink – it’s making a huge statement in the DIY world!

There are so many lovely pink projects on FaveCrafts and to be honest, I love them all. However, one of my personal favorites is the Princess Afghan. What little girl wouldn’t want her very own pink blanket? The design isn’t complicated and the colors are muted, making it an ideal compliment to anyone’s home decor. This blanket reminds me of a pink afghan from my childhood – I would carry it around with me and curl up with it all year long. Now, that afghan is one of my most treasured possessions. Another great crochet pattern is the Pink Grapefruit Dishcloth, which only required two skeins of yarn and is perfect for beginners. If you’re still looking for Valentine’s Day crafts, consider creating Pink and Red Rose Bouquet Ball or Pink and Red Crocheted Hearts – both of which are adorable, fun to make and oh so pretty to look at.

Valentine’s Day will come and go, but pink will always look good. If you’re a girly girl like me or just want to embrace a more understated look, you can’t go wrong when you think pink.

Every year, Pantone determines a color of the year, and it’s picked up by designers, celebrities, and the best DIY websites. Fashionable Color Theory: Black and White 2

December 5, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

This guest post was written by Corissa McClay for MakerCraft.

I’ve always found color theory useful in how I design my jewelry, which is why I’m sharing it with you. And here we are at our final color theory post. The first three were Monochromatic and Analogous, Complementary and Triadic, and Black and White with color. If you haven’t read them go check them out.

No Color Allowed

This final post is some general tips on using black and white by themselves, without extra colors to accent them. I’ve always had issues with jewelry designs that didn’t use any color. I’d feel like they should be the easiest thing to design; no color equals less problems. But that’s never been the case. So here’s my thoughts on the subject. Feel free to leave your own in comments.

Keeping Jewelry Classy

On thing I love about black and white is that when you get it right it looks amazing. It matches pretty much any outfit, and can often range from incredibly simple to very complex. In fact, my favorite black and white design I’ve ever made was for my mom to wear when I got married.

Making that taught me a couple things:

  • Natural stone is great for classy black and white jewelry: I used hematite and pearl in this. If you’re going for classy nothing is as good as pearls, and the hematite was earthy and solid enough to match. I had originally thought about going with glass, but in the end the natural colors worked best.
  • Balance is key: You don’t want one color to overwhelm the other. If you have too much of one or the other you’ll limit what you can wear it with (black on black makes for bad contrast). You can also throw off the design. Too much black can leave your design feeling heavy, while too much white can look washed out. In general, I think it’s best to make sure your jewelry is well balanced.

Since then I’ve felt better about designing in black and white, which let me pick up a couple more tricks.

  • Match jewelry color to material: You can get around the issue of how heavy looking an all black piece of jewelry can be by using the right material. A translucent or semi-opaque glass or acrylic bead will lighten the design, and let you work in all one color. Sometimes you can use the translucency to get shades of grey as well, which also adds visual variety to your design.
  • White is a statement color: Yes, bright colors attract attention. But an all white necklace against a bright colored outfit will glow. It’s a good subtle look, and if you use lighter acrylic beads you can get a long, maybe multi-strand, necklace without having to worry about weight.

Go non-symmetrical: Black and white are natural opposites. Think the yin and yang symbol. The colors are in balance, but not necessarily put together in a symmetrical way. Black and white are easier to use in more creative designs and patterns because you know they go together. Here’s an example of this:

So there are my tips on designing with black and white. I’m sure there’s more. If you’ve got some, share them in comments. And if you’ve made a necklace with our app using these colors, let me know so I can show it off!

Color Theory for Jewelry Makers: Part 2

November 4, 2011 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

This guest post was written by Corissa McClay for MakerCraft.

As we move into fall things are getting rainy and dark, and people start adding color to their outfits to fight back the weather-change blahs. That makes it the perfect time for the second post in our Fashionable Color Theory series!

Review

Last time we went over the color wheel and monochromatic and analogous color schemes (Go here if you missed it).

They’re fairly simple color palettes, and great for accenting and spicing up an already colorful summer outfit.  But the fall makes us (me particularly) ready for something a bit more complex, or eye-catching. So this time we’ll be diving into a couple more color schemes suited to fall.

Complementary

A complementary color scheme is made up of two colors directly across from each other on the color wheel. One of those is what makes the fall so lovely:

Complementary color schemes are great, because there’s so many ways to use them, and they’re so easy to recognize. They really pop, because the two play off of each other making each seem brighter and more bold. That makes them the perfect antidote to a rainy autumn.

You can use them a couple different ways too. For something subtle you can pair a single color piece of jewelry with clothes that complement it. You can also go bolder and use the complements in a single piece.

Triadic

The triad color scheme is exactly what it sounds like: Three colors. The trick though is picking the right colors. In this case it’s three colors that are equidistant on the color wheel, like so:

The triad creates a vibrant design. A word to the wise though; Pick one color to be dominant. If you try to balance all three colors equally the design can become confusing and difficult to follow. Balance it right, with one dominant and two accents and you’ll have a harmonious design to brighten your day.

Once again, pairing this with clothes is easier than it might seem. You have three colors to pick from. To make your jewelry a bit more subtle you should match you clothing colors to the dominant color of the piece. That will make it blend in a bit more, and let the accent colors be your main contrast. Flip that approach, with one accent matching your clothing, and you’ll have a design that springs out and takes center stage.

That’s the basics of complementary and triadic color schemes. Take some time and play with them, and see what you come up with. In the next post of this series we’ll talk about black and white, and how to use them with other colors, and by themselves.
