Let It Snow! Make n’ Take Fun with Therm O Web

December 10, 2016 by FaveCrafts

On December 8th, we had the lovely opportunity to learn how to make a foiled card with Dawn from Therm O Web! If you’re not sure you’ve heard of Therm O Web, you’re probably familiar with their Deco Foil sheets (among other adhesive products)! We had a wonderful time playing with this Deco Foil on our cards.

Dawn brought a lovely package of materials for us to do our make and take, and the card was so fun and easy to put together. See that circle with “Let it snow” written on it? That was printed with a laser printer, and laser ink works with Deco Foil. Note: you must use laser ink. Foils do not work with an inkjet printer.

Behold! All you need to adhere the foil to the ink is a laminator machine. Run it through…

It came out perfectly!

You can also stick the foil to glue from Therm O Web’s Deco Foil adhesive pens. We drew stars and snowflakes inside the cards, added the foil, and boom:

Easy as pie! Using the adhesive pens and bits of foil is such a great way to add a bit of interest to any blank spot on a card, scrapbook layout, or any paper craft.

Die cutting the circles gave us, of course, perfect circles, and also added some lovely layers to our card.

Here is what some of our staff had to say:

I sent this card to my friend, and she was shocked that I made it myself. This card was easy to make, yet it looked like it was made by a professional. -Beth Ann Morely, Editor

“I’m not the craftiest person, but using the Therm O Web products to create such a beautiful seasonal card was easy! I love the way the finished product looks. The different colors and textures make the card unique and unlike anything you’d see in a greeting card store. The hardest part of the process was deciding who would be the lucky recipient of such a stunning handmade card!” – Kathryn Abrams, Editor

“I love the look of homemade cards, but I hadn’t done much paper crafting before. It was great to learn a new skill while trying out Therm O Web’s products. I especially liked using the Deco Foil – it made the cards look so festive and fun. Plus, I got to take home a beautiful holiday card at the end!” – Natalie Taylor, Editor

“It was so much fun having Therm O Web in the office. Not only was the card that we made beautiful, it was surprisingly easy to create! Even some of our editors with minimal craft experience created something truly stunning. As a company, we welcome any opportunity to step away from our computers for an hour or two and explore our creative side as a group. It’s an added bonus when we get to play around with the products that we write about on a daily basis, and get to know the faces behind the names of our company contacts!” – Jenny Benoit, Managing Editor

Clearly we had a great time!

How to Watercolor Roses

August 15, 2016 by FaveCrafts

Learning how to watercolor is one of the most requested crafting techniques when it comes to the FaveCrafts audience. This charming and trendy painting technique is a stunning way to add subtle color to your DIY projects and home. The tutorial below shows you how to paint watercolor roses for a paper craft project, but you could easily use the steps to create wall art, handmade cards and more.

How to Paint Watercolor Roses

Today’s project is brought to you by the upcoming collection of international projects, Around the World with 80 Artistss. This collection of projects is designed to highlight the diversity and ingenuity of crafters and artists across the word. Look out below for our interview with the author and project champion, Mahe Zehra Husain of the Creative Art Academy.

Click here to read out interview with the author of this collection.

How to Paint Watercolor Roses

I want to share a fun, quick Watercolor Technique with you on how to create cute, playful Roses in no time – even without any or very little watercolor skills. I love this Technique not only because it’s quick & easy, but also because those Roses are so versatile in using them – you can use it to create quick, fun Cards with your Watercolor Roses, but also use them to embellish your Scrapbook Layouts or to add some fun Accents to your Mixed Media Projects or Art journal Pages etc.

Materials:
• Watercolors of your choice
• Round tip brush
• Heavyweight Watercolor Paper
• Scissors
• Glue / 3D Adhesive Pads
• Cardstock for the Card / a Paper Gift bag  (or something else you’d like to add your flowers to)
• Stamps to add sentiments

Instructions

  1. Decide a color for your Rose Blossom (I go with a shade of red here). Create a nice, watery mix of your color, load your round tip brush with it and you’re good to start.
    How to Paint Watercolor Roses
  2. We’re working our way outwards starting in the center of the blossom. Start with two little half-circle shapes.
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 2
  3. Then add two larger half-circle shapes around the center. That’s the way we’re going to build up our rose / the rose petals. Make sure to take advantage of the brush tip and vary the pressure of the brush to create variation in the thickness of the lines as you go – this creates a natural petal-look.
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 3
  4. The white space in between the individual brushstrokes / petals is very important, so make sure to keep this white space. Keep on adding those lines / brushstrokes working your way outwards.
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 4
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 4b
  5. Also, play with the amount of color pigment & water as you go to create variation in the color intensity. If you want to go a little fancy you can even use a second or third color and slightly add it to the still wet first color – let the colors blend into each other for a really cool look.
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 5
How to Paint Watercolor Roses 5b
  6. Once you’re happy with the result, add some green leaves. I would suggest mixing some green from your watercolor palette with some yellow for a very natural looking shade of green with a little variation in the color.
    How to Paint the Leaves
  7. Keep those leaves very simple as well – just start right underneath the blossom with a very basic leaf-shape.
How to Paint the Leaves 2
  8. Add a little stem if you like and a second leaf – that’s all it takes.
    Andrea_Gomoll_WatercolorRoses_09
  9. Create several roses – play with different sizes, vary the brushstrokes, play with different colors. Also, paint some simple single green leaves. Then cut them out – leaving a small white border around the design.
    Cutting Out Accents 2
    Cutting Out Accents
  10. Stamp a sentiment with your favorite stamps (or create your own using Alphabet Stamps). Cut this out as well.
    Sentiment
  11. Now you’re ready to apply your watercolor images to your project. I adhere them to a plain white card here and to a cute little paper gift bag. Be creative – you can embellish so many things and project with these flowers – your scrapbook pages, your Art Journal pages, some hand lettered projects, a cute little canvas or a picture frame!
    Multiple roses
  12. To add dimension and interest to your project use 3D foam pads / 3D gluedots. Layer the different blossoms and leaves to create cute little bouquets.
    Layer Roses
  13. You can give it a little more of an artistic look by adding some small paint splatters. Choose a black color or a dark brown for some contrast or just a color that is matching your blossoms. Load your brush with a watery mix of your watercolor and slightly tap the brush with your finger to add some small paint splatters to your project. (this takes a little bit of practice – so you might want to get used to it on a piece of scrap-paper first before using this technique on your finished project).
    Splatter Paint
    Splatter Paint 2
  14. And you’re done!
    Final Project

Iris Paper Folded Christmas Tree Handmade Card

October 21, 2015 by Vicki O'Dell

I love Iris Paper Folding! It is fun and relaxing, plus it’s a great way to use up leftover scrapbooking paper. This Christmas tree pattern is easy if you have not tried Iris Paper Folding before. You can create a couple of styles with all of the same pattern/color of paper in one area or alternate them to create another look for your handmade card. If you’re looking for fun paper crafts for the holidays, then a beautiful handmade card is a great option!

Begin at the #1 position and cover that portion of the pattern with paper.

Tape along the outside of the pattern where the paper will overlap to adhere the folded paper to the back side of the colored cardstock.

NOTE: The folded side of the scrapbook paper always faces the center of the pattern.

NOTE: You can cut or tear the strips of paper to the correct length. Whichever works best for you.

Cover the #2 position with the next color of scrapbook paper.

Continue until all of the numbers are covered by taping the strips of paper to one another and to the outside edge of the pattern.

Fill in the center with scrapbook paper or a bit of the cardstock.

Tape around the edge of the cardstock and center it in the middle of a blank card face. Press well to adhere.

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims

August 31, 2015 by Lisa Fulmer

I love using a set of coordinated papers to make handmade greeting cards. Everything works together beautifully, from the darks to the lights to the pretty patterns. Adding a touch of bling certainly adds extra interest to the flat cardstock, but I want to add even more personality and dimension to my DIY cards.

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims

Ribbons and washi tape are lovely, but what I really love using are decorative trims – the kind for sewing! Decorative trims come in so many different designs and they really make your homemade cards pop with frolic and fun!

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims

Supplies:

  • White lacy embroidered trim
  • Blue folded card – 5” x 7”
  • Pale background cardstock panel – 4.5” x 6.5”
  • Patterned cardstock panel – 4” x 5”
  • Markers – pink, yellow, blue
  • Scotch tape
  • Paper adhesive
  • Clear gel glue
  • Self-adhesive rhinestones

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims
1. Color a 6.5″ length of white embroidered trim with markers – just tap the color on without rubbing the delicate threads too much.

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims
2. Ink the edges of the background panel with a marker. I really like how each layer of cardstock stands out when you ink the edges.

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims
3. Slice the patterned panel into 4 strips (even or varied widths) and ink the edges. Glue them like windowpanes (with space in-between) to the background panel, working from the outside in toward the center for even spacing.

Glam Up Your Handmade Greeting Cards with Decorative Trims
4. Use clear gel glue to adhere the trim to the front of the card panel. Dab a bit of glue along the edges to prevent unraveling.

5. Adhere the embellished panel to the folded card, add a few rhinestones in the flowers and you’re done!

What do you use to embellish your handmade cards?

Global Gala: 14 Around the World Crafts

July 16, 2014 by FaveCrafts

From the Winter Olympics to the FIFA World Cup, 2014 has been filled with opportunities to celebrate diversity and learn about other cultures. Learning about different countries and their unique customs is a great way to grow a better understanding of those around us.

Of course, nothing beats traveling the globe and experiencing these cultures firsthand, but if you can’t travel, you can make those faraway places feel closer to home. These around the world crafts from FaveCrafts and AllFreeHolidayCrafts will help you realize that it really is a small world after all (sorry, I couldn’t help it!). Here are a few crafts inspired by continents like Africa and Asia, and countries like France and Mexico.

 Around-the-World-Crafts

African Crafts for Kids and Adults

Beautiful Paper BeadsAfrican culture is nothing short of beautiful, and best of all, Africa was where humankind first began. Africa is a collection of unique countries known for their beautiful beads, quilts, and pins. Africans love art, music, and the natural world around them.

  • Beautiful Paper Beads:  These beads are a great way to use up old magazines and protect our planet.
  • Family Love Quilt:  This quilt pattern uses a central panel featuring a touching family scene.
  • Africa Themed Card Set:  An African set of unique stamps creates a collection of beautiful stamped cards.

Asian Design Ideas

Asian Inspired Baby Jacket 1The countries that make up Asia are as vast and beautiful as the continent itself.  Asian cultures value wisdom, hard work, and a bit of imagination, which makes this continent the perfect place to find craft inspiration.

  • Asian Inspired Baby Jacket:  Put those knitting needles to use with this free baby knitting pattern!
  • Asiatic Lily Flower:  For a colorful crochet project create this flower.
  • Asian Inspired Embossing Board Card:  This card has the perfect flair for a unique greeting or theme party invitation.
  • Out of Asia:  Creating this Asian-inspired necklace is easy with plastic and wire mesh.

Mexican Crafts for Kids and Adults

ImageThere’s no place in the world quite like the country of Mexico. From its beautiful holidays like Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) to its fascinating Aztec origins, Mexico is a great place to find inspiration.

  • How to Make a Day of the Dead Shrine:  Learning how to make a shrine for Dia de los Muertos can be a positive experience for remembering the deceased.
  • Day of the Dead Decorative Skull:  This paper mache skull is fun to make, and you will have a great experience as you adorn your skull with colored beads.
  • Day of the Dead Skull Door Decoration:  No matter the occasion, this lovely tribute to Dia de los Muertos will look amazing on your door.
  • Aztec Gold and Blue Planter:  Tribal patterns are all the rage right now, and with summer in full swing, this planter couldn’t be any better.

French Themed Crafts

Must-Make French ChairIt’s no surprise that people flock to France every year for inspiration, whether it be romantic, artistic, or culinary.  These French-inspired crafts are all three!

  • Must-Make French Chair:  Learn how to paint a chair the French way – with lots of style and plenty of flair.
  • Pretty Paper Pomanders:  Always a classic wedding decoration, the name pomander actually comes from the French for a ball of perfume.
  • Strawberry Macaron Flower Pops:  If you want an adorable baby shower recipe that doubles as a decoration, make these macaroon pops.

A little bit of craftiness can go a long way – even to the other side of the world!

Which country would you most like to visit and why?

Pep Up Your Paper Crafting: Polymer Clay Ideas

January 7, 2014 by AllFreePaperCrafts

To celebrate the beginning of another year, make a resolution to master a new crafting technique. For some easy ways to jazz up your paper crafting, check out the polymer clay ideas on AllFreePaperCrafts. No matter what your skill level, you might be surprised to learn how many polymer clay craft ideas are out there. Clay comes in a ton of different colors and styles, so it can be used for almost anything, like borders for homemade cards, frames for photos, embellishments for gifts, and more. Here’s a small sample of polymer clay ideas that I’m especially psyched about this year.

Homemade Card Ideas

Polymer clay embellishments make homemade cards pop. The only limit on these 3D accents is your imagination. Geometric shapes, flowers, and animals are just a few examples of polymer clay craft ideas. Take a look at this gorgeous Crinkle Cutter Clay Tile Card. You’ll have fun marbling the clay and cutting out tiles for this handmade card.

Crinkle Cutter Clay Tile Card

Polymer Clay Craft Ideas

Clay is a great imitator. Because it comes in so many colors and styles, you can mimic almost any material using clay. Take these Rustic Numbered Tags, for instance. They may look like they’re made out of metal, but they’re really a combination of clay, paper, and Mod Podge. You can also keep those family treasures safe with one of our fun and functional polymer clay projects. Add paper and clay embellishments to this Family Secrets Recipe Box and Cards. It’s the perfect gift for the cook in your family.
