Making Friends at CHA with FaveCrafts!

January 24, 2013 by FaveCrafts

For anyone that doesn’t know yet, the Craft and Hobby Association puts together a lovely trade show twice a year where all the craft companies come to sell and show off their newest products to retailers, bloggers, and the press. Lucky for us, Team FaveCrafts get to go every time and take in all the newest trends and products. Unfortunately, we work with tons of companies and bloggers and getting around to seeing everyone can be tough at a huge trade show like CHA. So this year for the 2013 winter show FaveCrafts put together a little get together with the help of some wonderful companies and invited all our favorite bloggers to stop by eat, drink, and chat!

CHA Networking Event

We wanted to give an opportunity for some hard working bloggers to meet some great craft companies and it was a hit! The room was full of delicious food, good chatter, and meeting new faces. Everyone was really excited to be at the event and to have a casual opportunity to meet up and chat.

Prime Publishing, the company that makes FaveCrafts, AllFreeKnitting, AllFreeCrochet, AllFreesewing, and all of our other sites possible was the official host of the event so our president Stuart Hochwert and our Craft Editorial Director/ Director of Social Media / Soon to be Mom Simone Collins gave little speeches thanking everyone for coming because we were so excited to meet with all of them and  get a chance to put a face to an email address. You may recognize (or will soon recognize) a lot of the faces and company names from FaveCrafts.com. It’s amazing how quickly the time flew by!

Finding Our Bliss in Nashville + Swag Bag Giveaway!

February 28, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Have any of you heard of the BlissDom conference before?  If you haven’t, let me quickly fill you in, because it’s awesome!  BlissDom is a conference that’s all about empowering women bloggers.  It’s in its fifth year and has grown to include more than 750 people from all over the country.  This past weekend Kirsten, the editor of AllFreeSewing and I (representing AllFreeHolidayCrafts) had the opportunity to experience BlissDom and we were amazed by all the inspiring people we met.  We got to network with a bunch of amazingly cool craft and food bloggers, learn from successful entrepreneurs like author Jon Acuff and social media guru Melanie Nelson, and have some fun in Nashville!

Since I love pictures, and I know you do too, I thought I’d give you a sneak peek inside our experience at the conference.  First up, the location!

We stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, which is a city unto itself.  Seriously, this hotel had jungle-like plant life, waterfalls and even a boat that floated through the main lobby area:

After getting over the initial shock that this jungle paradise would be our home for the next two days, Kirsten and I started attending sessions where we learned about everything from Facebook to blogging to how to live creatively and believe in yourself. If it sounds very “Oprah,” it was — and in the best way possible. There’s no way you could have left BlissDom without feeling empowered to make positive changes in your life, whether personal or professional or both.

Interspersed with our seminars, we had time to chat with a bunch of other conference attendees. Everyone was so nice and friendly and I was amazed by the amount of creativity and passion packed into one place!  We especially enjoyed making new connections with a few bloggers in particular.  Pop over to these sites if you get a minute – I promise you’ll be glad you did!

  • Maggie from Gussy Sews – A wonderful resource for sewists and anyone who likes cute things!
  • Jennifer from Threaded Together – A blog run by two sisters, their mom, sister-in-law and some friends. They have great craft ideas and tutorials!
  • Allison from House of Hepworths – A great resource for home decor and DIY tutorials; I especially love her Dollar Store section!
  • Angela from Unexpected Elegance – A really cool blog with ideas for upcycled and thrifty home decor.
  • Meggie from Hoosier Farm Babe – A fun blog with delicious recipes inspired by life on the farm.

There were so many amazing women at this conference, I’m just sad we weren’t able to meet all 750 of them!

We did make one more special friend while attending BlissDom.  Are you ready for this?  We met…

The Lorax!  With the upcoming release of the Dr. Seuss inspired movie, this orange mustachioed guy was roaming the halls of the conference, taking pictures with eager fans and we were lucky enough to get to pose with him!  Isn’t he cute?

Stay tuned for more snapshots of our time at BlissDom (trust me, there’s some other special stuff we want to share with you!), but for now I’ll leave you with this: We’re having a special giveaway just for you, our loyal readers!

One lucky reader (chosen at random) will win a swag bag full of fun items we picked up while at BlissDom:

This awesome swag bag includes:

  • A Blooming Expressions flower from Hallmark
  • A “People Like Me” Facebook t-shirt
  • A recipe organizer
  • A fashionable wristlet
  • Shampoo and conditioner from VO5
  • An official “BlissDom” silver necklace
  • A cute breakfast bowl
  • An airplane neck pillow
  • A Blissdom canvas tote bag
  • Coupons
  • And so much more!

How to Enter the Giveaway:

All you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling us where you get your craft inspiration from. It could be a person you know, a blog you read, magazines, your kids… anything really!

The Details:

1. Contest ends on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11:59 p.m.

2. Open to anyone 18+ in US and Canada only.

3. Only one entry per person please.

4. Winner will be announced right here on the blog on Friday, March 2, 2012.

Good luck!

See Your Blog’s Name in Lights

February 24, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Last year we hosted a little competition for bloggers. We asked anyone who has a blog to link to FaveCrafts.com somewhere on their blog–you could write a post about us or add us to your blogroll–and then let us know you’d done so by sending us a link to your blog post or home page. One lucky blogger was selected to get featured in a newsletter, which was seen by thousands of crafters!

We decided to run the contest again this week! Here’s what to do:

  1. Put a link somewhere on your blog that goes to any page on FaveCrafts. You can write a post about us, link to one of our projects, add us to your blogroll, or whatever you’d like.
  2. Let us know you linked to us by entering your link below (if you’re adding us to your sidebar or blogroll, link to your homepage. If you write a post about us, link to that specific post).
  3. You have until February 29, 2012 to get your links in.
  4. Subscribe to our newsletter if you’re not already, and check out our Saturday, March 3rd issue to see who was chosen!

Sewing Bloggers We Met at The Sewing Summit

October 12, 2011 by FaveCrafts

When I went to The Sewing Summit last weekend with Kirsten (editor of AllFreeSewing), we had a great time mingling with the other sewing bloggers and making new friends! One thing we both loved about the summit was the amount of downtime–we were able to make dinner plans with new friends, and there was open sewing in the Baby Lock sewing room at night where people could just hang out and sew. We also got to spend time thrifting with other bloggers. It was a lot more relaxed than other conferences I’d been to! A BIG thanks goes to Amy of Amy’s Creative Side and Erin of Two More Seconds for organizing the whole event.

We didn't take nearly enough pics at the summit, so I borrowed this one from the Sewing Summit Flickr Stream. Here's Amy and Erin giving a little speech to everyone.

On our Friday thrift excursion, we got to know Melissa from I Still Love You–she’s the one who planned the event–Pamela from French Knots, and Jessica from Urban Patchwork (Thanks for driving us around, Jessica!). We shopped till we dropped and then stopped for lunch at a hole-in-the-wall Greek place. It was so much fun to just sit and chat with other crafty ladies.

DI is a popular and ubiquitous thrift store chain in Salt Lake City. We loved it!

That evening there was a fun mixer where we met several people, including Kate from Needle and Spatula. We also met Carol and Susan from Burdastyle, Sunni from A Fashionable Stitch, and Emily from Craftsy. Those girls were so much fun, and they took us out to dinner that night at a really cool Mexican restaurant. Also with us were Lavender from Threadsquare and Suriah from A Maker’s Affair. We had a blast talking about sewing, blogging, and weddings (Congrats to Carol and Suriah who are getting married next June!). Lavender and Suriah met in a Burdastyle sewing club in Boston–if you’ve never heard of their sewing clubs, check it out now!

Lavender wore this amazing dress, which I discovered on her blog was homemade!! I can't get over how talented everyone was! (Photo from Threadsquare)

Then on Saturday we spent most of the day in class. I took Bag Making 101 with Bari J, Garment Making 101 with Jana Nielson of Izzy & Ivy Designs, Tailoring 101 with Gretchen from Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing, and Refashioning with Melissa from I Still Love You. That night we hung out with Melissa and Pamela again at dinner, along with Michelle from Seamingly.

Here's Gretchen teaching in Tailoring 101. Photo borrowed from Kadiddlehopper. Katie was also in the class!

But wait, there’s more! Breakfast and lunch were provided by the conference at the hotel, and attendees were encouraged to mingle and sit with people they didn’t know. We ended up eating with Katie from Kadiddlehopper, Emily from Mommy’s Nap Time, and Amylou from Amylouwho.

What a great weekend! I’m so happy to have met so many cool new sewing bloggers, and I hope to go again next year!

5 Steps To Starting a Free Craft Blog

September 2, 2011 by CreativeIncome

You love to craft and want to share your projects with the world. Why not start a craft blog? It’s super simple to start blogging about your craft with these five easy steps.

  1. Pick a service to use.
There are many free blogging services like Blogger, WordPress, and Yola. They are all relatively simple to use and offer lots of free features like the ability to customize your blog. All of these services allow users to choose a premade layout design, so there is no need to learn code or design your own blog. Each of the services offer different features, so look at each one or ask a blogging friend what they use before you get started.
  2. Create a Banner Header.

You will need to create a header to show off your cool new blog and you can do it yourself. You can use Picnik, Picasa or Gimp which are all free to create your new title header.
  3. Create content for your blog.
This is the most important part of the whole blogging experience. Good content is what attracts and keeps readers. Make sure that you are writing about what you are passionate about and want to continue writing about. If your blog is a mish mosh of your life which includes craft, cooking, parenting, farming, etc. then make sure you let your readers know that either in your title or your description. Sometimes bloggers mix in parts of their life alongside their main focus which is great but if you start a blog called All About Felt and suddenly talk about nothing but milking cows, you will inevitably lose readers. So, keep to what you know and let your readers know what to expect in an About Me or Description Page.
  4. Tell people about your blog.
There is one way to make sure people know you started a blog, tell them. Once you have a couple of posts under your belt, let the world know it. If you use any social media sites like Facebook or Twitter, post all about it. Make sure you let the world know it is your new blog and what the topic is. This increases your chances of people visiting your blog and clicking on the links you add to the social media networks. To make social media even simpler, you can set up an account in TwitterFeed that will create a tweet or facebook update every time you post to your blog. You can also add your blog address to your email signature so that your emails will also be promoting for you.
  5. Work at your blog.
My buddy Jenny likes to say that people need to “rock their baby” when it comes to making their blogs a success and that just means they need love and attention from the blogger. In order to make a blog successful, the first step is to make consistently good content. Which means once you get started blogging, don’t stop. Keep that momentum going and write about what you know and love. Share your projects, tips, and techniques. Posts don’t have to be full tutorials every time, they can be about sharing your inspirations, favorite products, or even a cool new trick. The important part is to keep on blogging once you start.

Welcome to the wonderful world of blogging. It can be a wonderful way to make friends and share what you love. FaveCrafts Heads to the Type-A Parent Conference

July 10, 2011 by FaveCrafts

One of the perks of my job is connecting with bloggers an picking their brains! So you can imagine my excitement when Caitlin (editor of AllFreeKnitting) and I headed to the Type-A Parent Conference. This conference, formally known as the Type-A Mom Conference, took place from June 23-26 at the Renaissance Hotel in the heart of downtown Asheville, North Carolina. For three days, Caitlin and I attended interesting sessions about all things blog-related. We also met some amazingly Internet-savvy women (and men).

Our experience taught us so much about engaging bloggers and working with brands. Here’s a peek behind the scenes:

When we arrived at the conference, we were given a “swag bag” filled with products from the events’ sponsors. We received a box of Who Nu? cookies (delicious, by the way), a book from the Boy Scouts of America and discounted tickets to the historic Biltmore house.

My badge on the first day. It was time to get the conference started!

Caitlin and I attended a session called “Blogger Outreach That Works.” This is a picture of the Blogger Bill of Rights, which was created by session leaders, Cecily Kellog (@cecilyk), Jessi Langsen (@tokissthecook), Ana Roco-Castro (@anarc) and Jenn Fowler (@jennfowler). We learned so much about pitching to bloggers, reaching out to brands and the importance of communicating.

The keynote address on Saturday morning was given by Patti Digh (@pattidigh). Patti’s talk was called “Blog as a Verb” and it was all about finding your voice and owning what you have to say. The point that I found most important was giving up the need to be right all of the time – this will distort your message and lead to self-doubt. Caitlin and I loved Patti’s message so much, we each bought her book Four Word Self Help for our moms as a souvenir.

Here are some crafty bloggers we had the pleasure of meeting. Be sure to check them out!

  1. Catherine at Evolving Mommy
  2. Kim at Crafty Mama of 4
  3. Tonya at Create-Celebrate-Explore
  4. Sarah at Real Life Blog
  5. Alicia at Making Time for Mommy

How do you connect with other crafters?

Meet and Make: Candace Jedrowicz

June 17, 2011 by FaveCrafts

Today’s Meet and Make designer is Candace Jedrowicz. Candace is a mixed media artist who teaches art techniques and works as a muse for Cool2Craft. She blogs at Spirit Clay, and you can see many of her project tutorials on FaveCrafts as well.

Ready to meet Candace?

10 Fun Facts About Candace Jedrowicz

  1. I’m a Halloween nut.
  2. I’m tickled about things that look like food, but aren’t and things that look like they’re not food, but are.
  3. I like to breathe in the colors of a sunset.
  4. I have a glue collection.
  5. I tie dye all my white undies.
  6. I can make a Tibetan singing bowl sing.
  7. I love coffee and tea cups in art.
  8. I’ve meditated in the Great Pyramid.
  9. I love waking up before dawn.
  10. I can tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue.

Here’s Candace’s Project:

The Tempered Empress Chocolate Box

Materials:

  • Empty chocolate box (start eating!)
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue
  • Sponge brush
  • Any metallic rubbing compound like Rub N Buff
  • Brown and dark brown polymer clay
  • Chocolate paper cups
  • Pasta machine or rolling pin
  • Tissue blade or craft knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Red marking pen or red acrylic paint
  • Variety of gems, earring parts, letter brads, etc.
  • Wide wired ribbon
  • Focal photo for the lid
  • Candle and matches
  • Paper towel and/or wet wipes
  • Optional – Polymer Clay Chocolate Hump Molds for molding your chocolates available at the Cool2Craft Marketplace

Instructions:

  1. My box had a bow on the front, so I removed it. Next, I transformed the box lid with the Aleene’s Burnt Brown Bag technique. If you are not familiar with this technique CLICK HERE to watch a video demo by Heidi Borchers.
  2. After you use a paper towel or wet wipe to clean off the soot, it should look similar to this.
  3. I used copper and green metallic paste, skimming the surface and touching the highlights.
  4. I used a Tarot card – The Empress – as the focal point for the lid. I’m appreciating her archetypal symbolism. I “aged” the card with sandpaper and a copper stamp pad. As an artist, I aged myself the same way! =0) This rich and sparkly ribbon was the perfect accent to the image. If you are creating a self portrait, use an image that resonates with you.   It could be a photo of you, or something from a magazine, etc.
  5. Paint the box base with red acrylic or marker.  Or finish it in whatever finish you like. I loved the velvety look of the marker! I used these polymer clay hump molds to get consistently shaped chocolate pieces.  You can make your own or purchase mine at the Cool2Craft Marketplace. Put enough chocolate papers in to fill the box.  That’s how many chocolate pieces you’ll need to make.
  6. Roll out a chunk of polymer clay large enough to cover the hump mold about 1/8″ thick.  Put a tissue or piece of tissue paper over the hump mold (so it will release easily) and lay the rolled out clay over it. Gently stretch the clay down over the mold until it touches your work surface.  Cut away the excess clay and remove it carefully.  Hold the shape as you would hold a cracked robin’s egg – very carefully.  Continue to trim the clay until it looks just right.  The very bottom does not need to be perfect.  Set the piece in a chocolate cup to test the look.
  7. The square and rectangle shapes will work best if you miter the corners.  Use a tissue blade or craft knife to cut a small triangle from each corner.  Put the new edges together and blend carefully.
  8. I used a cookie cutter to create the heart shaped chocolate.  You could use any shape at all. Cut the top and then cut a strip to wrap around the inside of the cutter to shape the chocolate walls.  Remove the strip from the cutter and put the top on. Gently blend the top edges over the sides. Bake the clay according to the directions.
  9. Brush the chocolates with a satin finish sealer if desired.
  10. Glue the chocolate shapes in their cups and move them around in the box until they look just right.  Use the hot glue gun to secure them in place. I used the glue gun to secure the ribbon ends under the lid, as well. Use every surface of the box that will be visible in the finished piece.
