Link Love: Super Sweet Candy Corn Crafts

October 4, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Fall is great for a lot of reasons but if you have a sweet tooth, it’s absolutely killer (in a good way). Candy corn is one of my absolute favorite treats and and now is the time when you can’t go to the grocery store without grabbing a bag. In fact, some of my favorite autumn memories involve those sugary little orange, yellow and white candy triangles. This seasonal delight only comes out during the fall season, so it’s no surpise that crafters are celebrating its return with some candy corn-themed crafts.

If you’re looking for crafty ideas, look no further than that orange bag in your cabinet. Use actual candy to create Candy Corn Earrings. Colorful beads turn this into a pretty jewelry craft that anyone can wear. You can wear your handmade earrings before and after Halloween because, let’s face it, candy corn is a hit all year long. Also, Halloween costumes for kids can get expensive, so stay home instead and create a Sugary Sweet Candy Corn Costume for your favorite little one.

A bowl of candy corn always seems to disappear within minutes of a party, so accent your space with some sweet decor crafts that are sure to last all night long. Fill a Candy Corn Bowl with treats for a festive touch of color this Halloween. This is also a great bowl option when handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. While you’re at it, stick a few Candy Corn Friends on your table and take your party to the next level.

Treat yourself to a crafty afternoon and rediscover your love of all things autumn. Make a few candy corn-inspired crafts this season – your dentist will surely thank you for it later.

How to Make Faux Fall Leaves

September 30, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Hello FaveCrafts readers, my name is Latrice Murphy. Today I have a fun fall tutorial to share with you on how to create faux leaves with stamps, embossing powder and ink. It’s a fun technique that I’ve used in both my card making and on scrapbook pages. Let’s get to it.

Materials:

  • Cardstock: Hero Arts
  • Patterned Paper: Crate Paper Farmhouse
  • White cardstock: Neenah
  • Inks: Wild Honey, Antique Linen and Gathered Twigs (Ranger) Versamark (Tsukineko)
  • Embossing powder: Ranger
  • Shimmer Spray: Tattered Angels
  • 3D adhesive: EK Success
  • Circle cutter of your choice

First you want to stamp and emboss your leaf image in either black, copper or clear embossing powder. This part is up to you. This is what each one those would look like. You can also simply stamp it with ink. I love the texture the embossing gives the leaf.

Next grab some fall colors from your ink pile. My favorite are the Tim Holtz and Ranger Distress inks. I used Gathered Twigs, Barn Door and Wild Honey.

Next add your colors with the applicator. Don’t worry about blending them at this point. Just make sure they are covered completely with a good mix of the three.

To finish the leaves off you’ll spray them with either plain water or a shimmer mist of your choice. This will blend the colors even more and add shimmer too. I created a simple card using this technique. On my leaf I tapped the back of the paper to get most of the embossing powder off so that the texture was subtle. I cut my leaf out with some precision scissors and curled the tips for dimension.

How to Make a Card Using Faux Leaves:

  1. Make your card from Hero Arts Layering Papers. I chose a yellow.
  2. Using a circle cutter cut two circles of the same size from patterned paper.
  3. Cut a third circle from white cardstock a little larger.
  4. Ink the edges of the patterned paper circles and adhere to card. Trim excess off.
  5. Ink the third circle with Antique linen and Gathered Twigs Distress Inks and adhere to center of card.
  6. To create the leaf, stamp the leaf image in Versamark, emboss with black and ink with Wild Honey, Fired Brick and Gathered Twigs Distress Inks.
  7. Heat set Inks and spritz with shimmer spray of your choice.
  8. Cut leaf out, curl edges with a bone folder and adhere to center circle.
  9. Create a banner from white cardstock, ink edges, stamp sentiment in brown and adhere using both dry adhesive and 3D dots.

Thanks so much for stopping by and reading my tutorial. I hope that you try this today and whip up some fun and fabulous cards or projects with your created faux leaves.

How to Decorate Flameless Candles + Pumpkinpalooza Contest!

September 26, 2012 by FaveCrafts

To celebrate our Pumpkinpalooza contest, we’re bringing you the best flameless candle and pumpkin projects from all of our crafty friends! Scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out how you can win $1000 in cash and prizes just by decorating a pumpkin!

This post comes from Angie of The Country Chic Cottage.
Learn more about Angie and check out all of her projects on AllFreeHolidayCrafts.

Fall is a wonderful time to seasonally decorate your home.  Bring fall colors into any room in your home with these decorative fall candles.  Three super simple methods for adding some fall colors to candles for your home’s decor or your Thanksgiving table.

Choosing flameless candles for this project is important because some of the components on the decorations are flammable.  Energizer makes a great battery operated candle that is real wax and scented.  Your guests will never know that you are not burning the real thing.

These candles can even be operated on a timer so you don’t even have to worry about leaving them on.

For the first decorative candle, you will need:

  • Jute twine
  • Small pieces of Indian corn (Note:  The corn used here is real but I am sure there are fake versions at your local craft supply store.)
  • Energizer flameless candle (Note:  The corn stalks can be very flammable.  The flameless candle is very important.)

1.  Begin by cutting a long piece of twine and wrapping it around your candle a few times.

2. Tie your Indian corn on tightly to the candle.

3.  Our first decorative candle is complete and in under 5 minutes.

For the next version, you will need:

  • Fake gourds (These can be found at the dollar or craft supply store.)
  • Small screwdriver
  • Jute twine
  • Energizer flameless candle

1.  Using a small screwdriver, you can poke a hole right in the top of the gourd.

2.  Thread with jute twine.

3.  Then tie onto another candle and your second decorative candle is complete.

Now for our final decorative candle idea, you will need:

  • Jute chair webbing (The version shown is trimmed in red.  You can find this at Walmart or a craft supply store generally with your by the yard trim.)
  • Small wooden cutout (This version already had holes on both ends.  If needed, add holes to your cutout with a small drill or heavy duty hole punch before painting.)
  • Craft paint in desired color
  • Paint brush
  • Jute twine
  • Stamps
  • Ink
  • Energizer flameless candle

1.  Paint the cutout in a deep dark red and allow to dry.  Gather stamps and white ink to spell happy fall .

2.  Stamp the letters directly onto the wooden cutout and allow the ink to dry.

3.  Thread jute twine through the wooden cutout.  Wrap candle with jute webbing then secure by tying your wooden cutout around the candle.

Flip the switches on your candles and enjoy the glow!  These candles really do look just like the real thing.  Fool your friends and family while still enjoying the scents of the season with these candles from Energizer.

Decorate your candles with one, two, or all three of these methods for a festive holiday display.

Link Love: Fall Leaf Crafts

September 13, 2012 by FaveCrafts

It’s mid-September and all signs are pointing to fall. I have mixed feelings about this seasonal change, mostly because I cherish those long, lazy summer evenings. It’s okay though, because I can now look forward to all of  the pretty colors in nature. During the summer, the trees are a bright green but come autumn, the leaves begin to fall and the ground is blanketed with beautiful, colorful leaves that crunch under your feet. It’s time to embrace this new season and make crafts that emphasize the beauty of autumn. This fall, wear leaves on your clothes, hang them in your home or incorporate them in your gifts.

You can gather leaves for a variety of projects or simply use materials such as felt, paper or leather to create your own. Be sure to include muted red, burnt oranges and soft yellows in your projects!

What’s great about fall crafts that incorporate leaves is that they can be tailored to fit all skill levels. If you have kids, use fun products like shaving cream to make your own leaves. Better yet, add some sparkle to your space with some Prized Pumpkins. This is a great opportunity to bond as a family and teach them about the changing seasons. Plus, you can display the finished project all season long.

If you need a little time to yourself, make a more complicated project such as the Apple and Pineapple Wreath. This elegant and simple home decor craft looks great on your door or hung over your mantel. Because this project utilizes spray paint and pins, it’s better if older crafters give it a whirl. If you love to hang wreath in the fall, consider any of these 19 Decorative Front Door Wreaths – it’s a great way to greet guests.

Sure, it’s sad that summer is over. The upside is that you can now change the way you look at crafts and celebrate all the great aspects of fall. Embrace the wonderful aspects of the season and add a few leaves to your next craft project.

Have a Stylish Autumn: Jewelry and Sewing Patterns for Fall

September 9, 2012 by FaveCrafts

I am absolutely PUMPED for fall! This heat can take a hike. Let the autumn breeze blow all that hot air away. I’m ready for a nice, cool season of falling leaves and apple cider and cute fall fashion…

Fashion. That has to be the best part of fall. Okay, one of the best parts, because there really are so many wonderful things about this season. So I picked out some of our best autumn jewelry and sewing projects for fall. These are for YOU. Because you deserve to look cute.

Isn’t the Dyed Pumpkin Seed Necklace clever? I never would have thought of making beads from pumpkin seeds (Hey, that rhymes!). Dyeing the seeds adds nice autumn hues to this unique necklace.

And how cute is this Infinity Scarf?! The best part is that it’s upcycled; you don’t even have to buy anything! Talk about free–doesn’t cost you anything to make, and the pattern is free. Just find an old sweater of yours and refashion it to make something new.

Cascading Autumn Arbor Necklace Antrhopologie Sweater HeadbandFringe Leather Leaf Necklace
Cozy Fall Poncho Shades of Autumn Bracelet Sweater Into Infinity Scarf Tutorial
Simple Cluster Earrings Adorable DIY Ear Warmers DIY Fabric Trim Earrings and Choker
Sweater Leg Warmers Dyed Pumpkin Seed Necklace Sweater Vest With Faux Fur Makeover

Crunchy leaves, juicy apples, pumpkin pie….that’s what the Shades of Autumn Bracelet reminds me of. There are so many different colors and shapes of leaves. With different shaped pearls, no two bracelets will ever be alike.  This bracelet mimics this fall season in more ways than one.

I remember a few years back walking through an apple orchard with my friends. We were only wearing sweatshirts and jeans and it was quite cold out. Maybe this year I’ll wear some Sweater Leg Warmers (another upcycle project!) or the Anthropologie Sweater Hairband. The leg warmers would definitely keep the wind from cutting right through my jeans. And of course, the sweater hairband would be warm, and look super cute at the same time too.

I can’t wait!

What is your favorite part of autumn?

Link Love: Wreaths You’ll Fall in Love With!

August 16, 2012 by FaveCrafts

Even though there are still a few days of summer left, there’s no denying that autumn is approaching.  There’s a chill in the air, the rainy days have returned, and most importantly, the stores are stocking up on Halloween candy!

One of my favorite things about fall is decorating for the season.  I love the warm colors and the smell of fresh cinnamon, clove, pine, and fire.  When it comes to fall decorations, a great place to start is creating a seasonal wreath.  Since visitors are in abundance during the fall, having a beautiful wreath on your door is a great way to greet family and friends for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

I love this Circle of Autumn Wreath.  This is a project that truly sparkles and it looks easy and fun to make.  I love how the leaves look with that fun and snazzy glitter coat.

I’m also a big fan of using recycled materials, so I was sure to bookmark this Pretty Paper Wreath when I saw it.  What this wreath lacks in color, it makes up for in design.  You could also use newspaper to achieve a similar look, or cut up an old paper bag if you want it to look like burlap.

Finally, this Colorful Fall Wreath is perfect for the thrifty crafter.  You could easily make this wreath out of items you’d find at the dollar store, so you can get the look you love for pennies on the dollar.  That’s my kind of crafting!

Want more fall wreath ideas?  Check out our collection of 19 Decorative Front Door Wreaths for Fall!

We’re not the only ones who are ready to start decorating with leaves and pumpkins.  Here are a few other fall wreaths from bloggers all over the Web.

  1. Fall Wreath with Burlap from Sweet Passions on a Thrifty Dime
  2. Fall Pom Pom Wreath from Nature’s Heirloom
  3. Fall Rag Wreath from Cassie & Co.
  4. Free Spirit Fall Wreath from Positively Spendid

  6. Fall Wreath from Every Creative Endeavor
  7. Yarn Wreath from Home Stories A to Z
