One way to cut down on the waste cluttering our planet is to use what you already have in your house or that you can easily get, but you also don’t have to fill your house with old things. Upcycled crafts are the perfect way to renew and reuse things that you might think are out of style or useless. Giving a used item a makeover is a fun way to exercise your creativity, save some money, and show respect for our planet. Today, FaveCraft.com’s celebration of our lovely blue planet continues with another innovative, Earth-friendly craft.

Day three of Earth Week brings us to a fantastic tutorial involving a chair. Nicole from Darn Good Yarn walks us through the surprisingly easy process of giving an old chair a new look. With a couple of simple materials you can create a fun and funky chair for your household.
Refurbish An Old Chair With Yarn
Materials:
- 4.5 skeins of 4-ply Sari Ribbon Rope
- 1 Reclaimed Silk Scarf
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions:
1. Cut the yarn into strips and tie them where you want them. For my chair, I wrapped the yarn around the chair legs and tied them, then tacked it down with a dab of glue.
2. I popped off the seat cushion and reupholstered it with one of my Reclaimed Silk Scarves. You can also re-foam the chair if you need to.
Thanks again to Nicole from Darn Good Yarn for allowing us to share this tutorial!

I like the first ladies’ comment about “rescueing an old chair from a garage sale for $2 and plan to glue it back together and paint and varnish it for use outdoors. These are popular as silent auction items.” I need to buy some of these type of chairs. Looks like an easy and cheap project (the kind I love).
I love how colorful this yarn is. Great idea with the hair!
I like to use empty cans to make cookie cutters
Such beautiful yarn. I love to upcycle boxes into all kinds of things, from turning into storage containers, gift packages, doll houses…
My grandsons and I have used empty 1 gallon milk bottles, cut some holes, added some dead branches and seed to create friendly bird feeders for our side yard garden area. The birds love them and the branches make the feeders more “friendly” as they eat. We have attracted sparrow, finches, cardinals, robins, and even a red headed woodpecker!
I’ve gotten scarfs from the thrift store 99 cents or less and wash them and take them apart some great wool ones and recrocheted them in to slippers and baby things for my granddaughter the saving of buying wool this way is great one scarf cost 89 cents and I’ve seen the same wool go for 35 dollars a Skein and there were 3 skeins in this one scarf so score I would love to win this one thank you !
Cute idea; but, may be a little too colorful for me!
Pet beds, it uses fabric bits, old jeans and ugly fabric….plus animals get a comfy treat.
My favourite way to upcycle is making bags from old t-shirts: cut off the sleeves, sew the bottom closed.. good to go or add a sleeve “pocket” on the inside for your keys..
Would love to win some recycled sari silk ribbon. I know I would be getting out my large crochet hook and hook up a floor mat. I have used other materials to make floor mats with such as old sheets and t shirts.
I’ve been making bracelets from the pop tops of soda cans. I also plan to make a travel art case from old DVD cases.
hope i win
I really would like to knit or to hook a special hand-bag with the Recycled Multicolore Sari Silk Ribbon ! : )
I recycle plastic bags by cutting them in strips and making cell phone cases or crochet hook holder.
I love to use natural yarns and the colors of this yarn are beautiful!
Lately my favorite thing to upcycle is neckties. I have been making a ton of wristlets and wallets for people I know using their husbands and sons old neck ties. I also love to upcycle my old t-shirts into workout tank tops. After I get enough neckties I am going to try one of the bed spreads that I had seen with them.
I love to upcyccle clothes, buttons, zippers, and broken jewelry and turn them into memory quilts.
old denims into coverlets, repurposed plastic bags into a plastic ‘fabric’ (several fused layers) for very durable totes
I paint or decorate empty glass jars and use as vases, then in giving flowers to Senior Adults.
I like painting empty jars that tomato gravy or other foods come in. Some of them are quite lovely. I just give them a good wash in the dishwasher and remove all of the label. Then I paint them and use as vases and such.
I use old denim shorts to repair my long denim pants so they can be worn again without just throwing them away. I also find different size shells and varius color shells on the beach and make decorative shells by gluing them onto a large conch shell and giving them for gifts.
I have a couple of my favorite skirts that no longer fit so I am going to make an outfit for each of my granddaughter’s.
My current upcyle project is making paper out of lint from the dryer. I will be making a Mother’s Day card. This time I am going to try dying the lint with tea bags and adding some dried flowers and leaves. The ribbon yarn would make a nice edging.
My youngest daughter is grown now, but I have saved a few of her favorite dresses and using one now to make her a heart shaped pillow and with some of the scraps I will cover a frame and put a picture of her wearing the dress in it!!!!! Love your chair idea <3
I crochet worn out denim into rugs for any room.
i use old sheets, curtains and shirts to make pet beds for my vet clinic, i stuff the beds with the shirt remainders, nothing wasted!
I save scraps of everything….yarn, material, buttons, popsicle sticks, etc. and let the grandkids go crazy with their artistic imagination!
i have never seen anything like that before and would never think of anything like that before but i think its so different and awesome
I save every last bit of yarn tails and use them in a felted project later.
I love the yarn! It reminds me of the circus. 🙂
The colors are fabulous!
I would love to see what I could come up with using this yarn.
What great yarn for throw pillows!
I like to turn old jeans into purses. This yarn would make great trim on some.
I save buttons from worn clothing to use on new projects.
I recycle glass jars and boxes for storage containers.
I use a lot of recycled denim in my projects – I think as of now I’ve made (and sold) over 30 jackets using it.
I love this idea, and have the perfect chair to do it to, it’s right behind me. Hope I win.
I enjoy making paper beads and making necklace. I have many comments on my necklaces and I always enjoy their amazement when I tell them it is paper.
I like to take old worn out chairs and paint them different colors, my mother has three around the dining room table.
