Project of the Day: Little Treasure Card

March 10, 2012 by FaveCrafts 66 Comments

Today’s project is for anyone welcoming a new baby into the world! Whether you’re a proud parent announcing the new arrival or a friend or family member sending your congratulations, celebrate the event with a handmade card. With the project of the day, you’ll learn how to make an adorable card that you can bring to a baby shower or send to a new parent. The Little Treasure Card from Graphic 45 is a sweet project that incorporates pretty yellow and blue scrapbook paper and vintage stamps featuring small children. Layering different pieces of cardstock and chipboard gives this card a sophisticated three-dimensional effect. Thanks to Jane Tregenza for bringing us this project!

Little Treasure Card

The papers in this card come from Graphic 45’s precious Little Darlings collection. The vintage stamps from the New Arrival papers serve as a focal point for this card, and they have an old-fashioned charm that can only be described as angelic. Make this card for the next “little treasure” in your life!

Little Treasure Card

Supplies:

Little Darlings Collection Print Paper:

  • Cherished #G4500450
  • Baby Borders #G4500453
  • New Arrival #G4500448
  • Little Darlings #G4500442
  • Rock-A-Bye #G4500447
  • Chipboard Words
  • Bazzill Cardstock in Yellow and Blue
  • Glue or Other Adhesive
  • Scissors
  • Spellbinders Die Cutting Machine
  • Spellbinders Scalloped Oval Dies
  • Foam Tape

Instructions:

Your card will be 6 inches x 6 inches, so if you don’t have an envelope to fit, then just change the measurements to fit your envelope.

Cut a piece of cardstock 6inches x 12 inches and fold it in half.

For your cover:

1.  Cut a piece of Rock-A-Bye paper 5-3/4 inches wide and 4 inches high. Ink around the edges and adhere it to the front of your card near the top.

2.  Cut a piece of Cherish 5-3/4 inches wide and 1-3/4 inches high. This piece is for the bottom of the front of the card. Ink around the piece of paper it and adhere it to your card.

3.  Cut a piece of blue cardstock 4-5/8 inches wide and 1-/34 inches high. Cut a piece of yellow cardstock 4-7/16 inches wide and 1-5/8 inches high, ink it, and adhere it to the blue piece.

4.  Cut four squares from New Arrival print paper, ink around the edges, and adhere to the middle of the Bazzill cardstock. Adhere it to the front of your card over the join of your two print papers.

5.  Cut a scalloped oval of New Arrival using a spellbinder die, and ink around the edges. Cut a smaller oval in yellow Bazzill cardstock, and ink around the edges. Tape the two ovals together and add a little chipboard word. Add it to the front of your card with foam tape.

For the inside of your card:

1.  Choose one of the prints (I used the check side of New Arrival), cut it to 6 inches x 11 inches, ink around the edges, and fold in half.

2.  Cut another print paper (I used the music side of Little Darlings), cut it to 6 inches x 10 inches, ink around the edges, and fold in half. On the left side of the fold and in the middle, add a square Rock-A-Bye print paper 3 inches wide x 3-1/2 inches high.

3.  From the Baby Borders sheet, choose two borders, cut them to 9 inches long, and mount them on cardstock with a small amount of Bazzill cardstock showing on each side. Fold them in half.

4.  Cut a piece of yellow cardstock 2-1/2 inches high x 9 inches long. Ink around the edges, and fold in half.

5.  Cut a piece of the polka dot side of Rock-A-Bye to 2-1/2 inches x 4-1/2 inches and adhere it to the right side of the fold in the cardstock.

6. Cut a piece of New Arrival 2 stamps wide and 4 stamps high, ink it around the edges, and adhere it to the left side of the fold.

7.  Cut a piece of blue cardstock 1-1/8 inches high x 8-1/2 inches long, ink around the edges, and fold in half.

8.  Cut a “little darling” phrase from Baby Borders and adhere it to the left of the fold.

9.  Cut a piece of the polka dot side of Rock-A-Bye and 2-3/4 inches x 3-3/4 inches, ink around the edges, and tape it to the middle of your cardstock.

10.  Add a smaller piece of yellow cardstock 2 inches wide x 3inches high. This will let you add a personal message or photo.

11.  Wrap a piece of organza ribbon around the square and tie with a bow at the front. Now you are ready to put it all together!

Putting it all together:

We are going to layer all the bits and pieces on top of each other inside your card. Every piece is only attached along the sides of your card.

By now you will have noticed that each layer is slightly smaller than the other. This gives the card its pop effect. For this reason, each layer can only be attached along the sides for it to work.

1.  Add some tape along the edge of your 6 x 11 piece of print paper. Adhere it to the edge of your card only along the sides. Add some tape along the edges of your 6 x 10 print paper and adhere it along the edge of your card only on the sides.

2.  Add one of your borders to the top of your card. Adhere it along the edges of your card. Add another border to the bottom of your card, only along the sides.

3.  Add the yellow cardstock strip in the middle of the two borders, only with tape along the edges. Over the top of the yellow and in the middle, add your narrow blue strip. Remember to only attach it along the sides of your card.

For a shower present I take the small metal boxes that candy comes in (can’t remember the name of the candy) and decorate it with the babies name, BD, etc. Inside the box I put a long strip that is folded to fit in the box. Each “page” is marked for first step, first word, etc. It makes a small, compact baby book.
