Today I’m really excited to share our Project of the Day from our friends at Caron International Yarns. This granny square blanket evokes sunshine and springtime! The colors aren’t bright and in your face; instead, their understand, muted and simple. That’s not to say this design is boring. In fact, it’s sure to keep you busy all season long!

Past Perfect Mitered Granny Throw

Create 56 granny square motifs and stitch the pieces together to create the wonderful throw.



Materials:

  • Waverly for Bernat (100 g/3.5 oz)
  • 55280 Celadon 2 ball(s)
  • 55415 Princess 2 ball(s)
  • 55140 Beautiful Blue 4 ball(s)
  • 55148 Breath of Blue 5 ball(s)
  • 5mm (U.S. H/8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Measurements (approx.):

  • Width – 46.5 ” [118 cm]
  • Length – 53 ” [134.5 cm]

Gauge:

  • Motif = 6.5″ [16.5 cm] square.

 

Blanket Instructions:

MOTIF (make 56).

  • Note: Ch 3 at beg of row, counts as dc throughout.
  • With A, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring.
  • 1st rnd: (RS). Ch 3. 2 dc in ring. (Ch 2. 3 dc in ring) 3 times. Ch 2. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
  • 2nd rnd: Sl st in each of next 2 dc and next ch-2 sp. Ch 3. (2 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in same sp. Ch 1. *(3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1. Rep from * twice more. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Break A.
  • Beg working in rows as follows:
  • 3rd row: Join B in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3. 2 dc in same sp. Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-2 sp. Turn.
  • 4th row: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1). (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) twice. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1. (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) twice. 1 dc in top of ch 3. Break B.
  • 5th row: Join C in first ch-1 sp. Ch 3. 2 dc in same sp. (Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice. Ch 1. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. (Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times. Turn.
  • 6th row: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1). (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) 3 times. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1. (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) 3 times. 1 dc in top of beg ch 3. Break C.
  • 7th row: Join D in first ch-1 sp. Ch 3. 2 dc in same sp. (Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times. Ch 1. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. (Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times. Turn.
  • 8th row: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1). (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) 4 times. (3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1. (3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1) 4 times. 1 dc in top of ch 3. Fasten off.

Finishing:

Join Motifs following diagram.

Edging:

  • 1st rnd: (RS). Join C in bottom right corner sp. Ch 1. 3 sc in same sp. *1 sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp to next corner. 3 sc in corner. Rep from * twice more. Work 20 sc along next Motif. (Work 21 sc along next Motif) 6 times. Work 20 sc along last Motif. Join D to first sc.
  • 2nd rnd: With D, ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. *Ch 3. Miss corner sc. 1 sc in each sc to next 3 sc corner group.** 1 sc in first sc of next 3 sc group. Rep from * around, ending at **.
  • Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

    I have always wanted to learn to tat. The lace is so pretty. I also heard that its very hard to learn. Love this “granny” blanket btw.

    Crochet a sweater, cardigan, or tunic. I think it would be fun to wear something i made besides a hat or scarf.

    my granma made tatted lace, gorgeous lace and though she taught me knitting, crocheting and embroidery, she never taught me tatting … i’ve tried, but need some extra help to get the hang of it. someday!

    I’ve always wanted to try spinning wool into yarn. There is always an exhibit at the state fair and the ladies seem so relaxed. They show you how to do it with a drop spindle, but the spinning wheels are just fascinating, and a bit hypnotic.

    Tatting! It’s almost a lost art and requires such patience (I think), seems like the concentration required would be almost meditation.
