Last summer, I was thrilled at the prospect of driving my young niece and nephew across Tennessee to visit family. I pictured the three of us flying down the interstate, windows down and wind in our hair as we rocked out to Disney tunes. I didn’t bring any kids crafts like I usually do when I hang out with them, but I thought they would be fine.
Little did I know how wrong I was.
If I had only packed some sort of travel activities or games for the car, I would have been fine, but all I had was my iPod and a few snacks.
One hour into the trip, as we were listening to the soundtrack of Oliver & Company, my little three-year-old niece said, “Can we listen to Beauty and the Beast next?” I browsed my Disney playlist, dismayed to find a decided lack of Beauty and the Beast music. “Sorry, hon, I don’t have that soundtrack.” I should have foreseen the impending disaster when my nephew rolled his eyes dramatically. “Here it comes,” he groaned.
My niece promptly burst into tears with a shriek of “I WANT BEAUTY AND THE BEEEEEAST!” After the first shout, she repeated the battle cry. Again. And again. And again.
I will never travel without the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack again. I tried apologies, promises, admonitions, different music, pleas for mercy, fruit snacks, impromptu car games for kids—nothing seemed to calm her. Hours later, the little girl’s roar had diminished neither in ferocity or volume, and my head throbbed from the noise.
Don’t be like me.
