Since my first home ec class in 8th grade, I have had a love of sewing. I clearly remember my first “real” project which I made from bright yellow fabric. The pattern included rows of straight darts down the front on which I added embroidered white daisies. It was on that project that I also made my first sewing mistake when I didn’t understand that you had to match the notches in order to put the right sleeve on the right side. So, I sewed my first sleeves in backwards. My next lesson was in ripping out a seam. Once I fixed those switched sleeves, I remember being so proud of my first sewing achievement. I don’t have a photo of that first project but by the following year, I sewed my 9th grade graduation dress. Apparently yellow was my very favorite color for several years! I was quite intrigued with the fabric for this dress which again featured embroidery. It was the most expensive fabric I had ever purchased. As the years went by, I continued to sew all my clothes through high school and the last big sewing project I remember making was my prom dress.
Since September is National Craft Month, thought I would check out the selection of sewing projects a FaveCrafts this week. What I found was that the editors have assembled 21 Free Sewing Patterns, plus sewing tips, an essential sewing tools list and a sewing dictionary right on one page. Since I’ve mainly done just craft sewing recently, it was great to read through these refresher tips. You’ll also find links to instructions for pincushions, pillows, bags, clothing and home décor. My pick from this collection is the absolutely adorable Felt Donut Pin Cushion created by Stacy Schlyer. It looks good enough to eat and Stacy even added sugar cookie fragrance to the stuffing! Happy sewing!
