How To: Make a Christmas Flower Bouquet

December 22, 2011 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts 2 Comments

Well, the official countdown has begun …only a mere 3 days until Christmas!  Hopefully all your gifts have been purchased and the fun process of wrapping has begun!

While I actually enjoy wrapping gifts, I find paper scraps terribly annoying.  No matter what I’m wrapping, the scraps are just never big enough to wrap another gift…so what is a girl to do?

Why, she’s to craft, of course!

Turn those leftover wrapping paper scraps into a beautiful Christmas Flower Bouquet!  These paper flowers are also great for adding flair to your holiday packages or dimension to your Christmas tree.  Sometimes I stick these flowers in a wreath or on top of my tree.  It looks stunning (if you do this, try using nicer paper.  I used scrapbook paper to make the ones in my tree, but if you have good quality wrapping paper, go for it

Want to make some of your own?  Gather up those wrapping paper scraps…

Materials:

  • Variety of paper scraps, it could be wrapping paper like I used here, or any decorative paper you’d like
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun or tape
  • Pipe cleaners (optional)

Step One:  Cutting out perfect paper squares

To make perfect squares, lay your paper flat with the wrong side facing you.  Fold the bottom corner upwards until the bottom edge is lined up with the side edge.  You should have a perfect triangle, with some paper left over.

Cut off the extra paper so you just have a triangle.  Leave folded with the crease facing you.

Step Two:  Creating wings

Fold the left and right corners up to the top corner, so you have a diamond shape.

Take the right flap and fold it so the middle crease lines up with the outer crease.  Repeat with the left flap.

Step Three:  Folding out the pockets

Step two created two pockets, one on the right side, one on the left.  Unfold the right wing and open the pocket.

Push the pocket down so it looks like a kite.  Repeat on the left side.

Step Four:  Making the center of the pedal

Take the tip of the right “kite” and fold it down to the center.  Repeat on the left side.

Fold both “kites” along their middle crease, so the outer crease meets up with the inner one.

Step Five:  Finishing the pedal

Place a tiny bit of glue or tape on left wing and join it to the right wing.  Now you have one pedal!  Repeat steps 1-5 four more times, so you have 5 pedals total.

Step Six:  Assembly

Place a tiny bit of glue or tape on one pedal and begin gluing them together.  Stick the first and the last petal together so you have a round flower.  If you like, you can insert a pipe cleaner into the flower to create a stem.

If you’d like your flowers to be more decorative, try making this Folded Flower Ball Ornament to hang from your mantel or in your tree.  You can also make a Crepe Paper Rose Bouquet with leftover tissue paper!  If you have paper of a similar color, you can make Paper Rosette Trees, which would look striking on your mantel or holiday table.

Any other ideas on how to use up those wrapping paper scraps?  Please do tell!

Certain crafts just need an accompanying video, don’t you think? Especially things like crochet stitches, knitting stitches, and sewing techniques–it’s so much easier to crochet a sweater pattern when you’ve got videos teaching you how to do each stitch. I’m a very visual learner, as I suspect many crafters are, which is why we have […]
