Friendship Bracelet Frenzy

I just returned from a week long trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where I counseled a cabin of high school girls at sleepaway camp. The week was exhausting but pretty incredible none the less. I’ll admit, I’m a bit out of touch with what it was like to be a high schooler, with the stress of boys and college preparations a thing of the past. One thing that I resonated with, however, is the meaning of a heartfelt friendship bracelet! The girls were weaving and knotting like crazy all week – churning out multiple bracelets for their friends on a daily basis. So if you hadn’t gotten the memo: friendship bracelets are IN! I hadn’t made a friendship bracelet, probably since before high school, but the idea of making a bracelet for someone as a symbol of your friendship is still pretty cool in my book.

Many of the high school girls I hung out with this past week were capable of creating some pretty intricate designs for their friendship bracelets, and I was still stuck at the very basic level. But the idea behind the bracelet was still there. Here’s a new kind of friendship bracelet at Favecrafts, the design has a sort of woven, macrame feel to it and uses flexwire. Have fun creating bracelets for all your nearest and dearest!

Handmade Nation, The Movie

A new documentary by first time director Faythe Levine, Handmade Nation takes a look at the evolution of the craft/DIY movement. From the website:

“Handmade nation documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, Handmade Nation explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination and networking.”

I Love the 80s

Anyone who was born in the 80s can appreciate the original Nintendo Entertainment System. There was nothing better than the original Mario Bros. game, which also came with duck hunt, a classic old school shooting game. I still love it. In fact, my boyfriend and I still own an original Nintendo (though we rarely play because 80s video games aren’t exactly compatible with plasma TVs). So in honor of my love for Mario and NES, here is a great Mario crochet blanket by Gege Crochet.

DIY Funerals — taking it too far?

March 26, 2009 by FaveCrafts 1 Comment

I’m not quite sure what to make of this story from GOOD magazine on DIY Funerals. In a way, it sounds to me like a touching, personal way to mourn the passing of a loved one. But at the same time, I also wonder if it’s taking the DIY movement a little too far.  Read the whole story here — DIY Funerals and the Quest for Authenticity.

So what do you think?  Anyone ever participate in a DIY funeral or thinking about having one…you know…in the future…

Etsy Pick: tofunkytown

Today’s Etsy Pick is tofunkytown, a shop full of retro-themed cigarette case wallets. The stainless steel cases are great for business cards, cash, credit cards or IDs. tofunkytown won me over with the 1969 Andy Warhol Esquire cover, which combines my love for Pittsburgh (Andy Warhol’s birthplace) and Esquire, one of few good magazines left.

Crafting the Oscars: Swarovski Crystal Curtain

February 23, 2009 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Behind all of the glitz and glamour of last night’s Academy Awards was, well, more glitz and more glamour. Framing the stage of the show at the Kodak Theatre was a magnificent curtain made from 92,000 Swarovski crystals. Interested in learning more about how the curtain came together, I did some research and here is what I learned:

The curtain was assembled entirely by hand in Smithfield, Rhode Island by the staff of Orion, a company that specializes in retail exhibits and displays. Orion assembled the last Swarovski crystal curtain, seen at the Oscars two years prior, which contained only 50,000 crystals. this year, Swarovski shipped the crystals from Austria to Orion, where workers spent an entire month and over 400 hours assembling the curtain entirely by hand. Each strand of the curtain contained 6,000 crystals.

Once assembled, the curtain, along with the rest of the Kodak Theatre stage, was put in the hands of David Rockwell. Rockwell, an acclaimed architect and designer, crafted the set, which he imagined as the space for an elegant party. In addition to designing the crystal curtain, Rockwell chose the 25 LED screens, some of which moved and reconfigured throughout the presentations and performances, in place of the traditional single big screen. He also added a “thrust stage,” leaving only four steps between the stage and the first row of seats, allowing Hugh Jackman easy access to Frank Langella’s lap.

“Drew Carey is Suprisingly Easy to Embroider”

You may not know this about me, but I am a HUGE fan of The Price is Right. I started watching at age 3 with my babysitter and was determined from then on to meet Bob Barker, get on the show, play Plinko and take home wads of cash. Mock me all you want, but the summer after my freshman year of college, I traveled to LA and waited in line for over 6 hours to be in the audience. Being at a taping took away all the glitz and glamour of the show and I didn’t win a dime, but I sat four rows away from Bob Barker and that was good enough for me. And even though I don’t think Carey can ever live up to Barker, Sarah of Totally Severe did a great job with this embroidered portrait.

DIY Goes to the Movies with Coraline

January 21, 2009 by FaveCrafts Leave a Comment

Slated to come out February 6th, Coraline is a new stop-motion animation movie from Director Henry Selick (best known for directing The Nightmare Before Christmas). The movie is about a young girl (Dakota Fanning) who steps through her closet into an alternate version of her life. The other life closely mirrors her own, but is more fantastical. What is most interesting about the movie, however, is that all 150 sets and 250 puppets used in the movie are handmade. From popcorn cherry blossoms to nylon fishing line body hair, the crew does it all. Check out this Wired article that provides detailed images and explanations of how the set was designed. You can also check out the movie trailer here.

I don’t wanna grow up…

Remember the days when life was simple and the smallest thing could totally make your day — like getting a balloon or getting crayons at a restaurant to color on your placemat with?  Childhood is a time when just about everything is exciting and fun. One of my personal favorite childhood past times was coloring books, but who said coloring books are only for kids? Check out these coloring books made specifically for adults!

1. In honor of tomorrow’s historical inauguration – spend a little time with this free Barack Obama coloring book page from Adult Coloring Designs blogspot.

2.  On the same subject, I just couldn’t resist posting the George W. Bush Coloring book byKaren Ocker.  Each page comes complete with a memorable quote from our now former President.

3. For those looking for a more complex coloring challenge, there are great free printable designs here such as this pretty Celtic Kaleidoscope design.

4. And just for laughs — who wouldn’t love the Gangsta Rap Coloring Book by Aye Jay

All I am saying, is give peeps a chance…

So am I just totally out of the loop or have you guys heard of these Peeps contests going down all over the country?  Yeah, seriously — art competitions specifically for masterpieces made from everyone’s favorite mallowy, sugary treat, which I happen to love to eat but never considered making into a craft.  But people have come up with some seriously amazing pieces of work — from portraits to dioramas to sculptures — made out of Peeps.  And while I doubt that these candies are a medium of choice, it really got me thinking about alternative supplies for crafting.  People have always thought up some wacky things to create art with — from blood to elephant feces and now to Peeps — but I bet it wouldn’t be too hard to come up with something not so far-fetched and equally as unique just lying around your house with which to create tons of awesome crafts.  And hey, if all else fails, enter the Seattle Times Annual Peep Contest.  You’ve got some time to come up with a creative concept; the deadline isn’t for a few more months.  Here’s some inspiration from past years to browse, but here’s the link to the Washington Post Contest:
