How to: Make Quick Christmas Cards

December 14, 2010 by FaveCrafts

I signed up to participate in the Holiday Card Swap at Brooklyn Bride again this year. If you’ve never participated in a swap before, here’s how it works: once I joined the swap, I was randomly assigned 5 partners (plus an extra for the Brooklyn Bride herself). I was then responsible for making homemade Christmas cards for each of my partners, and they would each give a homemade card to me (and each other) in return. I did the swap last year too,  and I was so inspired by all of the cards I received! Plus, I had a good time making the cards. I don’t make a large batch of Christmas cards to mail out every year because I just don’t have the time, but 6 cards is much more manageable!

Here’s what I made this year:

The cards were so simple and quick to make, I thought I’d share a mini-tutorial, in case any of you are scrambling to make some last-minute cards this year. Here’s what I did:

  1. The actual cards were made out of a piece of pre-cut cardstock, which I had leftover from some invitations I made last spring. I just folded them in half. (See, I told you this was simple!)
  2. Then I looked through my paper scraps and selected several different types of green paper. I ended up with 9 different varieties.
  3. I used my circle punch and punched circles from each type of paper, 11 per card.
  4. When I was done cutting, I arranged the circles into a wreath shape on each card and stuck them down with mini glue dots.
  5. Next I grabbed some mini Christmas bows from my stash, originally from the dollar store about a decade ago–it pays to hoard sometimes! I attached these to the wreaths with a 3-D adhesive square.
  6. For the inside, I cut a simple strip of red paper and adhered it with more glue dots, and then I punched 5 circles from some green cardstock with a basic hole punch. I stuck these circles down with more 3-D adhesives.
  7. I wrote a little message inside after the pictures were taken. And then, I was done!

Don’t Wait: Get a Head Start on Christmas Cards

November 1, 2010 by AllFreeChristmasCrafts

Sure the holiday season is exciting but time doesn’t stop just because it’s the most wonderful time of the year.  You’re working, you’re running errands, you have a million and one commitments and then one day you realize – the holidays are just days away.  That kind of revelation can ruin the jolly feelings associated with the season.

Luckily, FaveCrafts has an awesome array of Christmas cards ideas and patterns to get you prepared early.  In fact, there are so many ideas for Christmas cards – you can’t go wrong.  Whether it’s big and bold or small and understated, these cards are sure to make a statement.

Another great reason to create your own Christmas cards?  It’s a way to bond with family and friends!  Why not thrown a card crafting party?  Or gather up the kids and create personalized cards for each recipient.  Not only is it a cheap option, but it also shows you care.

What kind of Christmas cards do you plan to send this year?

One great option for homemade cards is the Clear Christmas Card.  It’s simple and understated, but still adorable.  The rubber stamp is a great touch and makes the card look like it was made by the professionals!  But unlike a card bought at the store, the Clear Christmas Card has delicate, one-of-a-kind details.

The Bleach Technique Christmas Card is another way to make an impression.  To create this card, you actually use household bleach to create the unique colors and imaged on the front of the card.  This is sure to make an impression on even the most ‘Bah Humbug’ recipients.

New Pattern Monday: Papercrafts Galore!

July 26, 2010 by FaveCrafts

I went to the store to buy a birthday card once and couldn’t believe how much they were charging for a boring card with a generic stock photo of a birthday cake on the front and some canned “sentiments” printed inside. Five bucks for a card? That’s more than I spent on the gift! Well, not really more, but close. I’ve been making my own cards, invitations, and thank you notes since then, and you should too.

119 Days Till Christmas: Tips for a Cost-Effective Christmas

August 28, 2009 by FaveCrafts

In the difficult economic climate, people are looking for meaningful gifts that won’t break the bank. While it can be difficult to maintain the balance between cost and quality when looking to purchase great presents for family and friends, why not cut costs in other areas, like that of Christmas cards? I found this great Christmas Cover Story Card by Cijaye DePradine at ScrapbookingDirections.com. It’s a beautiful and crafty antidote to those surprisingly expensive store-bought holiday cards. This card is a mini-scrapbook that you can dress up or down, and personalize with the message(s) of your choice. I know I’ll be making at least one of these cards this December!

While everybody is strapped for cash – and, as a result, inspiration – this holiday season, there’s one group that never seems to run out of innovative yet inexpensive gift ideas: crafters! Even a casual perusal of the crafting blogosphere reveals a surfeit of creative ideas. I like this Mini Quilt Christmas Décor by Theresa for Hillcreek Designs. This beautifully intricate quilt, which is emblazoned with cheerful Christmas imagery, can also be affixed to clothing. Even better, it’s crafted using applique techniques, so making it isn’t too time-consuming, either.

Charity Feature: Love Letters, Random Cards of Kindness

January 29, 2009 by FaveCrafts

There is something about receiving an unsolicited card that always makes me happy. It’s just nice to know that someone is thinking of you when it’s not your birthday, anniversary, graduation or a holiday. Also, being a big fan of paper crafts in general, I will take a beautifully made card over a cheesy e-card any day. (Don’t get me wrong, some e-cards are great – seriously, look at someecards.com – but I just love paper products!) That’s why I chose to feature Love Letters: Random Cards of Kindness as today’s charity feature.

Love Letters’ goal is “to create positive and inspiration homemade cards for children with life-threatening illnesses.” The group encourages people to create cards for children who range in age from newborn up to 18-years-old in the hopes that they can bring a smile to a child’s face and show that someone is thinking of them. Since its inception, Love Letters has created and distributed over 29,000 cards.

One thing I really love about this crafty charity is that you don’t have to have any crafting or really even any artistic talent to make a nice card for someone. And kids can get involved too! Love Letters is always looking for volunteers, sponsors, chapter organizers and card makers. If you are interested in getting involved in any way, learn more here.
