Michael Sellick
First we spoke with Michael Sellick from the Crochet Crowd. Mikey, as he is known on The Crochet Crowd, is an inspiring online crochet instructor. His YouTube channel has been seen by millions, and his continued enthusiasm for all things crochet inspires new yarn-lovers every day.

Hook and yarn recommendations: It’s best to start off with the cheap stuff, in case you don’t like it. I recommend the tulip crochet hook right now. Comfort grips and bamboo hooks are great because they don’t steal your body heat like metal ones, so you can crochet longer.

Great last-minute Christmas gifts: Go for infinity cowls; they’re quick and you can find a ton of great ideas on AllFreeCrochet.com!

About his new video series: The new series is all about how to follow patterns, which can be a real challenge. It helps to break it down to the basics from crochet diagrams to simply understanding the words. Sit down and read it aloud so you can understand the instructions.

Mikey’s favorite patterns: I love Fingerless Gloves; they make perfect sense for us crocheters that are always on the go. I also love the Scarf Inside a Scarf, which is made up of two scarves, one of which is woven into the other.

Coming soon on The Crochet Crowd: On the Hook Club, which starts January 15th, we will start a project with our crochet group and communicate on our progress. There will also be Mikey’s Afghan Club, where we begin an afghan and work through it together

For more great ideas or videos from Michael, find him on The Crochet Crowd.

Vickie Howell
Next up we talked to the lovely Vickie Howell. Vickie is best known for hosting HGTV’s show Knitty Gritty for 8 seasons; she was also the co-host of DIY Network’s Stylelicious and myLifetime’s CRAFTED series. She has also hosted several craft-based television specials and is the author of 7 craft books including her newest book, Step It Up Knits.

Beginner tips: It’s great to start with a yarn that speaks to you, whether it is the color or the feel, and then find a corresponding hook and pattern that you love.

Know your time limits: If you don’t have the time to start and finish a project that will take 60 hours, don’t start it. You should feel successful when you crochet. Quick projects that take some skill are great because you will be sure to finish them, and they’re rewarding.

Tell us about your new book: It’s full of quick, instant-gratification projects. These projects are designed to help you step your skills up to the next level. The wrist warmer and leg warmer projects are great and perfect for the colder seasons. Vickie also loves her Cable Ace Infinity Scarf; it’s a lovely design that employs a very interesting technique.

How to keep your knits from curling: Do a couple of rows on the bordering edges to give it a foundation; this will help keep it from curling even though some patterns do naturally.

How to tell whether a different yarn will work with a design. You don’t have to use the yarn listed in the pattern, but it has been attempted, so you have a guarantee it will work. If you want a different yarn, look at the fiber content and the gauge, and make a few stitches to see if it will come out the same.

For more great ideas from Vickie, check out her brand new book, Step It Up Knits!

Drew Emborsky
Last but absolutely not least, we got to chat with Drew Emborsky, The Crochet Dude. Drew has been featured in many national publications for his designs, written nine crafting books, and is the crochet expert on the hit PBS show Knit & Crochet Now!

How Drew became The Crochet Dude: I started to crochet for charity after the loss of my mother. As I crocheted to help others, it gave me comfort. That’s about when I started the blog, and fans started calling me the crochet dude, which definitely stuck!

Drew’s favorite things to crochet: I love to crochet purses, because they have to have structure and functionality. It’s so great to make crochet do something you would think it couldn’t, like fold over and stand on it’s own.

The best way to hide ends? Always leave a six inch tail, especially when you are changing colors. Weave them on very well and leave a longer tail than you would think, or else the project will fall apart.

All about Decades, Drew’s new yarn line: The theme of the product line is decades. What I wanted to do is bring back colors that I love from the past that were discontinued. Currently, Drew has yarn inspired by the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. There are 6 colors in each line, 1 multicolor and 5 solids.

For more great ideas from Drew, check him out on The Crochet Dude!

Jonathan Fong
First we chatted with Jonathan Fong, whose designs have been featured on HGTV, DIY, USA Network and Fox. He loves to inspire people creatively, and he sure does! His website, Style With a Smile TV is home to weekly how-to videos on decorating, crafts and entertaining.

The best DIY touch to holiday decorating: Start the party outside! It will help get people in the mood for the holidays. Use luminaries or tall candy canes to dec

orate your your walkway. Jonathan created large candy canes with PVC tubing and his gas grill for some easy and inexpensive holiday decor outdoors!

DIY PVC Candy Canes

Jonathan’s favorite Thanksgiving table setting: Frame table settings are an easy go-to project. Use 11×17 picture frames to make personalized table settings. Fit your plates, silverware, and a picture of each guest into these empty frames for a personalized touch. It will make your guests feel special that you took the extra time to prepare. You can check it out his DIY table setting ideas video.

The best handmade holiday gifts: Personalized soaps make a great holiday gift. Use any regular flat bar soap and put images of your recipients, their kids or their pets on the soap with some Mod Podge. If you coat them in hot wax, the images will be sealed and stay on even after use. These personalized soaps make great hostess gift, favors, or stocking stuffers!

Mark Montano
Next up was Mark Montano – The Blinged Bandit. From television personality to published author, Mark’s creativity knows no bounds. Mark is so crafty, he and his friends built his own separate house, specifically for crafting! It’s a miniature version of mark’s home and his go-to spot to craft!

Mark’s favorite projects from his new book, The Big Ass Book of Bling: Mark’s blue bird bangle, made from wood, easy molding putty and a blue bird head, is one of his favorites. But, his number one craft from his new book, are rings made from microwaved glass. The Fuse Works Microwave Kiln is an amazingly helpful invention that allows you to melt glass in your microwave, and make these glass rings!

We talked baby heads: So, if you have never picked up one of Mark’s books or looked online, you may not have seen some of his cool (or creepy?) baby doll crafts. It is definitely something to check out and as Mark said, you are either team baby head or your not. And surprisingly, even though his is a baby doll fan, he is not a fan of clowns.

Baby Doll Head Paperweight Mark Montano

Mark Montano Baby Head in a Box Project

Favorite crafting tool: While Mark believes, you cant just have one craft tool, if he had to choose it would be E6000 Glue, which he always has on hand.

Mark’s craft room – Mark doesn’t just have a room where he creates all his wonderful projects, he has a fairytale cottage. Behind his house in sunny California is a cute little cottage that looks like something straight out of an enchanted woods that is chock full of every craft supply and tool you can dream of. These photos make it look like the perfect oasis for any hobby.

Mark Montano Craft Room

Quick and easy holiday gift craft: A mixed media necklace made out of whatever you have left in your craft bin can make a great holiday gift. It’s lots of fun and you don’t have to purchase anything.

For more great ideas from Mark, check out his brand new book, The Big Ass Book of Bling! (or win one below)

Steven Brown Glitterville

Stephen Brown
Last, but not least, we spoke with Stephen Brown, the founder of Glitterville! He is the author of Glitterville’s new holiday how-to book series, and can be seen on TLC as a judge on Craft Wars.

Stephen’s experience on craft wars: It has been great to see all the crafty people come and exercise their skill. For the judges, it is a calm experience, the intensity comes along with the crafters trying to complete their challenges.

TLC Craft Wars

The idea behind Glitterville: While planning to start his own site, Stephen found himself always covered in glitter. Finally, a friend mentioned he looked like he was the mayor of some shiny town. It was that day, Stephen decided on the name Glitterville, for his now largely popular website that focuses on all things craft.

A great hostess gift idea for the holiday: It doesn’t have to be a huge gift, just something to show you made a little effort. Small loaves of pumpkin bread wrapped in shiny corsage bags can make a handmade great thank you.

Stephen has just released a new book,  Glitterville’s Handmade Halloween: A glittered guide for whimsical crafting!

First up was Candie Cooper! She’s known for her work with jewelry, but she loves crafting with kids and with that bubbly personality we know she’s great at it! Here are the highlights from our chat with her:

Candie’s favorite crafts to make with kids: Decoupaging and metal working if you’ve got a big group of boys that you want to keep busy! Sound scary to you? Candie gives some great tips on getting your 3rd graders crafting with metal and holding on to all their limbs.

Candie’s suggestions for holiday crafts with kids: Wreaths! There’s a lot of versatility with wreath making.

How to modify adult craft ideas for children: Letting kids take the reigns on some projects and let their imaginations run free.

Kid crafting tips: Stay organized and keep supplies limited, otherwise crafty chaos can take over really quickly.

Candie has a show called Hands on Crafts for Kids that airs on PBS! Check it out for even more educational kids crafts ideas.  She’s also got a new jewelry making book out called Necklaceology

Our next guest was Marisa Pawelko – The Modern Surrealist. She has a background in furniture design but now works in crafting and upcycling colorful goodies! Check out what she had to say:

Marisa’s favorite craft products to use with kids: Velcro and Styrofoam forms.

Best ways to keep clean with kids crafting: Save cardboard boxes to use as work surfaces or stick to things that are less messy like the Styrofoam forms. Also a kid safe scissor like the Scissor Mouse is absolutely essential.

Why crafting with kids is fun: They are full of imagination and invent fun new things.

Marisa is coming out with a brand new book next month all about duct tape crafts! Look for Crazy-Cool Duct Tape Projects to preorder your copy today!

Last but not least, we chatted with Breanna Newbill from Dollar Store Mom! She’s all about crafting on a budget and she loves cooking up delicious recipes as well as creating fun crafts for kids. Here are some tidbits she gave us:

How to craft on a budget: Be very careful with the materials that you pick out and make use of all the great supplies you can find in the Dollar Store.

Favorite kids craft ideas: Let the kids run wild with their imagination by just putting supplies out on a table.

Where to start crafting with kids: Number 1 tip? Ask them. Talk to them about what they want to do. They will come up with the most entertaining projects themselves.

Breanna works on Dollar Store Mom and tries to be the best mom she can be on a budget – don’t we all? Check out her site for fun crafting ideas for kids that don’t break the bank.

FaveCrafts Radio – September Recap!

Happy September! We just finished up talking with some wonderful crafty ladies about home decorating and easy DIY home decor crafts. I walked away with some great ideas for my own apartment, if you didn’t listen in you should listen to the recap and walk away with some ideas of your own.

FaveCrafts Radio September Flyer with Bios 400px September FaveCrafts Radio Show: Simple Home Decor

If you couldn’t listen in this month, make sure you tune in to the archives!

Listen to internet radio with FaveCrafts on Blog Talk Radio

This month we chatted with Amanda Formaro and Shalana Frisby who gave us some really amazing tips for decorating your living space. Especially since both Shalana and our Host Amy Anderson had just moved into new spaces that needed lots of decorating.

The easiest ways to spruce up your home is through making your own wall art and pillows! You can buy wood cheaply from Home Depot or pick up things from thrift stores and flea markets to put up on the walls. Pillows are so easy to make and change up too and they give any room a brand new feel without too much cost or work. What great and simple ideas!

Shalana loves to go room by room when decorating her home! What a cute idea! Each space can be it’s own separate getaway. She also loves up-cycling. Reusing items that you already have in the house is a great way to give something a fresh feeling without breaking the bank.

So we wanted to know about DIY home decor on a budget. The answer? Thrifting of course! Amanda told us that some fun pieces picked up from the thrift store and a can of spray paint can create a perfectly fun and kitschy wall statement. Amanda is a big lover of wall art, and let me tell you, she’s got me convinced too! Recycling and re-purposing is the best and cheapest way to decorate your home.

Amy told us that she never finds anything good at the thrift store. Amanda’s advice is to visit them more frequently because they get donations all the time and stuff rotates out, so you’ll always be able to find something new. Think of times when people are doing a lot of cleaning and donating – spring and fall.

We had a fun reader question from Jessica from Mad In Crafts. She asked “How difficult is it to hand those heavy signs on the wall?” Some suggestions we got were saw tooth hangers, picture hanging kits, and wire hanging kits.

Of course we got on the topic of IKEA because, you know, IKEA is awesome when it comes to cheap, ready-made home decor. We started chatting about IKEA Hackers, which is another fun blog with ideas for how you can make your furniture items your own for cheap! And really, who doesn’t like cheap?

Necessary tools for the home decor fan? Spray paint and a really good glue. And I have to agree.

We chatted with Amanda about styles and trends. Guess what’s in? Mocha and coffee colors. How perfect for fall! But Amanda made a good point, if you were following the colors trends every year, you’d be changing your walls all the time! A better idea? Try finding some old vases and using glass paint to change up the colors or making some new colored throw pillows. Accent pieces are the perfect thing you need for changing an entire room without having to paint the walls.

Shalana was our color expert and told us about using  shades of grey for more modern looking home decor. If you’re thinking ahead because you’re decorating now, the Spring 2013 color trends are pastels and brights!

That’s only some of what we chatted about. We also talked about wallpaper, using wallpaper as wall part, supplies for getting your home decor crafting inspirations started, and decorating with kids in the home!
