How to Knit a Scarf

August 25, 2010 by AllFreeKnitting

When I was younger I remember my grandma had taught me how to knit. She always knit blankets and afghans, so I decided I wanted to learn. I made a little baby blanket for my dolls, of course my mom had to help me too. Now that I’m older and know the difference between knitting and crochet, I can tell you, I think crochet is a lot easier. You only have to deal with two pieces of materials instead of three, one hook is all you need, not two needles.  Either way, knitting is still an easy hobby to take up.

Now that the weather will be changing soon it’s a great time to start making your fall and winter wearables. I can talk you through in how to make a knit scarf. Scarves are one of the easiest projects you can make when you’re a beginner.

First you have to start out with the purl stitch. The knit and the purl stitch are the two main stitches you will always use while knitting. A purl stitch is a backwards knit stitch. Bring the yarn around to the front of the project and slide the needle in from back to front. Insert the needle from your right hand into the left from back to front. You continue to wrap it around going from left to right as usual then you slide through under it catch the new loop on the back and slide the other one off. If you continue to follow this pattern you should ultimately create a beautiful scarf. Again, the knit stitch and purl stitch are the most commonly used for knitting patterns.

Some fun knit scarf patterns for your liking:

  2. Chevron Scarf
  3. Flounce Scarf
  4. Luxurious Alpaca Scarf
