Earth Week: Borrowing the Earth from Our Children

April 26, 2012 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” – Chief Seattle

Chief Seattle, a Native American leader and early environmentalist, emphasized the importance of living an evironmentally-friendly lifestyle. Native American cultures taught their children to value nature and the efficient, non-wasteful use of natural resources because they understood that the Earth provides us with a home and all of our basic needs. Earth Week is based upon this wisdom.

The Earth Week mantra is simple: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It is vital to reduce one’s environmental impact because we must keep the future clean and green for the benefit of our children and future generations.

This is especially true for us crafters, who can potentially create a lot of waste in the creative process. Fortunately, green crafting offers a simple and fun way for children and adults to repurpose old items and used items to create something amazing, and FaveCrafts can help! We can begin teaching our kids from an early age that more bird will sing in the trees if people use waste materials to make recycled kids crafts instead of adding to another landfill.

If you know a little crafter who loves the Earth, keep reading for a chance to win a special eco-friendly prize from Arterro!

Guest post: Preparing for Back to School

August 16, 2011 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

Kira from Tip Hero offered some great tips for making back to school a thrifty and creative time.

As much as the kids may be in denial, the time is almost upon us. Are you ready to send your kids back to school with everything they need in order to be successful in the upcoming school year? If not, take a look at a few tips that may help you along the way:

Take Inventory in Your Own Home

Before you go out shopping, make sure you take full inventory of what you already have. Go through closets and sort out what can and can’t be worn. Go through junk and office drawers to find writing implements and other necessary school supplies. The last thing you want to do is buy things that you already have.

Also, take advantage of free things that you come across. For example, if you’re out somewhere that gives out free pens, don’t pass up the offer!

Shop Those End of Summer Sales

Summer clothing gets a lot cheaper toward the end of summer when it’s no longer in demand. However, now may be the perfect time for you to stock up on “summer” clothing for your child and score some deals. If you’re creative in the way you dress your little one, you can layer summer pieces to make them work for fall, winter and spring.

Also, during the time leading up to back-to-school, you’ll find sales on things like basic school and office supplies. If you need to buy some of the things on your child’s list, you can at least shop the sales and find great competitive deals pretty much anywhere.

Host a “Back-to-School Swap”

At clothing swaps, you can take advantage of other people’s gently used clothing and supplies while at the same time donating items you can no longer use. Here are some tips from Get Rich Slowly:

  • Decide Who to Invite: for back-to-school swaps, you’ll want to invite families with kids of different (yet similar) ages. Kids will probably not want to swap clothes with kids from their classes, but you also want the clothing to fit the kids in the swap.
  • Make an Announcement: give people a couple of weeks heads up before you host your swap. You want to give people enough time to get their unwanted stuff in order before the swap.
  • Set Rules for What Can Be Swapped: decide what people should bring and what should just go straight into a Goodwill bin. For example, the number one rule should be that everything swapped should be clean and in good condition. Set other ground rules that work for you and the people who will attend your swap.
  • Gather Supplies: have a ready supply of trash bags for people to take clothes home in. Other things that could come in handy are sharpies for labeling, full length mirrors for “fittings,” and perhaps some light snacks and beverages.

Check FreeCycle and Craigslist

FreeCycle and Craigslist are great places to look for free and cheap back-to-school needs. You can frequently find gently used kids clothing on both of these sites, so keep your eyes peeled in the weeks leading up to back-to-school time (and after)!

Look for Discounted Gift Cards

If you’re going to be shopping at a certain retailer anyway, you may as well look into doing it more cheaply. You can prepare ahead of time by looking into buying discounted gift cards online from places like Plastic Jungle and Cardpool.

Stick to the List

The temptation to buy everything new might be overwhelming, but don’t give in! Be firm and stick to the things your child actually needs. Only buy extra if you can find bulk bargains on things that your child will absolutely need throughout the course of the school year.

Personalize on Your Own

Just because you’re sticking to the list doesn’t mean that your child can’t have some stylish supplies. Instead of buying an expensive Justin Bieber lunchbox, for example, buy a plain one and adorn it with cheap stickers or decals. Basically, look to buy budget-friendly basics and jazz them up on your own. You can even make a day out of bedazzling supplies with your kid if you’d like!

Take Advantage of Tax-Free Holidays

Check this list from About.com to see if your state will be holding a tax-free weekend this year. If so, plan your shopping accordingly so that you can take advantage of the savings. In some cases, you can enjoy up to 10% off of your back-to-school purchases!

Choose Quality Over Quantity

When it comes to things like backpacks, it may be tempting to go for the cheapest option you can find. However, in the case of a backpack especially, a nice, quality bag will likely last your child many years whereas a cheap, flimsy one may not even make it through the first half of this year. Invest in the purchase that will save you the most money over time when you can!

Kids Saturday: Scrapbooking

September 11, 2010 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

Now that summer is coming to a close, it’s time to reminisce about all the fun times you’ve had. I’m sure you’ve taken plenty of pictures of your kids at the pool, while you went camping, the fun zoo days and so much more. Have fun with your kids this weekend by making some fun scrapbook pages with them.

One of my favorite layout is the I Scream for Ice Cream page. Who doesn’t like a child with a messy face full of chocolate ice cream, you have to capture that moment. And what about the Summer Memories page? You can fill this with all kinds of pictures from the summer. It doesn’t just have to be one specific theme.

When making scrapbook pages you can use many different materials from colorful construction paper, to cutouts, to fun stickers and designed backgrounds. You can go all out with markers and sparkle pens, it’s so much fun, your kids will have a blast. Check out the other fun scrapbook layouts!

Kids Saturday: Dog Days

August 28, 2010 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

Okay okay the summer is officially coming to a close, sad face, I know. We should try to embrace it and spend it the best way we can. I must tell you the, the end of summer is great for me. My husband and I just bought the cutest puppy ever. He’s only eight weeks old and he’s pretty well trained at this point. He is the perfect addition to start our little family. Of course we need get a collar and leash for him, otherwise we can’t walk him. Which brings me to the topic of discussion.

This weekend you should spend some quality time with your kids and your pets. We have some really cute new pet projects that will be so much fun to make. These are a bit advanced as you need a sewing kit, so obviously your child will need supervision unless they know how to sew. Go ahead and make a glitsy glam dog leash to go with this glitsy glam collar. I truly adore these even though our puppy is a boy. I guess if you really wanted you can use any color you wish, but I would stick with the hot pink and black, it really makes a statement. Once the project is made you, your kids and your four-legged friend can go out and have a great time. Embrace the end of summer by celebrating the coming of fall.

If you’re looking for more children’s sewing crafts you can find them here.

Kids Saturday: It’s a Twister!

July 24, 2010 by AllFreeKidsCrafts

This weekend is a toasty one in Chicago, one of the hottest days of the year. If you’re going to do anything outside, make sure you be careful and drink a lot of water. If you’re going to stay safe and keep inside then you can craft with a lot of water instead of drinking it.

I’m sure many of you have done Science projects when you were younger and now you’re helping your children make their own projects. Here’s a fun crafty project you can all have fun with. It’s a twister, it’s a twister! Make a tornado.

All you need is two empty two-liter bottles, a piece of plastic or a rubber hose with a diameter a little smaller than the bottle necks so you can connect them. You can use anything else to fill the bottles: confetti, plastic houses, anything small and fun.

It’s so easy to make! Fill one bottle up with as much water as you want. I’d say you can fill it a bit more than half way, then add your houses or confetti, whatever you chose. Next you put the rubber piece between the two bottles to hold them together by the two openings. You can then swirl your tornado and have some fun! It’ll go from one bottle to the other!

Read this article for some other fun things to do with plastic bottles and recyclables.
