Some interesting predictions! The giant knitting looks amazing, and I have to admit I’ve had my eye on a few pieces like that lately. I often read your site for inspiration and it hasn’t failed me yet 🙂
I really appreciate that you’ve chosen to write about rising crafting trends in 2018 because it allows us, as readers, to stay in touch with contemporary society. Crafting can sometimes stick to classical projects, such as scrapbooks and knitting. So, it’s important to recognize that crafting, like fashion, also experiences change according to societal aesthetics. I also think that it’s important to give us readers a chance to be involved with these trends by trying our hand at them. We are then able to connect with others around us, whether young or old, and not let generational gaps become a dividing factor.
These 2018 craft predictions are so fun! I have especially seen macrame popping up in people’s apartments. I recently went to a beautiful wedding where the couple said their vows in front of a macrame backdrop. It made for great pictures! I like how you also included paracord projects. It seems like the skills used to create a paracord creation could help a crafter master macrame.
I also like the idea of making my own statement earrings, especially because I like my style to stand out from the crowd. I followed the link, and the directions mention making the earrings for a friend. I am preparing to go on a service trip to Africa this May. Selling handmade earrings would be a great way to raise money!
Thank you for all the 2018 ideas. It looks like it’s going to be a great year for crafting.
I’ve gotta say, I’m a bit skeptical about those sheer socks
However, friendship bracelet fiend that I am, I am very interested in macrame, hopefully we can see some more of those sorts of projects on the site, it’s one of those arts that kinda gets pushed to the side in favor of knitting, but it’s still so cool! I really hope that prediction pans out.
Having spent the last few months living in London, I can vouch for the beret trend making an appearance in 2018! Tweed yarn is a definite contender for this project; it won’t stretch out and has a beautiful flecked color that adds flare to the piece. Nothing catches the eye more than a bold red beret in the London rain 🙂
I’m a huge fan of the sheer socks. I know sheer outfits have been in fashion as of late (especially in the form of skirts and dresses). Excited to see a nice spin on a popular trend.
The related paracord and macrame styles are so innovative! I love that these similar trends have both a useful and decorative function. The water bottle holder would come in so handy on some of my bags; sometimes there just aren’t enough outer pockets. And I love the use of the macrame with the small plants, what a beautiful way to bring some green into your home or office. They could be used to hold lots of other things too, or created in bold colors and designs to brighten a wall. The possibilities are endless. And that seems like the real trend of 2018 crafting: your multipurpose projects are as limitless as your imagination, and can focus on both beauty and functionality!

I love revivals of and new takes on older crafts. My father used to make macrame plant hangers in the ’70s (though not as fancy as the three-pot holder shown here) and also did some string art. He did not often make things, but these crafts appealed to him for some reason. To this day, I think of his plant hangers when I see macrame.
I also love the quilled earrings. Quilling is another old craft, and I have the paper, tools and instructional books to teach myself. I’ve made one card and helped my son make a card when he was young, but I haven’t gotten around to doing more. The earrings would make a great gift, however, which might be the incentive I need to pull my materials out and have at it.
