Turquoise Refurbished Chalkboard

By: Kathy Owen for Petticoat Junktion

Convert an old vintage mirror into something useful and decorative.  This Turquoise Refurbished Chalkboard is made with a thrifty junk store find, and it's a great way to leave your loved ones notes, store jewelry, or just add some color to your bedroom!  Turquoise not your color?  Don't worry!  You can use whatever color you'd like in this tutorial.  This refurbished project is excellent proof that one man's trash is another thrifty girl's treasure!

Materials:

  • Vintage mirror dresser topper
  • Paint in color of your choice
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Paper towels
  • Knobs (optional)

Instructions:

  1. This vintage mirror dresser topper came from My Favorite Junk Shop.  It had the cardboard backing but the mirror was gone.

  2. The Junktion Technical Specialist cut a piece of board to replace the mirror and he also cut the two long ends off the mirror stand.

  3. I painted the frame with turquoise paint that I mixed myself.

  4. I painted with the chalkboard paint and then I distressed the turquoise frame by the wet method. I used the wet shop towels and rubbed the paint off. You have to do this just after the paint dries. Don’t wait too long.

  5. The cute little knobs for hangers came from Hobby Lobby.  I drilled holes in the frame for the knobs. Easy.

This is a nice idea as a chalkboard and quite useful. Other options might be to replace with another mirror or even several mirrors put together, or you could cover the backing Cher batting and cover with fabric for a bulletin board, or cork board, or crisis cross with ribbon. Great inspiration!

Love it! What a great idea!
