Textured Fern Canvas

By: Heidi Borchers for Inspired at Home

Adhere layers of scrapbook paper and open-weave sinamay ribbon to a nature-themed art canvas with Aleenes Super Tacky Permanent Adhesive. This project comes to us from Heidi Borchers of Inspired at Home

Textured Fern Cavnas

  • Aleene’s® Crystal Clear Tacky Spray™
  • Aleene’s® Fast Grab Tacky Glue®
  • Aleene’s® True Snow
  • Stretched art canvas – 12” x 12”
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Ribbon – sinamay natural
  • Stencil – fern
  • Twine or cording
  • Palette knife
  • Waxed paper
  • Acrylic paint – leaf green, metallic gold, rust
  • Paint brush – ½” flat

  1. Paint canvas with rust acrylic paint. Let dry.
  2. Spray Aleene’s® Crystal Clear Tacky onto back of scrapbook paper. Align and press onto painted canvas.
  3. Place ribbon onto canvas and mark area to apply glue. (Note that some of the ribbon has been designed to overhang the canvas.) Lay ribbon onto waxed paper. Protect non-glue areas of ribbon with additional pieces of waxed paper. Spray ribbon with . Lift from waxed paper and place on canvas gently pressing in place.
  4. For texture design, mix 4 parts True Snow with one part green acrylic paint. Repeat for metallic gold.
  5. Lay stencil on canvas. Use palette knife to spread green texture over stencil. Apply a small amount of gold texture over green to highlight stencil design. Lift stencil to reveal design. Let dry.
  6. Apply line of Tacky glue down middle of stenciled fern design. Lay twine into glue. Let dry.

Heidi’s Designer Tips: Art canvases look great when grouped. Vary the design layout, color and textures when creating a mix and match group. This canvas also looks great framed inside a large shadow box.
