Burlap Bulletin Board

Add paint and burlap to an old bulletin board to give it a fresh look. If you're looking for fun craft ideas, recycled materials are a great resource. Make a Burlap Bulletin Board from Cyndee Kromminga that you can hang in an room - this decor craft will never go out of style.

  • Basic bulletin board with wood frame
  • Acrylic latex paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Ruler
  • Heavy-duty fusible web
  • Scissors
  • Burlap
  • Iron
  • Protective pressing cloth
  • Craft glue
  • Brass, wood or lace applique

  1. Choose a paint that coordinates with your burlap color and the color scheme of the room where your bulletin board will be used. Paint the frame and at least 1-inch inside the frame on the front of the board. Since my board had been previously painted with dark images, I painted the board's entire surface. This prevented the previous images from showing through the burlap covering.

  2. Measure the bulletin board's cork surface inside the wood frame. Cut a piece of heavy-duty fusible web using these measurements.
  3. Note: Heavy-duty fusible web may also be labeled as "ultra-hold" or similar description, depending on the manufacturer. This web has a very thick layer of glue, perfect for those projects that do not require sewing. In fact, sewing through fabric that has been applied with heavy-duty fusible web will cause glue build up on your needle and skipped stitches. For sewing projects, lightweight fusible web is recommended.
  4. Lay your burlap on your ironing surface. Iron to remove wrinkles and creases. Lay a protective pressing cloth, such as a flour sack kitchen towel, under the burlap. This will prevent the glue from seeping through the burlap to your ironing surface.  Place the cut fusible web on the burlap with the glue side facing down. Iron the back of the fusible web to adhere it to the burlap.

  5. Cut the burlap around the shape of the fusible web. Peel off the paper backing from the fusible web.
  6. Place the fused burlap on the front surface of the bulletin board frame. Lay your protective pressing cloth over the burlap. This will prevent the glue from seeping through to your iron. Press the burlap to adhere it to the board. Remove the pressing cloth while the burlap is still hot.

  7. Since my bulletin board was a junk find, the back no longer looked new and pretty. I removed the hanging hardware, then fused burlap to the back as well. I then reattached the hanger.
  8. Lay the bulletin board on your work surface with the front facing up. Determine which edge will be the top. Apply craft glue to the back of a brass, wood or lace applique. Center the applique at the top of the bulletin board, below the frame and on the burlap. Allow the glue to dry.
