Top 10 Thanksgiving Decorations to Make, Part 2

By: Caley Walsh

Recently, I published Part 1 of the Top 10 Thanksgiving Decorations to Make.  While living aboard for several years, I always missed the quintessential American holiday of Thanksgiving. Therefore, I am a big advocate for honoring Thanksgiving as much as the other end-of-year holidays. As a craft editor, I’ve been gathering the best Thanksgiving decorations to make this holiday.

Turkey craft are an obvious choice for the best Thanksgiving decorations to make, but they also offer a surprisingly amount of variety. Turkey crafts range from easy and fun crafts for kids to more elegant crafts, and all are great for Thanksgiving decorating. With a coat of paint and some craft foam feathers, you can recycle un-carved pumpkins from Halloween into Thanksgiving turkeys.  You can also use foam balls for the basic body shape of a turkey. Use a smaller foam ball or egg-shaped foam shape for the head.

For something easy and adorable, take two brown pom-poms, one slightly smaller than the first, in yarn or wool roving. Glue the smaller pom-pom to the top as the head and add feathers to the back in orange, red and yellow felt. Add eyes, beak and waddle to the head pom-pom. Pom-poms are easy to make with a pom-pom maker or cardboard circles. Place each of the pom-pom turkeys on your guests plates.

More turkey Thanksgiving decorations to make:

  • Turkey Bead Pendants- Create beaded turkeys with this tutorial for fun and elegant wine charms. Guests can take home as a party favor.
  • Turkey Piñata - A turkey piñata is surprisingly easy to create with balloons, papier-mâché (newspaper and glue) and paint. Kids can help decorate the piñata before Thanksgiving and it will provide the perfect activity on the holiday.
  • Natural Turkey Decoration- This turkey decoration is made with natural items like pinecones, nuts and beans. You likely already have all the materials in your house.
  • Decorative Turkey- This felt turkey is adorable and easy to create with felt. The kids can also help with this craft.

Table Linens

Update boring table linens with a bit of Thanksgiving crafting.  Use stencils and fabric paint to easy add autumn leaves, cornucopias or other harvest images to a plain tablecloth. You can even use permanent fabric dye, stencils and a paintbrush to create a lasting Thanksgiving tablecloth. Use freezer paper to create your own stencil from images on the web.

Try your hand at embroidery or cross-stitch with a leaf or other design in the corner of yours placemats or napkins. You can use an embroidery or cross-stitch chart to make any needlework easier. Create embroidered napkin rings with a ring of embroidered felt or fabric glued over a cardboard tube (toilet paper tubes cut into 1-inch segments for example). Embroider the felt with a simple acorn shape.

  • Flower Bouquet Felt Block- Follow this technique to add hand-embroidered felt shapes to fabric or felt. You could use this technique to embellish your table linens with leaves and other harvest shapes.

Burlap is also a fantastic material for Thanksgiving, with its rustic, harvest appearance. Use looser-weave burlap picked up from your local garden center. You can make a long table runner to extend the length of your dining room table and/or individual placemats. You can certainly sew the edges neat and clean, or simply cut straight and let the edges fray for that rustic look.
