Tee Shirt Yarn Necklace

(2 Votes)

If you find yourself with a handful of shirts that are too big, too small, or out of date, don't toss them...upcycle them!  This Tee Shirt Yarn Necklace is a great way to reuse an old tee and turn a well-loved top into a must-have fashion accessory.  This is a no-sew tee shirt craft project that's easy to do with only a few hours of free time.

  • Plain unprinted jersy tee shirt with no side seams
  • Scissors
  • Large circlar pendant

  1. Fold the shirt in half, then cut off the hem.

  2. Starting at the cut edge, cut the shirt into 1/2” strips until just below the sleeves.  Each strip should open up to create a loop.  The more loops you use, the thicker your piece will be.  For my lanyard, I used only four loops.

  3. Take each loop in your hands and gently pull in opposite directions until the edges curl in.

  4. Gather all of your loops together as shown in the photo.  You will also need a round object with a hole.  Here I am using a half of a Moving Mud shawl closure. (For my lanyard I used an existing lanyard and removed the strap.)  You will also need to scrap pieces of t-shirt (either cut two scrap pieces from the rest of the T-shirt, or sacrifice one of the loops).

  5. Holding all the loops together, use a scrap piece to tie each end of the loops together.  Then pull one of the knotted ends through your circular object.

  6. Continue pulling on the knotted end until circular piece is half way between the two ends. Then fold the piece in half by bringing the two knotted ends together.

  7. With the circular piece remaining still, hold the knotted ends together and turn them a few times as shown in the photo to create a twist.
