Knit Leggings

By: BreeAnna Laub for String with Style

Knit leggings are back in style!  With this fun pair of leggings, you can be fashionable (and warm) in no time.  There is a color change, but if you're comfortable with making the switch, this is a great project for beginners!  You can also mix and match your favorite colors so you have leggings to match every outfit.  These are great to wear with boots, out on a walk, or just to keep warm at work or at school.

knit leggings

  • Sport weight (3) yarn in contrasting colors
  • 4 double pointed knitting needles (for adult size you may need 5) size 6
  • Yarn needle
  • Leg measurements

Necessary Leg Measurements:

  • Around the thigh (or where you want the legging to end. If you are going to wear them over something like elastic pants or jeans - make sure you are wearing them when you measure.) Do not measure this tight! you want the measuring tape to fit comfortably around your leg.
  • The length that you want the legging to be.

5 st across = 1 in
7 st up = 1 in

The pictures are of a pair that I made for my 3 mo old daughter. I will use her measurements in my description of this pattern so that you can see the math. Please insert your numbers for any measurements in [].
I do not recommend using her leg measurements to just make a pair for a 3 mo old. She is TINY! For the best fit, please measure the child that will be wearing the finish product.

  1. Take your thigh measurement and multiply it by 5. [7x5=35]
  2. You are going to want this number to be divisible by 3 so that the ribbing comes out correctly so add {do not subtract} 1 or 2 to get your number there. [35+1=36 36/3=12]
  3. Divide the stitches [36 in this case] as evenly as possible across 3 of your 4 knitting needles {4 of your 5 if you are making larger ones.}
  4. You are going to rib 2x1 {K2, P1} around for 5 rows in your main color {MC}.
  5. K 3 rows in contrast color {CC}.
  6. K 5 rows in MC.
  7. K 3 rows in CC.
  8. The next section is going to be K in your MC. The number of rows will be calculated by your desired length. Take your "length" number and subtract 4. Multiply that number by 7. [10-4=6 6x7=42] In this case I did 42 K rows in MC.
  9. K 1 row in CC.
  10. K 3 rows in MC.
  11. K 1 row in CC.
  12. K 1 row in MC.
  13. Rib 2x1 {K2, P1} in MC for 5 rows.
  14. Bind off.
