Green Crafting Tip: Dress Up Wire Hangers

Don't discard old wire hangers; personalize them with ribbon wrapping.

  1. Make sure to select fabrics and colors that will not bleed onto your clothing as it hangs.
  2. Cut or rip fabric into narrow strips and hot glue three strips on the wire stem.
  3. Let glue dry before proceeding.
  4. Braid the strips over and under the wire, covering it completely as you go.
  5. After you braid the entire way around, back to the stem, cut the loose ends to size.
  6. Hot glue the ends in place.

I like this idea, but would also like to see a finished product.

An old use from when I was a child, was to cut 1"x 3" strips of netting (the large, scruffy type, not the kind used for veils) and tie them in a single knot over the hanger. This creates a 'fluff' to prevent shoulder creases in soft clothing such as silk, satin and crepe dresses and blouses. The netting will not bleed and you can choose what ever color suits you. If they get dusty, just run a tub of hot water with a little bit of shampoo or dishwashing liquid in it, swishe them around, then rinse under clear, cold water. Let the dry by shaking excess water and hanging on the clothesline or on the shower rod with a towel underneath.

Sounds like a nice idea. Would like to see a finished photo of the project if anyone has one. Thank you. )
