Classic Black and White Frame

Show off your favorite photo with this beautiful Classic Black and White Frame.  Made with a lovely napkin and a simple wooden frame, this homemade frame uses simple decoupage techniques to create something truly stunning and lovely.  Embellish your frame with Polymer clay roses and a silver mirror word, such as "Faith", "Love", or "Friendship", to turn your simple frame into something meaningful and special.

Classic Black and White Frame

  • Wooden photo frame
  • 10/32” paint brush
  • Mod Podge
  • Water-based varnish
  • Flesh-colored acrylic paint
  • Napkin with suitable black-and-grey motifs printed on it
  • One big red rose made from polymer clay
  • Two smaller red roses made from polymer clay
  • Silver mirror word ~ for this project the word Faith was used
  • Clear drying craft glue
  • Hairdryer
  • Pair of standard scissors
  • Few sheets of old newspapers to protect the working area
  • Old cloth

  1. Paint a thin layer of flesh-colored acrylics over the frame and dry thoroughly with the hairdryer.

  2. Cut out strips from the napkin and decide how they will be arranged on the frame. For this project, the sides of the frame were not covered with the napkin.
  3. Remove the bottom layers from all the napkin strips.
  4. Put the first napkin strip in place and paint a substantial amount of Mod Podge over the top of the strip, so that it will stick to the frame. As the napkin can stretch or tear easily, it is best to start painting from the middle of the strip towards the sides, and working in small triangles. The Mod Podge must only be applied to the top, and must not run underneath the napkin.
  5. Use the hairdryer to dry the strip.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 with all the other napkin strips, until the frame has been covered.
  7. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the whole frame. The Mod Podge will protect the napkin and give the product a smoother finish.
  8. Dry the frame with the hairdryer.
  9. Repeat steps 7-8 ~ you need to apply at least 4 coats of Mod Podge, but remember that with every layer, the direction in which the Mod Podge is applied, must be changed from horizontal to vertical to horizontal, etc. Also, remember that after every layer of Mod Podge, the frame must first be dried thoroughly with the hairdryer.
  10. Add a layer of water-based varnish to the top and sides of the frame. Dry thoroughly with the hairdryer.
