By: Kathleen George for STYROFOAM Brand Foam

This little penguin is ready to hit the slopes with his little striped snow hat and red skis. This adorable holiday ornament makes a great handmade Christmas decoration or display it all season long and let it snow!

Ski Penguin Handmade Ornament

  • STYROFOAM Brand Products:
    • Egg, 3"
  • Fabric, 6" x 3" knit (hat)
  • Felt, 3" x 3" black; orange, pink and green scraps
  • Acrylic craft paint, black, red
  • Two wiggle eyes, 1/4"
  • Two toothpicks
  • Two sequins, 1/2"
  • Two craft sticks
  • Red ribbon, 1/8" x 8"
  • Quilt pins, three with red tops
  • Sharp pencil
  • Thick, white craft glue or low temperature glue gun and glue sticks
  • Pattern

  1. Press wide end of egg on tabletop to flatten. Draw oval on egg to mark stomach area. Paint egg black except for stomach area. Let dry.
  2. Whittle one end of each craft stick to form tips for skis. Paint skis and two toothpicks red. Let dry.
  3. Using pattern, cut two wings from black felt. Cut from felt: elongated orange diamond for beak; two pink circles for cheeks; and two small green holly leaves.
  4. Fold knit fabric in half, right sides together. Stitch a 1/4" seam along top and side; turn right side out. Turn up bottom edge twice; baste cuff at the back seam to hold in place.
  5. Glue egg to skis. Glue hat to top of egg. Glue on eyes, beak, cheeks and wings. Push sequins onto ends of toothpicks. Glue toothpicks to tips of wings. Tie ribbon in loop; pin to front of hat so penguin will hang straight. Pin holly leaves on hat using remaining red quilt pins.

Where do I find the pattern for the wings, beak , cheeks and holly leaves?

Hi, granny11 0179787! It does not appear like there is a pattern for the beak, cheeks, or holly leaves, but you could easily draw them yourself. For the wing pattern, check out the project on the original site: that helps! -Kaylee, Editor of FaveCrafts

How cute
