Changing Leaves and Holiday Wreaths

By: The Editors of

Let's fall into the fall season. Summer is closing out and the leaves are starting to change color, so let's add some color to your designs and decorations. The air is turning to a crisp chill and the holiday wreaths begin to appear. Fall is the season to decorate your home beautifully for the holidays. The kids get to play in the big pile of raked leaves, while you present your fall decorations. People often forget and ask "when is the first day of fall?" Well I'm here to tell you that. I'm also curious as to why do leaves change color in the fall? Have your guests over, sit around a beautifully decorated table and let's learn about this great season and craft all the great things associated with it.

When is the first day of fall?

Often this question is asked. Do we really know the exact date of the first day of fall? Of course we do! My definition of fall is when the kids start going back to school and the leaves start changing colors. The real answer to this question is around September 22 or 23. Depending on what year it is and what day it falls on. The first day of fall also depends on where you live. If you live on the Northern Hemisphere then fall begins in September, but if you live on the Southern Hemisphere, fall begins in March. Although sometimes you may not know the exact date of the first day of fall, there are definite signs to help you out. The weather becomes a bit chilly, the harvests begin and the leaves change color.

Why do leaves change color in the fall?

Why exactly do leaves change color in the fall? I thought it was a part of life and a part of nature. In fact, it's actually a scientific explanation. Plants make their own food. They take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. They turn water and carbon dioxide into food using sunlight and something called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is green. It gives leaves their green color.

Winter days are short and dry. Many plants stop making food in the fall. The chlorophyll goes away. Then we can see orange and yellow colors. These colors were in the leaves all summer, but the green covered them up.

Some leaves turn red. This color is made in the fall, from food trapped in the leaves. Brown colors are also made in the fall. They come from wastes left in the leaves.
