Hibiscus Pastel DIY Tie Dye Shirt

At the left shoulder area, put a marble between the front and back of the shirt. Wrap the front of the shirt around the marble and tie around the fabric with 1mm twine to keep the marble in place. Repeat with two more marbles.

Add three marbles to the right shoulder.

Add the rest of the marbles to the bottom right part of the shirt, adding the marbles close to one another to resemble a bunch of grapes.

Add two tie and dye flowers to the shirt, one to the bottom left and one to the centre of the shirt. To create a flower, pinch a section of the shirt between your fingers. Poke it up and twist the fabric in a circular manner. Tightly wrap 3mm twine around the poked-up section to keep it in place.

Crumple the shirt and tie it with 1mm twine to keep it in position. Now you are ready to color the shirt!

Dissolve the pink dye powder and 1 cup of salt in a liter of boiling water.

Once the powder and salt have dissolved, add more water to the pot. The pot should have enough water to completely cover the shirt.

Bring the colored water to a boil.

Wet the shirt in cold water, and then add it to the pot with the boiling dye solution. 

Keep boiling the pot on the stove for 15-20 minutes. Stir the pot regularly to make sure that the shirt gets dyed on all sides.

Note: Wear rubber gloves when following this step. Take the shirt out of the pot and rinse it in your sink with cold water to remove any excess dye. Keep rinsing until the water is clean and then gently cut off the twine added in step 2e. Do not remove the rest of the twine, i.e. those around the marbles and flowers.

Crumple the shirt again and now tie the gathered shirt with 3mm twine, as well as with 1mm twine.

Repeat steps 3 to 7, now using the blue T-shirt dye.

Wearing rubber gloves again, take the shirt out of the pot and rinse it to remove any excess dye. Keep rinsing until the water is clean and then gently cut off all the twine. 

Rinse the shirt again and then hang it in a shady area to dry.

Put the T-shirt flat on the working surface. Slide the piece of cardstock inside the T-shirt between the back and front sides of the T-shirt ~ this will prevent the ink from staining the back side. Keep this cardstock in place until you have finished the design. 

Position the stencil on the shirt. 

Use the violet and ultramarine blue fabric pens to add the stencil design of the first hibiscus flower to the shirt. 

Add four more flowers, using ultramarine blue; violet; sky blue and neon pink.

Note: The flower petals and the pistil for each flower should have different colors.

Use the black pen to add some detail to the flower petals, and the neon yellow pen to add some highlights to the pistils.

Iron the shirt again to set the fabric pens.
