Materials List

  • Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie
  • Aleene’s Tacky Glue
  • Small Balloons
  • Battery Operated Tea Lights
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Heavy Spray Starch

Instructions:

  1. Blow up the balloons to the size desired for your finished lanterns.

  2. Use your fingers to spread the glue on the yarn as you wrap it around the balloon. Be sure to leave an opening around the knot in the balloon big enough to fit the tea light into.

  3. Let the balloons with the yarn on them dry overnight.

  4. Use the scissors to pop the balloon near the knot. Peel the balloon from the inside of the yarn lantern, turning the lantern inside out if needed. It should be just soft enough to gently turn inside out, and then right side out after the balloon is removed.

  5. Reshape the balloon, and apply spray starch if additional stiffening is needed.

  6. Add a hanging string to each lantern in your desired length, tying each end of the string to opposite sides of the opening. Trim off excess yarn.

  7. Insert tea light and hang and enjoy your new DIY yarn ball lights!
