Foil Paper Irises

Foil Paper Irises

From the Designer: "One of my favorite flowers is the iris. I have Dutch iris, Douglas iris and several varieties of Bearded Iris in my yard. I've always wanted to paper sculpt some irises, and when I found Rinea foil paper, I knew I had a medium that would be perfect for this. These irises are very easy to construct. You'll start out cutting some leaf shapes with a die cutter, shape the leaf shapes and then glue them to a wrapped bamboo skewer. Add some spear-shaped leaves and arrange in a foil-wrapped container with some moss and rocks."

Materials List

  • Rinea Foiled Paper in Starstruck Lavender, Glossy Lavender/Gold, Glossy Jade/Gold
  • Paper cheese container or other container
  • Moss and a few rocks, or your choice of filler
  • Bamboo skewer
  • Quick-drying paper glue
  • Leaf die and die cutter
  • Scissors
  • Craft foam

Instructions

  1. Cut three Starstruck Lavender and three Glossy Lavender/Gold leaves using the die and die cutter. Trim stems from leaves.

  2. Cut two spear-shaped leaves from Glossy Jade/Gold. Cut two rectangles from the same paper, 1"x5", and 1"x4".

  3. Cut bamboo skewer in two lengths, 5" and 4". Roll jade rectangles around skewer pieces and glue edge.

  4. Shape petals for the flower: The Starstruck Lavender petals are for the standard (upright) petals of the iris. The Glossy Lavender petals are the fall of the iris. Shape by pinching around the edges of the petal to round the petals using the picture as a guide.

  5. Glue a Glossy Lavender petal point to the tip of the bamboo skewer. Add glue and another petal one third of the way around. Glue the third petal. Glue the Starstruck Lavender petals in the same manner with the petals arranged as shown in the spaces between the fall petals.

  6. Fold a leaf in half and glue to the bottom of the stem. Repeat for the second flower. Bend and shape leaves.

  7. Wrap the sides of your container with gold foil (the reverse side of the Glossy Green) and glue.

  8. Cut a piece of craft foam to fit the container and glue into the container. Paint the top brown if desired.

  9. Poke flowers into the foam and arrange moss and rocks over the foam.

  10. Add more shaping to the flowers and leaves to acheive desired placement.
