Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Crochet Gauge14 sc and 17  rows = 4" [10  cm]; Motif = 7" [18 cm] square.

Finished SizeApprox. 20" [51 cm] deep x 20" [51 cm] long.

Materials List

  • Caron® Cotton Cakes™ (3.5 oz/100 g; 211 yds/193 m) Hollyhock (49018) 4 balls
  • Size U.S. H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Instructions:

Motif (Make 13)

  1. Ch 2.

  2. 1st rnd: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc. 4 sc.

  3. 2nd rnd: Ch  1. 3 sc in each  sc around. Join with sl  st to first  sc. 12 sc

  4. 3rd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. *Ch 3. Skip next sc. 1 sc in each  of next 3  sc. Rep from * twice more. Ch  3. Skip next  sc. 1 sc in last  sc. Join with sl  st to first sc.

  5. 4th rnd: Ch 1. [1 sc in each sc to next corner ch-3  sp. (1  sc. Ch  3. 1 sc) all in corner ch-3 sp] 4 times. 1 sc in each sc to end of rnd. Join with sl st to first sc.

  6. 5th to 16th rnds: Rep 4th rnd 12 more times.

  7. Fasten off.

Straps (Make 2)

  1. Ch 85.

  2. 1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each  ch  to end of chain. Turn. (84 sc).

  3. 2nd to 4th rows: Ch  1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Fasten off.

Assembly

Following granny square bag layout diagrams below, join Motifs tog, matching lettered sides, using rows of sc through back loops.

Bag Edging

  1. With RS facing, join yarn with sl st to to any corner.

  2. 1st rnd: Ch  1. 1 sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each ch-3  sp. Join with sl to to top of first sc. Fasten off.

  3. Sew Straps in position.
