Primary TechniqueCrochet

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Crochet HookJ/10 or 6 mm hook

Materials:

  • Soft Red Worsted Weight Yarn Acrylic or Cotton 10 ply 8 wpi
  • J hook (6.60 mm) Gauge 3 sc = 1 in

 

Abbreviations:

sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: Triple crochet
Sp: space
Beg: Beginning
X: times
Fpdc: Front Post double crochet
Bpdc: Back Post Double Crochet

Dc 2tog : Double crochet two together. A decrease made by making a yarn over hook, pulling up a
loop in the first st. Yarn over hook and pulling through two loops on the hook. Leaving the remaining
loops on hook, yarn over hook and pull up a loop in the next st. Yarn over hook and pull through
2 loops. Then finish as a dc
DB tr: Double Triple crochet. 3 wraps of the yarn over the hook. Work as for a tr with one extra set of
loops

Gauge:

12 inches around by 5 inches deep

 

Instructions:

Lined and unlined version follow rounds 1 to 6. Lined version directions belowCh42 very loosley. Join to form ring. Ch2
R1 Rib Dc in every ch around. Join with a slst in top of beg st. Ch 2 (41 dc + starting ch)
R2 Alternate 1 fpdc, 1 bpdc around. Join. Ch5
R3 Large shells. Shell of (4 tr in the base of the ch5) Sk 6 dc. Dbtr (4 tr in the base of the dbtr)5x. Join with a slst in the first st of round. (6 large shells)
R4 Small Shells Sk first st. Shell of (hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc in next tr) slst in 3rd tr. Shell in 4th tr. Slst in 5th tr. Repeat from * around. Join with a slst in first st. Slst up to the middle tr on the next shell.
R5 Ch1, *sc in the middle tr of the shell. Ch4. Sk to the next shell, sc in the center tr. Ch 2. Sk to the next tr. Repeat from around * Join with a slst in first sc. Slst into the next ch 4 sp.
Unlined version continue. Lined version, end off, cut yarn and follow directions below.
R6 Ch 4. 3 dc in ch 4 loop. (2 dc in ch 2 loop. 4 dc in ch 4 loop) 5x. 2 dc in ch 2 loop. Join with a slst in top of first st. ch 2
R7 and 8 Alternate (Dc, dc 2 tog) around. Join with a slst. Ch2
R9 Dc 2 tog around. Join with a slst. End off, cut yarn leaving a 4 inch tail.Thread a tapestry needle and weave through the remaining stitches of the last round. Knot, and weave in any loose ends.

Lined Hat
R1 Wrong side facing, join yarn with a slst in the top of round 2 of the rib in the next dc after a shell. Ch2, 5 dc. (Sk the next stitch occupied by the large shell of 6 dc) around join with a slst. Ch2 (36 dc)
R2 & 3 Work 2 more rounds of dc. Turn hat to right side and line up the top edges of lining and the hat. Pull working loop through the ch 2 loop on hat side.
R4 Top of hat Ch 2. Working through both layers, dc in ch 2 loop. (4 dc in next loop. 2 dc in ch 2 loop)5x. 4 dc in ch 4 loop. Join
R5&6 Alternate (Dc, dc 2tog) around. Join with a slst. Ch2
R7 Dc 2tog around. Join with a slst. End off, cut yarn leaving a 4 inch tail.Thread a tapestry needle and weave through the remaining stitches of the last round.
Knot, and weave in any loose ends
