March 8, 2011—Northbrook, IL—The cupcake trend started almost a decade ago, when Manhattan’s Magnolia Bakery was featured in an episode of Sex and the City, and America’s taste for cupcakes has been going strong ever since. Even the recent recession couldn’t put a damper on our love for the mini cakes. According to Charles Nelson, the owner of the LA based cupcake chain Sprinkles, “The consumer will decide what stays and what doesn't. I think cupcakes are here to stay because cupcakes are just cake, and Americans love cake.” Not only are cupcakes recession proof, but they also seem to have improved the New York City economy. The Huffington Post asserts that the overall unemployment rate in New York City during the summer of 2010 actually improved, thanks in part to New Yorkers’ collective obsession with purchasing cupcakes.

The trend really took off when Martha Stewart released her own cupcake-themed cookbook, called Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes, which features “175 inspired ideas for everyone’s favorite treat.” Members of the DIY movement agree that Martha’s stamp of approval has elevated the cupcake trend to a true cultural phenomenon. According to Handmade News, “Martha Stewart has a cupcake book out, which means this trend is here to stay! Not only are the cupcakes amazing, but the toppers and paper holders have gone from simple to spectacular!” Naturally, the nation’s love affair with cupcakes has progressed to cupcake accoutrements and accessories, and eventually to cupcake inspired crafts.
