Recently, I decided it was time to clean out my closet. As I began to sort through my clothes, I realized I had way too many sweaters (and jeans and t-shirts and shoes). I ended up putting around 10 gently-worn sweaters into a plastic bin that will inevitable sit in my closet for the next six months. After my winter clean-up, I began to wonder if there was a better option for my sweaters. Even though the clothes no longer fit, they still look good  and feel warm. Luckily, upcycled sweater crafts are a huge trend right now and there are a ton of great ideas for beginners like me.

Old sweaters can dress up a plain bottle of wine or a boring cup of coffee. They can also keep your neck, head or hands warm (no meet to buy expensive accessories at a high-end boutique when you have old sweaters!)

One of my favorite ideas for upcycling an old sweater is creating own leg warmers. Wear they with winter boots or on your way back from the gym – they’re super versatile and so stylish. You might think leg warmers are strictly from “Flashdance”, but this project shows you can translate the look for your everyday life. While you’re at it, add a pop of color to your home with Recycled Sweater Throw Pillows. You can stitch different parts of the sweater together to create a pattern that’s unexpected and completely unique (you won’t find these pillows at your local home furnishings store). Also, the Christmas season is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start decorating! Recycled Sweater Mini Trees allow you to create a variety of decorations using one upcycled sweater. Add embellishments to the sweater’s fabric and place the trees on your mantel for some instant holiday fun.

Take this opportunity to streamline your winter wardrobe, get crafty and save money on fabric. Plus, you’ll have an excuse to go out and buy some new sweaters – what could be better?
