Ask Maria “Rusty Needles!”

I just opened my sewing basket to find most of my needles and pins had rusted. I don’t understand why this happened or how to prevent it from happening again. Help!

Your pins and needles are rusting due to high humidity. If you live in a state like Florida as I do you know humidity is a daily battle. The best way to prevent rusting is to use wool felt strips or a wool based pin cushion. The wool helps prevent rusting and also helps keep pins and needles sharp. You can make your own or purchase one. Keep most of the needle or pin embedded into the pin cushion.  And as a tip, the little strawberry found on most tomato pin cushions is to be used to sharpen your needles. Just jab  the pin or needle several times into the strawberry and you’ll have a sharper one!
