Celtic Green Cross

Materials:

  • Wood Cross shape
  • Green acrylic craft paint
  • Green printed paper
  • Diamond Beadlets
  • Treasure Tape 8x10 sheet
  • Mrs. K's Dimensional Threads #16 Braid: 009, 001C
  • Mrs. K's Dimensional Threads #12 Braid: 088C, 008
  • Mrs. K's Dimensional Threads 1/8" Ribbon: 015 HL, 001C

Instructions:

  1. Paint your cross. (Using a very thin coat of paint will give it a more rustic, weathered look and will allow the wood grain to show through). Allow the cross to dry thoroughly.

  2. Measure your cross. Ours has a raised edge, so we measured the inside space. You can leave a border on yours or measure right to the edge. Using a ruler, draw the cross shape on the back of your paper and cut it out.

  3. Peel the white backer from your Treasure Tape and press your paper cross onto the tape, printed side down. Replace the white liner and cut out your paper cross. With the remaining tape, cover the back of your paper cross in tape strips.

  4. Peel the liner off the strips on the back of your paper cross and press it firmly onto your wooden cross. Make sure any air pockets are smoothed out by pressing with your fingers from the center outward.

  5. Peel the red liner off your paper cross and begin embellishing with your Dimensional Threads. We created a striped border around the outside edges and then made a cross-cross pattern in the center. (For ideas, you can look at simple Celtic knotwork designs or other patterns you like. If you aren’t sure what you want, it may help to sketch some ideas first.)

  6. Once you are finished embellishing, place your cross in a container (a pie plate or casserole dish works well). Pour Diamond Beadlets over your cross. Swirl the beads over your design to cover fully. Tap to remove the excess beads, and your design is ready for display!

Finishing suggestions: You can hang your cross just like a picture, using a sawtooth hanger. You can find these at hardware stores or in the framing department at craft stores.
