Scrap Fabric Birds

Are your scraps taking over? Don't throw them away! Instead, use your fabric to create crafts with scrap material. These Scrap Fabric Birds from Heather Valentine can be used to create magnets, ornaments, lavender sachets and so much more.

Scrap Fabric Birds

Materials:

  • Scraps of fabric
  • Bits of felt
  • Mod Podge
  • Poly fill
  • Button Magnet
  • Glue Gun

Instructions:

  1. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to your pressed scraps to ”stiffen” the fabric and give it more texture.

  2. After everything is dry, cut 1 bird from fun fabric and 1 bird from coordinating felt. Cut 1 wing in fabric of choice. (I used felt).

  3. Stitch wing to body. For my little guys & gals, I used a decorative blanket stitch on my trusty machine and a contrast thread color.

  4. Then, super simple, match your front and back birdies together and straight stitch them together leaving a 1″ opening at the bottom. Stuff with poly fill. Be careful not to over feed your birds they will get fat!! Stitch the opening closed.

  5. With your trusty glue gun in hand, apply a dab of glue at the center and attach your button magnet.

.... made these into cute cat toys .... just add a tsp. of catnip after stuffing ... cats love them ....!!

These would also make such cute plant pokes. After stuffing, stitch almost close, leaving open at the bottom just big enough for a small dowel rod or something similar. Put glue at the end of the small dowel rod, and insert in the small opening and glue the fabric tight around the rod. You can tie a small piece of twine or raffia around the dowel rod at the bottom of the bird. Poke the dowel rod in your favorite potted plant.

Love them made them for xmas, planning to make more,so sweet. Thanks.

I made these as appliques on a t-shirt for my grand daughter, she likes things attached. only need one layer of fabric and put the wing on first, then sew on, stuffing just before you finish it. add a bead for an eye and that's it. any scrap fabric will do. I even put one on the top of her sleeves.

Really Darling!! A person could make these from fabrics for every season! Cute for a little one's necklace on a piece of ribbon. Great for a magnet too. I have to go look thru my scraps now!! Thanks for a fun little project!

I think these little birds are fantastic and would make lovely mobiles for babies and many other things, I love them thank you for sharing x

These are an adorable way to use up left over material. Very Cute! Pinning and sharing!

These are really cute. We are working on things to sale at the Country Store in our quilt show. I've been making pin cushions and have scraps about this size. I may make some for the store. These would also make cute pin cushions.
