Knit Cap Upcycled Pillows



Turn old knit caps or thrift store finds into easy upcycled pillows with this great project from Heidi Borchers of Inspired at Home. These fun pillows embellished with buttons or pins make a great conversation pieces.

Knit Cap Pillows


  • Knit caps
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Needle
  • Thread - quilting type - heavy duty
  • Large button embellishments (or fashion pins)


  1. Tie a large knot on one end of the thread. Thread needle on the other end.
  2. Stitch a running stitch around the entire opening of the knit cap.
  3. Stuff the polyester fiberfill inside the knit cap.
  4. Pull the thread to gather and tighten the opening of the cap. If necessary fill with additional fiberfill before closing opening. Stitch the opening closed with additional stitches until completely closed. Knot off thread.
  5. Attach a large button over the stitched area with needle and thread.

Heidi’s Designer Tip: Don’t overlook any color scheme when selecting your knit caps for upcycling. It’s fun to mix and match.
